To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NATHAN Hinsoii, a citizen of the United States, residing at l'lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of South Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cuspidors, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to cuspidors, and has for an object to provide a cuspidor of a simple and durable construction and which will be clean and sanitary.

The invention embodies, among other :leatures, the provision of a ouspidor, normally closed by a suitable lid adapted to be actuated by the operator for uncovering the receptacle of the cuspidor.

In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this speci lication in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device, showing the lid in closed position; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view showing the lid in raised position.

Referring more particularly to the views, I disclose a base and which is in the nature of a floor, the said base being adapt ed to support a receptacle 11 preferably having a flared top 12 forming an opening 13 to the receptacle. The opening 13 of the receptacle 11 is normally closed by a lid 1-lhaving a rubber or other cushion member 15 of a ring-like or circular nature arranged within the lid and adapted to engage the edge of the top 12 so that when the lid is moved into closing position on the receptacle 11 the member 15, acting as a cushion, will permit of returning the lid to closed position silently and without any perceptib le noise.

A vertical stem 16 projects upwardly from the central portion of the lid 1 1 and has connection with a sleeve 17 adapted to slide horizontally on a bar 18, a screw 19 having threaded connection with the sleeve 17 being adapted to be screwed downwardly thereon to engage the bar 18 in order to rigidly lock the sleeve against horizontal movement on the bar. The inner end of the bar 18 is provided with a depending rod 20 slidable vertically in a socket 21, a thumb screw 22 having threaded connection with the socket and adapted to engage the rod 20 to limit its vertical movement relatively to the stem. It will now be apparent that by unscrewing the screw 19 relatively to the bar 18, the lid can be adjusted horizontally on the bar and, similarly, by loosening the screw 22 relatively to the rod 20, the lid can be adjusted ver-- tically, thus providing a horizontal and vertical adjustment of the lid with respect to the receptacle 11. i

A casing 23 is rigidly secured to the base .10 a distance from the receptacle 11 and mounted to swing within the casing is a member 2 1 having connection with the socket 21, the inner end of the member having pivotal connection with a rod 25, the lower end of which terminates in a hook 26 and has connection with the inner end of toot lever 27 extending exterior-1y of the casing 23, the medial portion of the rod being preferably looped and having connected thereto the lower end of a contractile spring 28 having its upper end secured within the casing 23. The foot lever 27 is preferably covered with a rubber fabric 29 or the like to prevent the foot of the open ator from slipping when the foot lever is operated.

Now assuming that the lid is in closed position as shown in Fig. 1, when it is desired to move the lid into open position and uncover the receptacle 11, pressure is exerted on the foot lever 27, thus moving the same against the action of the contractile spring 28 and thereby imparting a downward pull on the inner end of the member 2 1, thus resulting in a vertical swinging movement of the lid 14; and resulting in uncovering the receptacle 11. At the moment the pressure of the foot on the foot lever 27 is released, the action of the contractile spring 28, now in tension, will cause the lid 14L to be returned to closed position on the receptacle 11, and, as mentioned heretofore, the member 15, constituting a cushion, causes the lid to silently return to closed position upon releasing the pressure upon the foot lever 27.

From the foregoing description it will be apparent that my device is of a simple and durable construction. can be easily operated and will present a clean, neat and sanitary appearance. It will be also noted that by having the lid 1 1 ar'anged on the bar 18 as mentioned heretofore, the lid can be adjusted horizontally with respect to the receptacle 11 and by having the bar 18 arranged as mentioned with respect to the socket 21, the lid will be capable of a vertical adjustment as well as a horizontal adjustment relative to the mentioned receptacle.

It will be understood that I do not limit myself to the particular construction dis closed herein; that various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the inventionand that the scope of the invention is defined in the appended claim.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

In a cuspidor, the combination with a receptacle, of a lid therefor, a casing, a member mounted to swing in the casing and projecting exteriorly thereof, a socket carried by the member, a bar adjustable vertically on the said socket, a sleeve adjustable horizontally on the bar and having connection with the lid, a foot lever projecting exteriorly of the casing, a rod having pivotal connection with the foot lever and with the said member for imparting a swinging movement to the bar to raise the lid from the receptacle when the foot lever is actuated, and a spring carried by the casing and having connection with the rod for moving the same when pressure is released on the foot lever, to return the lid to closed position on the receptacle.
