SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 424,351, dated March 25, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, MENDEL PIANKO, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful I1nproveinents in lVindow-Stands, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain improvements on the window-stands for which Letters Patent were granted to Kazilnieras Bukawietis, No. 399,491, dated March 12,1889, said improvements being designed with a view to increase the safety of the window-stand in cleaning the window, and permitting the convenient folding up of the stand when not in use.

The invention consists of a window-stand which is forined of bars that are supported on the sill and connected by a transverse retaining-bar, and keys passing through the main bars, the outer ends of the inain bars being united by transverse seatfor1ning slats which are held by pins of the inain bars and provided with a folding railing forined of a top bar and folding straps pivoted tothe transverse slats and the top bar and to each other, so as to permit their being folded up and detached from the main supporting-bars. The main bars are supported by inclined braces, which are provided with a detachable step at the lower part and with rests at the lower end ,s of said braces. A foot-board is connected with the seat-slats by an apron which is connected with the front seat-slat and the rear edge of the foot-board, and which serves to hide the feet of the person cleaning the window.` i

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents the vertical transverse section of iny improved window-stand on line 2 2, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a top view of the saine; and Fig. 3 is a side view of the railing, foot-board, and apron connecting the seat-slats with the footboard, all the parts being' shown detached from the supporting-frame of the stand and folded up.

Referring to the drawings, Arepresents the main supporti n lg-bars, which arc supported on the sill and extended to the outside of the window, parallel to each other. The inner ends of the main bars A are connected by a transverse retaining-bar A', which is held in position against the wall of the building by means of pins or keys a, which are passed through openings a in the inner ends of the bars A, as shown clearly in Figs. l and 2. The outer ends of the supporting main bars Aareprovided with fixed pins b, to which are applied transverse slats B to form a seat for the person cleaning the window. To the outer ends of the main bars Aare applied,by a suitable hinge-connection, inclined braces D, which are connected by means of links D with the bars A, which links pass through eyes d of the braces and engage attheir upper ends notches d in the upper edges of the main bars A. The lower ends -of the hinged braces D are provided with pins e, which pass through holes of atransverse footboard E, so as to hold the same in position. The lower ends of the inclined braces D are provided with rests D2, which abut against the wall of the building and prevent the injuring or scratching of the same.

To the ends of the seatslats B, as well as to the outer edge of the outermost slat B, are applied pivoted and folding straps f, each of which is made of two sections which are pivoted `together, the upper ends being again pivoted to a lJ-shaped frame F, so as to forni a railing when the two sections of the strips are placed in line with each other. The rail--u ing F may be folded down upon the slats by means of pivoted straps f, and removed with the seat-slats from the snpportinglfrarne, as shown in Fig. 3, when the window-stand is not required for use. The seat-*slats are connected with each other by straps or braces M. The front slat B is connected with the rear edge of the foot-boardE by an apron G, whichv person sitting on the window-stand, by providing supports for the arms.

Havin g thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a window-stand, the combination of supporting main bars applied to the sill by a transverse retaining-bar, keys or pins passing` through said main bars, inclin cdbraceshinged to said supporting-bars and h( ving rest-blocks at their lower ends and links for connecting the braces with the main bars7 detachable seat-slats supported on pins of the main bars, a railing formed of a top frame, and folding slats pivoted to the top frame and to the seatslats, substantially as set forth.

2. In a window-stand, the combination, with main bars to be supported on a window-sill, of a transverse retaining-bar through which said main bars are passed, keys for locking the main bars to the ietainingbar, inclined braces hinged to the outer ends of the main bars and provided with rest-blocks at the lower end, links connecting the hinged braces with the main bars, seat-slats supported on pins of the main bars, adetachable foot-board appliedtopins of the lower parts of the braces, and an apron connecting thc front slat with the rear edge of the foot-board, substantially as set forth.

3. In a window-stand, the combination of main bars to be supported on a window-sill, a transverse retaining-bar through Which the main bars are passed7 keys for locking the main bars to said retaining -baig inclined braces hinged to the outer ends of the main bars and provided with rest-blocks at their lower ends, detachable seat-slats applied to pins of the main bars, a folding railing attached to said seat-slats, afoot-board attached to pins at the lowerpart of the braces, and an apron connecting the front with the rear edge of the foot-board, substantially as set-forth.

4. In a windowstand, the combination of detachable seat-slats, a folding railing formed of folding slats pivoted to said seat-slats, of a top frame to which the slats are pivoted, a detachable foot-board, and an apron connect ing the 'front slat with the foot-board, substantially as set forth.
