Description

A. PORTER. Improvement in Desk' and Chair Combined.
W i l/ J} No. 120,455. Patented Oct- 31, 1871.
Witmm:
UNITEn STATES PATENT QFFICE.
AROHIBALD A. PORTER,
OF GRIFFIN, GEORGIA.
IMPROVEMENT lN DESKS AND CHAIRS COMBINED.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, AROI-IIBALD A. PORTER, of Griflln, in the county of Spaldin g and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful I1n. provement in School-Desk or Office-Chair; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved desk or chair, part being broken away to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a top View of the same, the desk-board being turned back and sectioned to show the construction.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved school-desk or oftice-chair, provided with a desk or writing-board, which shall be so constructed that the said desk or writing-board may be conveniently turned back out of the way 5 and it consists in the construction and combination of the various parts of the desk as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the chair or seat, which may be an ordinary office-chair, or a chair made expressly for the purpose. B is a ring or socket, from which project two arms, 0 1),parallel or nearlyparallel with each other. The arm 0 is made shorter, and its inner end is secured to the forward end of the right-hand arm of the chair A. The other arm or rod D is made longer, and extends back along the right-hand arm of the chair, and its rear end is attached to abracket attached to the said arm near the back of the chair. Upon the longer arm D is placed a socket or sleeve, E, upon the side of which is formed a projection, by means of which it is swiveled to the under side of the right-h and end of the desk or writing-board F, so as to hinge and swivel the said board. to the said arm or rod. To the inner corner of the left-hand end of the desk or writing-board F is attached a notched pin or catch, G, which passes through aholein asmall plate, H, attached to the forward end of the left-hand arm of the chair A, where itis secured in place bya spring-catch, I. If desired, the outer corner of the left-hand end of the board F may be supported by abrace attached to the frame of a chair; but this will only be necessary in the larger chairs. By this construction the desk or writing-board F, when not required for use, may be turned up into a vertical position, turned down, either forward or back upon its swivel, and slide back at the side of the chair out of the way. The ring or socket B is designed to receive an ink-well, J, which is sunk into said ring or socket C so as not to interfere with the deskboard F when arranged for use. The pen is inserted in the ink-well J through a conical or cupshaped hole in the desk F, which hole is lined with a similarlyshaped metal plate, K, to receive any ink that may drop from the pen and conduct it back into the well J. L is a small trough pivoted at one end to the under side of the forward part of the desk F, to receive pens and pencils. In the under part of the chair A is placed a drawer, M, which may be drawn out at either side of the chair, and which is designed to receive slates, books, papers, 850.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The arms 0 D, swiveled socket E, and spring-catch G H I or equivalent catch, with the chair A and desk F, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the ring or socket B, so constructed as to receive an ink-well, J, with the arms 0 D, and perforated desk or writingboard F, substantially as herein shown and de-- scribed, and for the purpose set forth.
ARCHIBALD A. PORTER.
