To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ARTHUR R. ZIMMER- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shamokin, in the county of Northumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ink-Wells, of which the followingis a specication.
The invention relates to ink wells, and has for its primary object to provide a well of this character wherein the Stoppers or `closures for the fonts or chambers for the ink are automatically moved to closing position so as to prevent the evaporation of the ink when the well is not in use.
Another obj ect of the invention is the provision of an ink well of this character wherein the Stoppers or closures are simultaneously operated by depressing a key lever for the opening thereof so that the pen point can be dipped within the fonts or chambers for containing the ink.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an ink well of this character wherein the construction thereof isl novel in form to avoid deterioration or evaporation of the ink therein when the well is not in use.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a well of this character which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its purpose, readily and easily opened and inexpensive in manufacture.
Other objects Will be in part obvious and in part hereinafter set forth.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter set forth, and the scope of the application of Awhich will be indicated in the appended claim.

Referring to the drawing in detail, the ink well comprises a body A made from any suitable material, having therein independent ink chambers or wells 5 accessible Specication of Letters Patent.

through dip openings 6 formed in the top of the body A, while between the said chambers or wells 5 and formed in the body A is a vertical slot 7 forming a guideway for a depressible actuating lever 8 which, at its forward end, is formed with a button or key 9 for operating .the same for a purpose presently described. Removably fitted within the dip opening 6 in the top of the body 'A are caps or closure members 1() which form Stoppers for the said openings and which are integrally formed with an arm 11, these arms being fixed to a rocking shaft 12 journaled in bearings 13 mounted in the top of the body A of the well so that on the rocking of the shaft 12 the closures or caps 10 will be simultaneously moved for the opening or closing of the openings 6 in the top of the body A, as will be clearly apparent.
rl`he rocking shaft 13 is formed with a crank 14 which works within the slot 7 and this crank is connected with the lever 8 so that on the depressing of the latter the crank 14 will be turned for the rocking of the shaft 12 to lift the closure or cap A10, whereby the pen can be dipped into the ink in the chamber or well 5 through the openings 6 in the top of the body A of the ink we Surrounding the shaft 12 is a coiled tension spring 15 which has one end working against the top of the body A of the ink well while the other end works against onel ofthe ends of the arm 11, and this spring is normally designed to hold the caps 10 in closing position relative to the opening 6 in the top of the body of the ink well. When the closures or caps 10 are raised to open position the spring 15 will act to automatically close the said closures or caps when the lever 8 is released in a manner presently described. Bridging the slot 7 at the top of the body A is a loop 16 which limits the upward movement of the lever 8 after depressing the same.
Formed at the bottom of the slot 7 is a lateral notch 17 in which is adapted to engage the lever 8 when depressed so as to lock the same for holding the closures or caps 10 in raised or open position against the resistance of the spring 15 surrounding the rocking shaft 12 to which the arms 11 of the closures or caps are fastened. The lever 8 is swingingly supported upon a pivot 18 mounted in the body A of the ink well.
`- with the chambers, caps vclosing said openings, a rocking shaft journaled on the top of the body, arms supporting the caps and xed to the shaft, means for tensioning the shaft to normally hold the caps in closed position, a lever pivoted in the slot and having a key disposed forwardly of the front of the body, a crank formed in the shaft and loosely engaged in the lever, and means bridging the slot to limit the movement of the lever in one direction, the said slot being formed with a lateral branch to receive the lever when moved in the opposite direction for locking the same.
