To all fic/wm it may concer/n Be it known that I, HARRY RATYGIA, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Novelty Devices, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to novelty devices and particularly to devices of this class designed for use in braiding belts and similar articles, and more particularly in making what is known as knotted braid-work, and with this and other obj ects in view the invention consists in a device of the class specified, constructed as hereinafter described and claimed, and the object of which is to hold the cords from which the braidwork is made in the operation of making such work.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which z Figure l is a sectional side view of my improvement and showing the same connected with a table; Fig. 2 a plan view but showing the first step in the process of knotting or braiding a belt; Fig. 3 a. view similar to Fig. l but showing the next step in the use of the device; and, Fig. 4L a view similar to Figs. 2 and 3 and showing the third step in the use of the device. f

In the drawing forming part of this specification, I have shown at a a table or other support and, in the practice of my invention, I provide a braid-work holder b comprising a head plate b2 provided with a backwardly directed supplemental plate b3A and having a downwardly directed member b4 to which is pivoted at b5 an arm 0 composed of an inner part o2 and an outer part c3 hinged to the part c2 at c4, and the outer part 03 is provided with an upwardly directed extension 05, the top of which is provided with a spring clamp device o, and the arm member c where it is connected with the part b4 is provided with an upwardly directed eXtension, and the said part ZY* and said extension are provided with registering apertures be through which may be passed a pin to hold the arm in a rigid position, and the part c2 of the arm o is provided with a spring device d secured thereto at Z2 and bent to form a projection cl3 which fits between the abutting ends of the parts c2 and c3 of the arms c and is adapted to hold the arm member c3 in operative position as shown in Fig. l, and said spring is also provided with a thumb and inger or handle pierced@L by which it may be manipulated. The bottom or" the part b4 is provided with a backwardly directed arm 117 through which is passed a screw bs provided at its lower end with a handle b9 and at its upper end with a clamp plate 61, and this construction forms a clam p mechanism by which the device may be secured to the edge portion of the table or other support as shown in Fig. 1. The head plate b2 is providedadjacent to its front edge with a longitudinal slot e which opens at one end as shown at e2 and which forms a front finger e3, and said head plate is also provided back of the slot e with upwardly directedk hook pins f, two of which are shown. v

The device herein described and claimed is intended for the purpose of holding the cords g from which the braid-work or the knotted braid-work is to be formed,land in making knotted braid-work the cords are divided into separate series g2, g3, gt and g as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and each series con-r tains four cords, and the said separate series of cords are passed into the slot c as shown in Fig. 2.

After the separate series of cords have been passed into the slot e the ends of said series below the head plate b2v are knotted together as shown at g6 in Fig. 1 to prevent said cords from pulling upwardly through said slot and the cords of the separate series above the head plate b2 are knotted together as shown at g7,in the following manner. The two central cords g8 of a series are raised and slipped under the spring clamp 06 as shown in Fig. l in order to keep them taut and facilitate the knotting operation after which the two outer cords are knotted over or around the two central cords, and in this operation the outer cord g is rst passed over the central cords gs and the other outer cord glo is passed downwardly through a loop formed by lthe outer cord L(/9 andV then under the central cords and up over the outer cord gf. This completes one-half of the knot shown at g7 in Fig. 2, after which the outer cord g1 is passed over the central cords and the outer cord g9 is passed downwardly through a loop formed by the outerl cord glo under the central cords and up over the cord glo, and'this operation will complete the second half of the knot shown at Q7, or completes the knot.

Each of the series g2, g3, g4 and g5 are tied in a similar manner, after which the separate series are knotted together by bringing the outer cord 99 of one series and the outer eordg10 of another series together to form two central cords gu, as shown in Fig. 3, and the next adjacent cord on either side of the cords g11 are knotted over or around the cords g in the same manner as the outer cords g and glo are knotted over the central cords in the separate series as shown in'Fig. 2, and this willproduce the result shown in Fig. 3.

It will be seen on considering Fig. 3 that the separate series g2, g3, g4 and g5 as shown in Fig. 2 are knotted or tied together by three knots g12 formed in the manner hereinbefore set out, and it will be understood that on the completion of the next knotting step which will be practically the same as the first step shown in Fig. 2 there will again Vbe four knots gl as shown in Fig. 1. After a few knots of the beltV have been braided, the cords or the braidework is detached from the finger e3 and the said braidwork is passed back over the head plate b2 as shown in Fig. el, and connected with the hook pinsy f which are passed upwardly therethrough, and this operation may be repeated as the work of braidingor knotting proceeds so as to keep the braiding operation close to the head plateY b2. The ends of the cords under the braid-work holder where they are knotted together at gG may be of any desired length as may also the ends of said cords above the braid-work holder, and after a predetermined amount or length of the belt has been knotted or braided, it may be turned around on the braid-work holder and the end portions of the cord undervtheb'raid-work holder may be knotted or braided to continue the length of the belt. The braid-work holder b, with the form of construction shown, m-ay be compactly folded together and carried in a pocket or handbag and easily shipped through the mail, if desired, but my inven- Vtionis not limited. to the particular details of construction of said braid-work holder., herein shown` and described, and various changes therein and modifications thereof may be made, within thescope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of'my invention or sacrificing its advantages.

Although, I have shown and described the methodk of braiding or knotting a belt in this application and although said method is of my invention, the said method is not claimed herein, the claims in this case being limited to the work-piece or braid-work holder.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A braid-work holder, comprising a head plate Yadapted to be secured to a support, said head plate being provided in its front edge portion with a longitudinal slot which opens outwardly at one end and backwardly of said slot, withupivardly extending hook members.

2. A- braid-work holder, comprising a head portion adapted to be secured to a support and having a forwardly directed arm provided with anattaching member, said' head portion being provided with a longitudinal slot which opens at one end and backwardly thereof with means for adjustably connecting a braid-work piece there with.

3. A braid-work holder comprising a head piece provided with means for securing it to a support, said head piece being provided at the front thereof with a transverse finger and rearwardly of said finger with upwardly directed attaching members.

A braid-work holder comprising a head portion adapted to be secured to a support and provided at its front with a transverse finger and rearwardly of said finger with upwardly directed attaching members, said head portion being also provided with'a forwardly directed arm provided at its end with an upwardly directed member having an attaching device at the top thereof.

A braid-work holder comprising a head portion adapted to be secured to a support and provided at its front with a transverse finger` and rearwardly of said finger with upwardly directed attaching members, said head portion being-also provided with a forwardly directed arm provided at its end with an upwardly directed member having an attaching device at the top thereof, and sai'darm being composed of separate hinged parts.
