This invention relates to devices of the character designed to removably hold a sheet or sheets of paper so that the uppermost sheet can be written on through an opening in the device.

Another object is to make provision for so mounting'the sheet of paper to be written on that the surface'thereof will be smooth for writing on.

Another object is to provide means for frictionally holding the sheet of paper against slipping.

The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention.

Figure l is a perspective view of a hotel register made in accordance with this invention and lying in position for use on a desk, a fragment of which is shown. Fig. Q is a plan view of the register in Fig. l in open position. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary plan view of the register showing the register sheet turned to expose to view the face thereof that is turned down in Fig. 2. Fig. -l is an enlarged cross section on line indicated by .r4-.114, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a cross section corresponding to Fig. l excepting that the parts are in closed position.

rlhere is provided a folding cover comprising a front l having an opening 2 so as to form a frame, said cover also comprising a back 3 hinged at et to the frame. The frame l is recessed on its inner face around the margin of the opening 2 as indicated at 5 to accommodate the marginal portion of a backing 6 that projects from the backing 3 and that is fastened thereto by gluing it or otherwise. The backing 6 is formed of some material having relatively great friction value as, for instance, leather, plush and the like.

In the drawings is shown a backing of leather having its upper surface roughened somewhat so as to form a nap which is not -and useful Hotel-Register, of which fthe folf long enough .to indicate-.on the drawings. Be it krown that I, CHARLES R.v HADLEY,

Thebacking thus made is of advantage as it prevents slipping of the sheet of paper 7, affords a firm even surface for the'paper so that writing thereon will .be facilitated, and also affords a slight degree ofv resiliency Vwhich I find of advantage in writing.

It is noted that the sheet 7 is firmly held between the backing Gand flange 7 and that said sheet is but slightly below-the level of the upper face of the frame l, so -that it may be written on as readily as though it were lying loosely upon a` desk or the like.

The bottom of the .recess 5 forms a relatively thin flange 7 and-the backing 6 is of slightly .greater width than the sheet 7 so that the perforations 8 in said sheet may be covered by said flange, when the frame is closed, whether said perforations are on theV right hand side as in Fig. 2, or on the left hand side as in Fig. 3. The sheet 7 as shown may be a register sheet for the registration of hotel guests or for an analogous purpose and the perforations 8 are used vfor binding said sheet in a loose leaf binder, not shown.

Then in closed position the frame 1 and back 3 may be held against opening by a suitable clasp formed, in the instance shown in the drawings, of a button 9 mounted on the frame l and a strap l0 having a socket ll adapted to snap over the button 9, said strap being fastened tothe back 3. The button 9, strap l0 and socket 11 form a snap fastener of a type well known in the art dealing with such devices.

In practice the register will be provided with a register sheet 7 as shown in Fig. 3 and the frame 1 will be closed so as to hold said sheet securely by reason of the contact of the sheet 7 with the backing G and the face a of the sheet will be exposed to view through the opening 2 so that guests of the hotel in which, the device is placed may register in the usual way. When the face ct of the register sheet has been filled with the guests names, the device will be opened and the sheet will be turned overso as to expose to view its other face b as in Fig. 2 and the device will then be closed as before.

Then the writing spaceon the sheet 7 has all been used, the device will be opened and the sheet 7 removed therefrom and placed in a suitable binder, not shown, and another sheet like that removed will be substituted in the device and the frame l Will be closed down onto the back 3 as before.

The foregoing Will enable those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains to make and use said invention.V

.I claim:

l. A hotel register comprising a back, a

backing projecting from said back, and an backing when the register is closed, said recess being of no greater depth than the thickness of the backing.

3. A hotel register comprising a back, an open frame mounted to open from said back, and a backing having a nap surface of relatively great frictional value between the frame and the back to hold a sheet of paper exposed to view through the frame.

4. A hotel register comprising a back7 an open frame mounted to open from said back, and a backing of leather fastened to the back,l said leather having a roughened upper surface substantially as and for the purpose described.

5. A hotel .register comprising a back, a front hinged to said back and provided with an opening and With a recessffin its inner face around the margin of said opening, said recess being Wider at the side margins than at the end margins, a backing fastened to and projecting from said back and having its marginal portion fitting in said recess, and means to hold the front and back closed together.
