a citizen ofthe United States, residingat IIopedale, county of forcester and` State' of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Thread-Parters and Thread- Clamps, of which the following description, in connection'with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
The present invention relates to thread parting andclamping means for looms.
In filling replenishing looms of the feeler type, wherein mechanism is employed for introducing a fresh supply of filling to a running shuttle or substituting a filled shuttle for the one in use, the end 5 of the old filling extends from the cloth to the shuttle containing the carrier or bobbin to be abandoned, and it is desirable that this end of filling be removed from the loom `so that it shall not be carried into the shed. Means have been provided to this end, among which may be mentioned that eX- ploited in the patent to Northrop and Stimpson, No. 641,792, January 23, 1900, and that in the patent to Draper, No.
683,423, September 24, 1901. In the former,

In the presentv invention, the thread parter and thread clamp may have the characteristic movement from the front of the loom toward the lay to clamp and part the filling upon call for filling replenishment, and then back again tol initial position as in the patents noted, and, in connection therewith, the invention contemplates that after return to initial position at the front of the loom,
by the former, as well as various other important features of the invention, will be made clear from the following description and accompanying drawings of a good form of means for lcarrying the invention into practical effect, it being understoodthat in its true scope the invention is defined by the claims.

further illustration and description herein is unnecessary.
The rear end portion of the shuttlezfeeler arm or carrier 5 is provided with a shoulder 8 and a thread rest 9, the front and side portions 10 and 11 of the thread rest 9 being beveled or out aWay,.as indicated in Fig. 2, in order that the lling thread leading from the cloth selvage to the shuttle may readily position itself upon the rest 9 and be guided thereto by the inclined portions 10 and 11.
The present invention contemplates that upon call for filling replenishment, the shuttle feeler arm or carrier 5 shall be moved from its front or inoperative position to its rear or operative position to act upon the filling thread, and that there shall be provided a thread parter to part the filling and a thread clamp to clampvthe end of the filling leading from the vcloth selvage sok that upon the return of theshuttle feeler arm or carrier 5 to its front or inoperative position, the end of the filling thread leading from the cloth selvage shallv be carried forward and held in position for the action ofY the usual temple thread parter.
In the present formA of the invention, the thread parter comprises a fixed blade 12 secured to the endportion of the shuttle feeler arm or carrier 5, substantially as indicated in Figs. 2 and 5, and a relativelyimovable member 13 Which maybe appropriately sup-` ported Ybythe shuttle feeler arm or carrier for relative movement With respect to the companion member 12 of the thread parter `to part the filling.

The present invention contemplates'that after the thread parter has parted the filling between the cloth and shuttle, and the thread clamp has engaged the end of the filling leading from the cloth, and the thread parter and thread clamp have returned to initial position at the front `of the loom, the clamp will continue to hold the end of the filling leading from the cloth until or about the time the Vtemple thread cutter parts thethread at the cloth selvage, and that then the thread parter and thread clamp shall be opened to again perform their parting and clamping functions on a subsequent call for filling replenishment. To this end, the weight 22 connected to the tail end portion of the movable member of the thread parter, is made suiiciently heavy lto move the movable member of the thread parter into open position under the vibrating influence of the loom; and to effect release of the filling end leading from the cloth, the thread clamp is also under operative influence of said weight.
As one means to thus operate the thread clamp, and cause it to release the end of the filling leading to the cloth selvage at the front of the loom, the present invention contemplates a connection between the weight and the thread clamp, so that as the said weight opens the thread parter it may act also to unclamp the thread.
In the present form of the invention, the thread clamp is shown as formed of spring wire having a coil portion 29 wound abo-ut the outer portion of the bolt 14, between the head 30 thereof and the spring washer 16. From the coil portion 29 the clamping member leads forward, or to the left, in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, and passes through the slotted portion 28 of the back wall 27 of the lug 23, its outer end'being turned upwardly as indicated in Fig. 3, in order to direct the filling thread between the end portion of the clamp and the groove or seat 24. The rearwardly-extending portion 31 of the thread parter engages a stud 32 eX- tending laterally from the weight 22, the construction being such that when the thread parter is closed to perform its parting function by engagement of the bunter 20 with the tail portion of the movable member of the parter, the weight 22 will be lifted, and the thread parter be turned about the bolt 14 as an axis to clamp the thread between the end of the parter and the grooved lug 23, substantially as indicated in Fig. 5, the parts at such time being in their operative or rear position with respect to the lay. When the shuttle eeler arm or carrier 5 is Vweight 22 is such, however, that acting upon `the tail portion of the parter and under the vibrations of the loom, the movable member of the parter will be turned about its pivotal axis to open or separate the members of the parter, and, since the thread clamp is connected to the movable member vof the parter through the weight 22, it likewise partakes of such movement and, after the filling has been parted at the cloth selvage, unclamps the end, thus permitting it to drop clear of the operating parts of the loom.
It is found convenient and preferable to have the thread clamp move into engagement with the filling thread in advance of the thread parter and to hold the filling firmly against the lug 23 as the parter performs its parting function. This is edected in the present form of the invention by positioning the clamping portion of the clamp somewhat in advance of the parting edge of the parter so that as the clamp and parter move to closed position, the clamp will first engage the thread and thereafter the parter 'will part it. In the character of clamp at the front of the loom, because the rear end portion 3l of the wire clamp acts with spring force to assist in the downward movement of the weight 22 under the influence of the loom vibration.
From the construction described as a convenient form of the present invention, it will be noted that when the thread parter and thread clamp have been moved to operative position toward the rear of the loom, and have performed their thread clamping and thread parting functions, and then return to inoperative position toward the front of the loom, the weight is suliicient to move the movable member of the parter and then to release the end of the filling thread from the cla-mp without the interposition of any exterior means. Thus, a simple, yet eifective and reliable mea-ns is provided to part the filling between the cloth and the shuttle, to carry it to the front of the loom, and then release it.
What is claimed-is:-
1. In a loom, a thread parter and a thread clamp movable toward the lay into operative position to part and clamp the filling between the cloth and shuttle, and gravity means acting to open the parter and clamp after the parter and clamp have been returned to inoperative position at the front of the loom.
2. In a loom, a thread parter comprising relatively movable members, means for re tarding relative movement of said members, and means acting continuously upon Y the parter and clamp to permit them to remain closed until they are returned to front Vposition and then acting to open them and release the filling end at the front of the'loom.
3. In a filling replenishing loom, `a thread parter comprising relatively movable mem-- bers, means for retarding relative movement of said members, and a Weight for relatively separating said members after they have been returned to front position. K
4. In a filling replenishing loom, a thread parter comprising relatively movable members, means for retarding too free relative movement of said members, and causing them to remain closed after a parting and clamping action, and a Weight connected to one of said members for relatively separating said members to free the filling end after the parter and clamp have returned to front position.
5. In a filling replenishing loom, a thread parter comprising relatively movable members, means for retarding relative movement of said members, a Weight for relatively separating said members,pand an independent thread clamp operated by said Weight to unclamp the thread after the thread has been carried to the front of the loom.
6, In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of a thread parter comprising relatively movable members, an independent ythread clamp, and a Weight connected to both the thread parter and thread clamp for relatively separating the members of the thread parter and opening the clamp.
7. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of a thread parter and thread clamp movable from an inoperative position at the front of the loom tov an operative position nearer the rear of the loom, means for closing the parter and clamp when in operative position, and a Weight for opening the parter and clamp after they have been returned to inoperative position at the front of the loom.

12. In a device of the character described, the combination ofk va thread parter and thread clamp, and a Weight connected to the clamp to cause the clamp to open and free the thread after the clamp has returned to front position in the loom.
13. In a filling replenishing loom, a thread parter comprising relatively movable mem-x,
bers to engage and part the thread, and means acting continuously upon the parter to permit the members to remain closed after a thread Aparting operation until they have been returned to front position and then acting to open them at the'front position.
