- FRUIT-JAR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented'July 13, 1915.
Application filed February 13, 1915. Serial N o. 7,945.
To all whom it may concern 1 Be it known that I, J OHN CONWAY, a citizen of the UnitedStates, (post-.oflice address East Toledo). residing in the county of 00d and State of Ohio,.ha ve invented certain new and useful Improvementsin F ruit- Jars, of which the following is a specification. i y i My invention relates to improvements in fruit jarsand more particularly to an improved cover and cover clamping and securing device for such jar.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a generally improved jar cover clamping and securing device which may be readily attached or applied to thejar or container and when so applied willnot only effectively seal the contents, but on the other hand, maybereadily removed or detached without impairing or damaging any of the parts so that the improved cover attaching or clamping device may be used over andover as desired.
A further .ob ect isthe provision of a cover clamping and securing device of ex-,
ceedingly simple, cheap, and eflicient. con-' struction, which maybe readily and quickly applied to any ordinary fruit jar or con: taiiier having an externally threaded top or necr. 1 A still further object is the provision :of an improved bearing ring for cooperating with thecover clamping yoke, said bearing ring being adapted to be mounted ;upon and to cooperate with an ordinary externally beaded and threaded neck of an ordinary jar or container.
Astill further object. is theprovision of an improved cover clamping, deviceadapted to eliminate friction between the friction bearing surfaces of the ad acent parts in the act of attachment or detachment, of the same thereby more securely sealing the parts in attachment as well, as providing for the more ready removal of the cover from the jar or container. With the above mentioned and other ends in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, j and combination of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in,
some of its embodiments in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims. M
Referring to the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1, is a top plan view of the improved cover and cover clampmg device in its closed or sealed position as applied to a jar or container of ordinary form. Fig. 3, a side elevation, the improved cover and attaching or clamping ring being in section as indicated on'line 3+3 of Fig. 1, the neck of the jar being in side elevation and partly brokenaway for the purpose of illustrating the purpose of the externally beaded part. F 1g. 4, a central sectional view of the lid or cover provided Witha slightly modified form of lid retaining yoke the latter bemgvyprovided with a supplemental lid and yoke clampingdevice. Fig.5, a detail side Fig. a.
Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same.-
Similar numerals of reference designate like parts throughout all the figures of the drawmgs.
The jar or container body 1, in the present lnst ance is provided with an externally beaded and threaded neck 2, said neck 2, in
the present instance, having a circumfeientially extending beading 2 and an inclined or convoluted rib 2 forming the threadedportion, such as frequently employed on an. ordinary jar forthe reception of an ordinary threaded top or cover. As a meansof eliminating frictionin the attachment or detachment of the improved device in connection with an ordinary jar such as described, aswellas adapting the device to such jar for forming a better sealing contact between the parts, an improved attaching and clamping ring 2?), is provided, said ring-3, being formed of suitable metallic material and being provided about its inner periphery with a convoluted rib or thread 3", similar in form'and length to the rib 2 of the bottle neck, and
being adapted to c05perate therewithin attaching or deta chingj the improved ring 3, and as a meansof leveling and supporting the ring 3, with respect to and above the beading 2, the ring 3, is provided about its lower edge with a series of lugs or supports 3*, these supporting lugs 53*, being adapted to cooperate with the heading 2 for holding the ring in proper position when drawn upon the rib 2 of the bottle, or jar 1.
The clamping and attaching ring3, is provided with a pair of externally arranged flanged inclines 3, said flanges or inclines 3, being inclined in the same general direction with the ribs or threads 2", and 3 so that when the lid clamping and retaining yoke, hereinafter described, is drawn up in cooperation with the inclines 3, the ring Will be held in fixed relation to the externally beaded and threaded neck.
The improved lid or cover 4, is provided with a depending rim or flange a adapted to fit within the bottle neck and is provided with a radially extending horizontal flange l, adapted to extend over and cover the upper edges of the threaded neck, said rims or flanges 4, and l forming a convenient seat for a gasket 5, of rubber interposed between the flanged or rim portions 4L, of the lid or cover and the top of the jar, to securely seal the lid when clamped down by the improved lid retaining yoke to be now described.
The improved lid retaining yoke 6, is adapted to span the lid or cover 4:, and is preferably provided at its center with a bearing head 6, the latter being preferably provided with a centering stud 6 adapted to 'be seated within and to cooperate with a similarly shaped recess or depression 4:, in the lid or cover. The yoke 6, terminates at its ends in depending arms 6, adapted to extend below the sides of the lid and terminating in inwardly extending lugs 6, which latter are adapted to extend below or take over and engage with the inclines 3, in the act of securing the lid in position and sealing the same by the circumferential movements of the lid retaining yoke in cooperative relation with the inclines 8.
As a still further means of clamping and sealing the lid or cover, as lightly modified form of yoke as shown in Figs. l and 5, may be provided, in which instance the yoke 6, is provided with a depending pin 6 adapted to carry or form a bearing for the lid and yoke clamping device, consisting, in the present instance, of a rotatably mounted disk shaped member 7, provided with oppositely extending inclines 7, at its top and about its outer periphery and provided also with an outwardly extending operating handle 7". By moving the handle 7", to the left it is obvious that as the inclines 7*, ride under the yoke 6, the latter will be caused to cooperate with the disk shaped member 7 and the subjacent lid or cover l, causing the latter to be pressed, as well as compressed upon the gasket 5, with great force, thereby securely sealing the lid or cover upon the jar or container in an obvious manner.
By reason of the above construction, it will be obvious that friction is eliminated from the adjacent cooperating parts and that the parts may not only be securely sealed in the act of drawing up, but that the parts may be readily removed in the act of opening or unsealing the ar cap and that an exceedingly sanitary jar cover and attaching and clamping device is provided.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily Lmderstood.
Having thus described some of the embodiments of my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,

In a fruit jar, the combination with a jar provided with an externally beaded neck having a convoluted rib above said beading; of an attaching ring having a similarly shaped internally arranged convoluted rib cooperating with said first mentioned rib, said ring having depending supports resting on said beading and provided with oppositely arranged inclines extending in the general direction of said convoluted ribs.
2. In a fruit jar, a jar provided with an externally beaded neck, said neck being provided with a convoluted rib arranged above the plane of said beading, and an attaching ring resting on said beading and provided about its inner and outer peripheries with ribbed inclines extending in the general direct-ion of said convoluted rib and adapted to cooperate therewith.
3. A fruit jar, comprising a jar body provided with a circumferentially beaded neck having a convoluted rib, a ring provided about its inner periphery with a similarly shaped convoluted rib cooperating with said rib of said neck and having depending sup ports resting on said beading said ring being provided with diametrically opposite externally arranged inclines extending in the general direction of said convoluted ribs, a lid mounted on said neck and having a depending rim or flange taking within said neck, and a lid retaining yoke having inwardly extending lugs engaging with said inclines.
4;. A fruit jar, comprising a jar provided with an externally beaded neck having a convoluted rib, a ring threaded thereon and resting above said beading, said ring being provided with externally arranged flanges inclined in the general direction of said convoluted rib, a lid mounted on said neck, a lid retaining yoke having inwardly extending lugs normally engaging with said flanges, and a disk shaped member provided with oppositely extending inclines interposed between said yoke and lid, said disk shaped member being rotatably mounted and provided with a radially extending handle.
5. A fruit jar, comprising a jar provided with a circumferentially arranged beading, and having a neck portion provided with a convoluted rib arranged above said beading a clamping and attaching ring provided about its inner periphery with a similarly shaped convoluted rib cooperating with said convoluted rib of said neck and said circumferentially arranged inclines, a lid or In testimony whereof I have affixed my cover mounted on said bottle neck above signature in presence of two Witnesses. said rin and a lid retaining yoke extending acro s s said lid or cover and provided JOHN CONWAY With depending arms terminating in in- Witnesses: wardly extending lugs in engagement with D.
