, WVhen the shuttle is improperly positioned theshuttle feeler engages the side ofthe shuttle and is forced backwardly carrying the usual dog" out of the path of the hunter upon the lay and thus avoiding transfer. When, however, the shuttle is properly boxed the shuttle feeler'passes beyond the end of the shuttle and the'filling-parting and clamping devices are caused to receive, cut and clamp the filling end. Upon movement of the lay in the opposite direction the shuttle feeler moves forward in an arcuate path and draws the filling end into the usual temple thread cutter. This mechanism is well known and is'of'the general character disclosed in the patent to Northrop and Stimpson granted Jan. 28, 1900, No. 641,792, and in the patent toDraper No. 683,423 granted Sept. 24C, 1910.
Where, as sometimes occurs, the filling balloons or slackens at the time the parting device moves forward itsometimes falls be low the end of the parting deviceand is not severed, in which case it is apt to be caught and carried back into the cloth making'an imperfection therein.

" The mechanism of the loom which is illustrated herein is of the well known Nor- 7 upon the lay 8 which is carried upon the usual swords 9. V
The thread parting and clamping mechanisms are carried upon the usual shuttle feeler 10 which is pivotally and slidably mounted at its lower end' upon a stud 11, projecting laterally from the arm 12 of a bracket'13. The shuttle feeler is actuated in the usual manner by an arm 14 rigidly connected to the controller rod 15 which is oscillated by a moving actuator rpon detectlon of farlureot filllng by a weft ":toi'l'r or feeler.
The thread cutting and clamping mechamsm as illustrated herem comprises a memher or plate16 having laterally extending flanges or lugs 17 and 18 fixedly secured to the shuttle feeler 10 by a bolt 19 and a stud r rivet 20. c 7 1 The lower portion of the rearward end of the member 16 has a wide web 21' which forms a support for the filling end and also serves as a ledger plate with which the fill ing clamping means coeperatesa The outer end of the'm'ember 16 is fork shaped to cor respond substantially with the usual forked shaped end of the shuttle feeler. The cutting blade and the movable clamping member are preferably so connected as to move in unison and are pivotally mounted upon the same shaft. 'As shown in the present drawing the cutter blade 22 lies between the member or plate16 and the feeler 10 and is pivotally mounted upon'the bolt 19. It 00- operates with a stationary ledger blade 23 which is secured to the face of the shuttle feeler 10 beneath the lower arm of its bifurcated end.
The movable clamping 'member comprises a metallic plate 24 and preferably a.
fiber plate 25 of the same size and shape which are pivotally mounted upon the bolt 19. A spring 26 coiled about the stem of the bolt 19 and lying between its head and the clamping plate 24: serve's'to force the clamping plate 24 yieldably against the member 16 so that it will cooperate properly with the ledger Jlate 21. The member or plate 16 is firmly orced against the cutting blade by a dished washer '27 which lies between a s'houlder upon the bolt and the inner face of the plate or member 16.
The movable cutting blade 22 and clamping members 24, 25 are rigidly secured together at their opposite ends by a pin 28 having a laterally extending stein operable in a manner'which will hereinafter be described to actuate these movable parts in such a manner as'to open the cutting and clamping mechanism.
The movable cutting blade is provided with a downwardly extending heel 29 adapted to be engaged by the lay when the filling parting device moves rearwardly and meets the approaching lay. This heel desirably'is reinforced by a block 30 of considerably greater thickness than the blade itself both for the purpose of strengthening the partsand for providing a sufficiently .broad engaging surface to prevent'the cutting of the lay.

By this construction the switchlcainengages thepin 28 upon the rearward movement of the shuttle feeler and depressesit so as to; open the'movable blades of the clamp and cutter during the-movement of the parting device to filling engaging position. I
The tension of thespring's 26 and 27 serves to hold the parting and clampingdevice open until the filling enters between the movable and stationary jaws thereof and until the lay striking against the heel 29 of the movable cutter closes said jaws to cut and clamp the filling, Upon the for Ward movement'of the shuttle feeler 10 the pin 28 pushesaside theswitclitani 82, so" that the clamp may remain'closed until the next rearward movement of the shuttle feeler.

The present invention is designed to overcome this defect and comprises ayieldable member carried by the thread parting and clamping mechanisms which is adapted to engage the lay and passing'benea'th any filling which may rest upon it, pick said filling up and guide it into the jaws of the parting and clamping mechanism.
A preferred instrumentality' for thus picking up the slack filling end comprises a spring wire 35 coiled about the bolt 19 and having one end 36 anchored in the flange 17 of the plate or member 16, while its other end is bent into substantially triangular form, thus providing a downward and forward extension 37 and a forwardly extending portion 38. The wire 35 preferably lies in a slot extending longitudinally and substantially centrally of the ledger blade 21 preferably extending to the junction of the web or flange 18 therewith,
The wire 35 is so constructed and wound upon the bolt 19 that the triangular end normally lies in a position beneath the ledger plate 21 as is illustrated in Fig. 1.
In order to insure the passage of the pick up 85 beneath any slackened filling which may lie upon or adjacent to the lay the race plate 39 of the lay is provided with a recess 40 along its forward edge to receive the pick up 35 and a portion of the race plate has a bevel 41 which serves as a cam to raise the pickup and thereby cause it to guide the filling into the jaws of the thread part-ing and clamping device.
This mechanism while very simple in construction is exceedingly efiicient in operation and effectively guides a 'slackened filling into the jaws of the thread parting and clamping device. The smooth surface of the wire member 35 readily enters beneath the filling .and raises it so that the advancing jaws of the filling parting member pass over it. The angle of inclination of the portion 37 of the pick up member may be and preferablyis such as to cause said pick up member when in thread supporting position to incline downwardly toward the bases of the jaws of the parting and clamping mechanism thereby still further tending to force the filling into the field of action of the jaws.
It will be understood that whilethe pick up instrumentality is described herein as of wire it may be made of any suitable material and may be located in convenient position to perform the functions herein described.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a loom comprising a shuttle feeler, means upon said shuttle feeler to part and clamp the filling adjacent the shuttle including a stationary ledger plate, cutting and clamping members located respectively on opposite sides thereof and movable relatively thereto, means located intermediate and clamping members located respectively on opposite sides thereof, means for simultaneously actuating said cutting and clamping members, means for picking up the filling comprising a yieldable member guided in a slot in said ledger plate intermediate of said 1' cutting and clamping members adapted to pass beneath the filling upon the beat-up of the lay and means for raising said yielding member to cause the filling to enter the cutting and clamping mechanism.
3. In a loom comprising a shuttle feeler, means upon said shuttle feeler to part and clamp the filling adjacent the shuttle including a stationary ledger plate, cutting and clamping members located respectively on opposite sides thereof and having a common pivotal connectiommeans operable by engagement with the lay upon its beat-up simultaneously to oscillate said members, means for picking up the filling including a spring wire coiled upon the pivotal support of said cutting and clamping members and guided in a slot in said ledger plate intermediate of said cutting and clamping plates, the end of said yieldable member being formed to engage said lay and to enter beneath the filling and means upon said lay for raising the end of said yieldable member to cause the filling to enter the cutting and clamping means.
4:. In a loom comprising a shuttle feeler, means upon said shuttle feeler to part and clamp the filling adjacent the shuttle including a stationary ledger plate and relatively movable cutting and clamping members located at opposite sides of said ledger plate, means operable by engagement of the lay to close said cutting and clamping means and a yieldable member mounted in a slot in said ledger plate adapted to engage the lay .and entering beneath the filling to guide the latter into the jaws of the cutting and clamping means.
5. In a loom comprising a shuttle feeler,
