CHAIR.
No. 346,313. Patented July 27, 1886.
UNITED STATES PATENT Unmet,
JOSEPH GEE PLOVMAN, OF \VHITE PIGEON, MICHIGAN.
C H A l R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 346,313, dated July 2'7, 1886,
Application filed February 17, 1886. Serial No, 192,240. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JosErH GEE PLOWMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vhite Pigeon, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in School Seats and Desks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is a perspective view. Figs. 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 are detail views. Fig. 7 is a view of a modification of the desk removed from the scat-frame.
My invention relates to school seats and desks; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the-claims.
The object of the invention is to provide a school seat and desk which may be raised and lowered to accommodate the height of the pupil or person using it, and so constructed as to abolish the school-room nuisance of one pupil joggling anothers desk.
I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters and figures of reference designate similar parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
B designates an ordinary chair-seat attached to and supported by the elevating-screw 0, having a bearing in the nut 01' threaded sleeve, U, which is securely fastened to the floor, said screw being supported laterally by means of the legs or supports f f f, which are also fastened to the floor and provided with the aperture g, for the reception of said screw, and having teeth or serrations e, radiating from said aperture on its upper side for engaging the teeth or serrations c, 011 the lower end of the locking-collar D, which is located on the upper or smooth part c of the screw, said collar D, being adjustable and connected thereto by a set-screw, c. The chairseat B is pro vided with a flanged collar, t, which is secure] y fastened to said seat for the reception of the rod 0, which sustains the desk 11, and slides vertically and rotates in said collar '1. The rod 0 is provided with the adjustable collar 3/, having the projections h, for engagement in the depression in the top of the collar t, thereby permitting a limited lateral motion to the desk a. The collar y is provided with the set-screw z, for securing it to the rod 0, in any required position. Said seat is also provided with the pocket or book receptacle 1-, which may be securely fastened thereto.
In operation, it will be seen from the drawings that, if the locking-collar be loosened, the Seat may be rotated in either direction until the required height is attained. Then by means of the set-screw c said collar may be securely fastened, thereby locking the device and preventing either vertical or lateral movement. Further, the desk may be adjusted vertically by means of the collar y and set-screw The desk is securely attached to the top of the rod 0, by means of a bracket, The elevating-screw has a bearing in a nut, 11, fastened to the floor.
This device possesses several special advantages over others of its class, which may be briefly stated as follows: First, the seat can be adj nsted to accommodate the height of the pupil, thereby permitting his feet to rest upon the floor, and so preventing deformity of the legs; second, the adj ustability of the desk aeeommodates the length of the pupil, thereby preventing round shoulders; third, the seats can be reversed or turned so as to face any position; fourth, the book pocket is at the right hand, where it is convenient for the pupil and easily seen by the teacher; fifth, a box is provided for pen, pencils, and ink upon the desk at a point where it is most convenient, and still occupies that part of the desk which is not used for other purposes.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. In combination with the school-seat, the elevatingscrew attached thereto, and having a bearing in the nut, 11, fastened to the floor, the legs f f f, adapted to support said screw laterally, and the collar D, having serra- In testimony whereof I affix my signature :0 tions to engage and lock with the serrations in presence of two witnesses. of the legs, substantially as specified.
