Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, IoA M. Josnrn, a citizen of the United States of America, re siding at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Diaper- Govers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a diaper cover or protector for infants and has for its chief objects the proper ventilation and ad ustability of the same.

A further object of my invention is to provide a garment which is easily attached 5 to and removed from the body and is easily washed.

In diaper covers as hitherto proposed, it has been customary to make them out of a single piece of waterproof material and constructed and adapted to be used in such a way as to completely inclo'se that portion of the infants body to which they were applied. Such diaper covers have been seriously objected to by physicians and others because they made the infant too hot, as

little air could penetrate the waterproof material to the parts covered. By my 1mproved construction proper ventilation is provided for without sacrificing the protective feature of the earlier diaper covers.

The novel features of my invention will be pointed out in the claim annexed hereto. In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of my invention and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a modified form.

These connections, as shown in the drawing, may be in the form of elastic bands 3 between the side edges and extending across the openings 2. The lower ends may be connected by pieces of non-elastic cord or tape 4, tied together as in Fig. l, or elastic bands may be used at the lower ends as shown in Fig. 2, and similar to the aforementioned bands 3. The bands 3 are preferably detachably connected at one end to either the front or rear portion of the cover by snap fasteners or other fastening means 5 and permanently attached at the other end to the opposite portion. It will be seen from the drawings that the connections between the front and rear coverare such as to provide openings with substantially parallel sides, but tapered slightly so as to be a trifle narrower at the bottom than the top. This is brought. about in part by the adjustable tie strings l at the bottom. This gives proper ventilation and at the same time tends to prevent leakage of moisture at the bottom. The crotch 6 is preferably wide and straight, adding to the loose fit and assisting in the ventilation. In the form shown in Fig. 1 the crotch is permanently closed and acts as a hinge on which the front and rear portions are swung away from each other when the cover is opened. There are open spaces between the crotch and the side edges through which the legsof the child extend. A cord or tape 8 at the rear of the cover is an additional means of adjustment for the waist band.

In addition to proper ventilation, it will be seen the construction affords means for readily opening the cover for removal and enables it to be spread out fiatfor cleaning.

In the modified form of diaper cover, shown in Fig. 2, the ventilating openings 2 and elastic bands 3 are provided at one side only of the diaper covers. In this case I prefer to make the front and rear portions of the diaper cover detachable also at the crotch portion 6 and normally held together by a snap fastener or fasteners or other fastening means 9. In other respects the diaper cover is the same as that of Fig. 1.

The diaper cover of my invention is self supporting and is easily washed and its constrnction permits of proper ventilation therethrough, allows the garment to be automatically adjusted to whatever position the body may take and makes its attachment to and removal from the body very easy.

I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction herein described and illustrated as modifications could be made which would not depart from the spirit of my invention.

\Vhat I claim as new and desire to secure Letters Patent of the United States is:

A one piece Waterproof diaper cover which is substantially fiat when in open p0- sition and adapted thereby to fit loosely on the body when in its closed position, and cover comprising a front and a rear portion and provided with open spaces on each side of the center at the extremities of the crotch to form leg openings, the side edges of the front and rear portions being separated a substantial distance from each other the greater part of their length and adapted to be brought close together at their lower ends, when in position on the child, and connections between said front and rear portions for holding the cover to ether in position whereby the separated side edges will provide ventilating spaces for the ventilation of the interior of the cover.
