Description

F. A.' WEEKS.
INKSTAND.
APPLICATION man 050.27. 1909.
186,633. 4 PatentedJune 13,1916.
lll' j WlTEU @TTES PATENT @FFQEL FRANK A.. WEEKS, OF PLAINFIELD, NEW JERSEY.
INKSTAND.
Application filed December 27, 1909.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, FRANK A. WEEKS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Plainfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jerseyfhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inkstands, ot'iwhich the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in inkstands7 and its object is to provide a highly desirable and convenient inkstand comprising a novel base containing, preferably, two or more ink-wells, and a loose rotary removable cover applied over said wells and having a dip-opening which on the rotary movement of the cover may be carried over either oli' said wells, said dip-opening during the non-use of the inkstand being over a solid portion thereof which closes said opening and by being slightly convexed upwardly to enter the opening operates to hold the cover' stationary concealing both or all the ink-wells.
The invention consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed and will be understood from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective viewy of an inkstand embodying my invention, the cover being shown in closed position or concealing thc ink-wells and with the dip-opening in the cover closed at its lower end; Fig. 2 is a central vertical longitudinal section of the same, on the dotted line 2 2 of Fig. 4; Fig. 3 is a .vertical transverse section of the same, on the dotted line 3-3 of Fig. 4; and Fig. il is a top view of the base of the inkstand, the cover being omitted.
ln the drawings, 10 designates the glass base of the stand and 11 the rotary cover therefor. The base 10 may be formed with a front pen-rack 12 and contains two substantially semi-circular side by side ink-wells 13 for use in holding different inks. Red ink may be placed in one well 13 and .black ink in another well. The ink-wells are separated by an integral partition 111 extending centrally from front to rear and merging at its front end into a widened portion or table 15 which bears a slightly upwardly convexed hump or projection 1G. Extending around the wells 13 is a circular encompassing raised flange 17, outside of which the Surf Speoication of Letters Patent.

face of the base 10 isl preferably iiat. The
base 10 is a low rectangular glass-block of considerable area beyond the wells 13 and when placed on a desk or table is not liable under any usual conditions to be upset.
The cover' 11 will preferably be formed of composition and it is in the general form of a disk having an convexed upper side and a depending encompassing flange 18 which lits loosely around and embraces the ilange 17 on the base 10, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The cover 1l is formed at one side of its center with a dipopening 19 which, by the rotation of the cover, may be located or moved over either well 13 to admit a pen thereto. The dip-opening 19 may also be moved over the table lwhen the inkstand is not in use so that the cover may fully conceal both wells 13, and for yieldingly retaining the cover in its well-concealing or closed position I provide on the table 15 the convex projection 16 over which the cover may ride and around which the dip-opening 19 will settle when said opening reaches the same. The projection 16 serves as a guide to the user in closing the inkstand and by extending upwardly into the opening 19 arrests the cover in its proper closed position and yieldingly there retains it.Y I regard it as important that the base be provided with the upwardly extending flange 17 to receive and be encompassed by the depending flange 18 on the cover. The cover 11 is entirely free to be lifted oli from the base at any time and it is also capable of free rotation on said base, the t of the flange 18 on the flange 17 being a loose one.
What 1 claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A two-part inkstand comprising an integral rectangular glass base formed well within its vertical edges with two substantially semi-circular side-by-side open-top ink-wells separated from each other by a partition integral with the base extending centrally from front to rear and a front table portion -set inwardly within the circle deiined by said wells and into which the front end of said partition merges, and .with a raised circular flange integral with the base and extending around said wells, table portion and the rear end of said partition, said base being extended outwardly beyond said flange and aiording a Het top, and a Signed :it New York city, in the county of circular rotary disk cover having e, dip- New York, and State of New York, this l) opening and a depending suroundng gauge 22nd dey of December A. D. 1909. ttin loosely over the sai oirou ar ange and ireely 4removable therefrom, said dip- Y FRANK A' WEEKS' opening being located to, on the rotation of Witnesses: the cover, rest over said table portion o1i over ATHUR MARION, eitherof said wells, as shown and described.
