WALTER C. SECKIVIAN, OF PINEY, WEST VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF TO FRED Il.
LUTON, OF PINEY,
I/VEST VIRGINIA.
Application filed December 8, 1913.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, WALTER C. SECKMAN, citizen of the United States, residing at Piney, in the county of Wetzel and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Non-Spillable Ink-VVells, of which the following is a specifcation, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to ink wells, and it more particularly relates to an improved form. of non-spilling ink wells.
An object of the invention is to provide, in an ink well of this character, a self-stopping mechanism whereby the mouth of the ink well is automaticallystopped the instant the well is tipped from its normal position, so that it is impossible to spill ink from the well by overturning it.
Another object of the invention is to provide an ink well of this character which is massive and capacious, neat and ornamental, l
strong and durable, simple of construction,
comparatively inexpensive and thoroughly practical and efficient.
In the accompanying drawings, whlch supplement this specification, Figure 1 is an elevation view of my improved ink stand or ink well; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the middle portion of the device, taken at right angles to Fig. 1; Fig. 8 is a top plan view of the device; and Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view through the middle portion of the device on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
In these drawings, in which similar reference characters correspond with similarv parts throughout the several views. the body or receptacle 5 may be made of glass composition, or any suitable material, and is formed with a vertical slot 6, a bottom re, cess or weight seat 7 and an aperture 8, the latter establishing communication between the weight seat and the groove 6. 'lhe mouth 9 of the reservoir 9 is disposed sub, stantially in the center of the top of the body 5 and communicates with a stopper-v seat or guide 10 through an inwardly converging aperture 11; said stopper guide also being in communication with the slot 6.
A pivot pin or fulcrum 12 extends across the slot 6 and carries a lever 13 one end of which is pivotally connected to the stopper, 14, by means of a link 15, and has its other end pivotally connected to a reciprocatory Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 1&1, 1915.
Serial No. 805,130.
A weight 19, which is of substantially frustopyramidal shape is adapted to fit snugly within the frusto-pyram`idal aperture 7, and this weight is provided with a slot 20 extending from side to side through its top, and within this slot 20 is provided a holder lug 21, adapted to engage with the shoulder 17, for the purpose of holding the stopper 14 in its normal open position, through the medium of the link 15 and lever 13, as illustrated in the drawing.
The ink well is opened by placing a finger or thumb on the upper end of the lever 13 and drawing it outward, thereby drawing the link and stopper outward and forcing the holder member 16 inward, so that its shoulder 17 engages with the shoulder or holder element 21. Now, it will be seen that in order to close the ink well it is only necessary to slightly raise or tip the body 5, so that the weight 19 descends by gravity and releases its engagement with the member 16, whereupon the spring 22 forces the member 16 outward and co-acts with the lever 13 and link 15 for forcing the stopper 14 inward and wedging it snugly within the aperture 11` so as to efectually close the mouth of the ink well.
This device not only eifectually prevents the spilling of ink, but it also provides a convenient, easy and quick way of stopping and unstopping the ink well, and avoids the necessity for looking for lost ink well stoppers.
It is obvious that I may provide any proper means for movably securing the weight to the body 5. For instance I may provide the weight 19 with a groove 19, having seated therein a strip or bar 5', which latter is secured rigidly to the body 5, and the weight is movable relative thereto, so that it will operate as described in the foregoing without becoming entirely disenl gaged from the body 5.
It will be seen that I have provided a device of this character which is fully capable of attaining the foregoing objects in a thoroughly practical and eifective manner.
Vhile the accompanying drawings illustrate what I believe to be the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited there to, but that various changes may be made in the construction, arrangement, and proportions of the parts without departing from the scope of the invention, as delined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. An automatically closing inl; well comprising a hollow body provided with a mouth and with a stopper guide communieating with said mouth, said hollow body being provided with a weight seat and with a spring pressed holder' member extending into the weight seat, a stopper member slidable in the guide and adapted for closing the mouth of the ink well, means operatively connecting the holder member with said stepper for normally holding the stopper' in closing position, and a weight provided with means for engaging said holder member and (so-acting with the first said means for holding the stopper in non-closing position, said weight adapted to be disengaged from said holder member when the inl: well is raised or tipped.
2. An ink well comprising a hollow body provided with a discharge opening, a member disposed through the body and capable of endwise movement, a closure member for the discharge opening, an operative connection between the closure member'and the endwise movable member, automatic means coacting with the endwise movable member for holding the closure member in closed p0- sition 4relative to the discharge opening, and a movable member coacting with the endwise movable member for maintaining the closure member in open position when the ink well is in normal position.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aiiiX my signature in the presence of two witnesses. VVALTER'C. SECKMAN. Witnesses: v
JOHN E. JONES, Jr., IV. T. SPRANKEL.
Copies of Athis patent may be obtained for ve cents each, br-'addressing the Commissioner of Patents; Washington, D. C.
