Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 17, 1916.
Application filed January 12, 1916. Serial No. 71,711.
To all "whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT R. ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hyde Park, Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Cuspidors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in sanitary cuspidors, and one of its objects is the provision of a device of this character, which shall be simple, du-
rable and efficient and which may be man'- ufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a frame or rack to support a covered cuspidor at convenient places and which is not liable to be upset and have the contents spilled upon the floor of a building.
A further object of this invention is the provision of novel operating means mounted in the frame or rack for raising the cover of the cuspidor by the foot of the user before the cuspidor can be used, which will prevent person-s from standing at a great distance from using the cuspidor, which causes unsanitary devices.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the descrip tion proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a perspective view of a sanitary cuspidor, constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the device and illustrating in dotted lines the cover in an open position, Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional view, illustrating the connecting rod operated by an operating lever to move the cover'to an open position, Fig. 4 is a detail view showing the means of connecting the cover to the connecting rod, and Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
Referring in detail to the drawing, 1- in- 55 dicates a base of substantially circular formation, having a substantially U-shaped extension 2 formed thereon and provided with an opening 3 in the outer end thereof, secured to the base 1 and opposite to the eX- tension 2 is a housing 1, provided with an opening 5 in the upper end thereof. The base 1 is provided with an angular flange 6 to receive a cuspidor 7, having hinged thereto, a cover 8. The cover 8 is provided with a laterally extending ear ,9, having an opening 10 therein, to be received within the housing 4 through the opening 5 and to be attached to a cover operating means, for raising the cover 8 to an open position, which will be hereinafter more fully described.
, A portion of the extension 2 is provided with enlargements lO to receive a pin 12 for pivotally supporting within the extension 2 a foot operating lever 13, which is provided with its end 1 1 bent at right angles and extended through the opening 3 to be secured to a foot pedal 15. Secured within thelower end of the housing 4 is a bracket 16 which has pivoted thereto, a bellcrank lever 17. The bell-crank lever 17 engages the upper face of the lever 13 as illustrated at 18 and has secured thereto, a coil spring 19, which is secured to the base 1 to hold the foot pedal in an operative position. Pivotally secured to the end of the bell-crank lever 17 is a connecting rod 20, which is provided with its free end bent at rightangles as illustrated at 21, to be received within the opening in the ear 9, to provide a connection between the cover 8 and the bell-crank lever 17, to move said cover according to the movement of the bellcrank lever 17. Secured to the connecting rod 20 is a sleeve 22, which has secured thereto a leaf spring 23, for an engagement with the end 21 of the connectingrod 20, to prevent the end 21 of the rod 20 from accidentally disengaging or slipping from an engagement with the ear 9. The cover 8 is of hollow formation to provide a reservoir for receiving the disinfectant fluid through the spout 24, which has 'secure'd'thereto, a cap 25, providing means for fillingthe reser voir when desired. Secured to the bottom of the cover 8 is a valve 26 of any desired type, for regulating the flow of disinfectant Within the cuspidor 7.
In operation, when a person desires to I use the cuspidor, pressure is made upon the foot pedal 15 by the operators foot and the lever 13 is caused to move upon itself, raising one arm of the bell-crank lever 17 upwardly and the other arm downwardly, causing a pull on the connecting rod 20 which brings the cover 8 to an open position against the tension of the coil spring 19. The cover 8 will return to a closed position by the tension of the spring 19, when the operator raises his foot from the foot pedal 15, providing a sanitary cuspidor, which will prevent flies andother insects from entering and carrying with them various germs which accumulate in cuspidors. When it is desired to remove the cuspidor 7 from the base 1, the connecting rod 20 is disengaged from the ear 9, by a suitable tool or instrument by inserting it within the opening 5 of the housing 4 and causing the rod 20 to move laterally, the end 21 will dis engage the ear 9 and the cuspidor 7 may be then removed for washing and cleansing purposes.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it
will be imderstood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is A sanitary cuspidor comprising a substantially semi-circular base, an angular flange formed on the base to receive a coveredreceptacle, a vertically extending housing formed on the base and engaging the side walls of the receptacle, a substantially U-shaped extension formed on the base and disposed oppositely to the housing, a foot for normally holding the first mentioned end of the bell crank lever in contact with the foot operating lever and to normally hold the cover of the receptacle in a closed position.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
