To all whom it may concern Be it knownthat I, Josnrr-r VANIEK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Lyra, in the county of Palo Pinto and Stateof Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cradles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in cradles and like receptacles for infants and has as its principal object the provision of a device in which the infant may be placed and safely secured against the intrusion of insects, etc., and further sheltered from the effects of sun rays or inclement Weather.

A further object is to, provide a structure havingthe usual rockers, a depository for bed material, and a locking device whereby" the infant may be confined within the structure and prevented from inadvertently falling out.

These and other objects, such as neatness of appearance, adaptability, safety and low cost of construction, are obtainedby the novel construction and combination of parts hereafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cradle, made in accordance with the invention, shown in a closed position. Fig. 2 is a similar perspective view of the same, but shown in an open position. Fig. 3 is another perspective View, showing a curtain or hood extended over the screen. Fig. 4 is an enlarged transverse sectional view taken substantially on the center line of the cradle, looking toward one end thereof, and' Fig. 5 is a fragmental detail view of the hood securing means;

The structure is comprised of a pair of vertical end members 10, their lower ends terminating in rockers 11, of the usual form and of such length as to prevent an extreme movement whereby the infant might fall out. The upright sides 10 are connected by longitudinal slats or bars 12 and 13 while directly above the rocker elements are similar slats 14 between which is the flooring 15 of the cradle. These side elements are cut transversely across as at 16 and provided at their upper edges with longitudinal slats 17; connected by hinges 18 to therear slat are the upper end sections 19 of the cover which is also provided with slats 20 at its sides and 21 at its top,the coverbeing substantially semi-circular in cross section, its ends being joined to the lower end elements 10 along the edge 16 which is beveled at both ends thereof, as at 22 as a preventive of lateral action.

Atthe center of the structure, extending between the slats 13 and 17 are segmental stiffening bands 24, while in thecover, between the slats 20 and 21 are otherreinforcing bands 25.

Openings 27 and 28 are formed respec-' tively in the cradle ends, the same being covered at their interior by screens or nettings 29 and 30 in their respective section. Also upon the exterior of the cradle, extending from end to end above the floor are other screens 31, similar screens 32 being secured to the curved edge of the end supports and band element 24 upon the stationary sides of the cradle, while the hinged cover is covered in a similar manner by screens 33. Thus when the infant is placed within and the cover closed, insects, such as flies, mosquitos, and bugs, worms, snakes, birds, small animals and thelike, cannot enter. This cover is held in position when closed by means of the fixed catch 35, secured to the front bar 17 and engageable with it is a snap hook 86, slidable in the slat 20 and held operatively outward by the coiled push spring 36, except when the extending plunger 87 be pushed inward.

The handle 38 is provided at the center of the cover by which it may be turned upward upon thehinges 18.

As a preventive against the direct rays'of the sun or of sudden showers, curtains 40 are provided at the ends, which can be drawn down over the openings 27 and 28 on the exterior of the side elements, the same being held upon suitable hangers in the manner of an ordinary window curtain. Another curtain 42, extending the entire length of the cradle is secured to the rear cross slat 13 and can be drawn upward and forward so as to cover the entire structure extending between the bars 12 and 18 or it may be engaged at different points with the fixed studs 43 as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, a handle 44 being provided forconvenience.

When the cover of the cradle is raised, it may be held in position by means of the bar 46, pivoted at 47 to the stationary part of the end frame, and having a link 48 pivoted midway to the bar as at 49, its lower end being engaged with the upper end. portion 1. In a cradle, the combination with a pair of upright end plates, bars connecting between said plates, and rockers at the bottoms thereof, of a cover frame hinged to one of said connecting bars, means for maintaining said cover when in a raised position, means for holding said cover when closed, an open mesh screen disposed over said cover between said end'plates, a curtain adjustably Copies of this patent may be obtained for disposable over said screen, and means for holding said curtain in adjustment.

2. In a cradle, the combination with the frame and rockers thereof, said frame having openings in its ends and at the front and back, of nettings permanently disposed over all of the mentioned openings, a skeleton cover hinged lengthwise, of said frame, said cover having a netting over its entire area, curtains at the end openings of said frame, a curtain adapted to be disposed over said side frame openings and said cover, means for holding said cover closed and means for holding said cover open.
