Description

(LWMeston Fruit 130x.
No. H9 ,806. Patented on. 1'o,1a71.
Vit-IIQSSQS r lnvento r e x QM UNITED STATES CHARLES W. WESTON, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FRUIT-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,806, dated October 10, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. WESTON, of city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improved Fruit-Box; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawing are suificient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make-and use my said invention or improvements without further invention or experiment.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of fruit-boxes in which two thin strips or veneers of wood, paper, or other thin flexible materials are placed crosswise and their ends turned up to form the sides of the box; and it consists in forming a rim to the box and binding the sides together by making the sides of extra length and then turning them down over a wire or other suitable stiffeningrim.
In order to more fully illustrate and explain my invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which a and I) represent two veneers or other thin flexible strips, which are laid one across another so that the two thicknesses will form the bottom of the box. The projecting ends 6, when turned up, form the sides of the box. In order to form a rim to this box I make these projecting ends of a longer length than is intended for the height of the sides. I then gouge out a channel, 0, on the inside of these side pieces, and place a wire, d, or other stifi'ening-rim in the channel thus formed. The upper portions of the sides are then folded or doubled over the stifiening d to the inside, as shown, and there fastened either with tacks, paste, glue or by other convenient means.
By thus constructing the box I give it great strength, and am enabled to make the boxes of any desired sizea consideration not heretofore obtained, as in the usual way of making them nothing but small boxes can be successfully made.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The veneers or other thin flexible strips a I) having the lengthened ends 0 doubled over a wire or other stiifening-rim, d, in order to form a rim to the box, substantially as above described.
