No. 119,600. K Patentedocr. 3,1871...v
UNITED STATES PATENT CEEIOE.
SAMUEL GISSINGEE, OE PITTSBUEG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BED-BOTTOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,600, dated October 3, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL GISSINGER, of Pittsburg, in the county Ot' Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bed-Bottoms 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention consists in the arrangement-Of the frame, rollers, canvas, with hooks and guides at the sides of the canvas, bearings for rollers, and pawl-and-ratchet wheels, the Whole constructed and arranged as hereinafter described.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed tO describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawing, which forms part of my speciication, Figure l is a perspective vievsr of my improvement in bed-bottom. Fig. 2 is an end view Of the same.
A represent the side rails, B the cross-bars, and D e the ends Or rollers of the frame. At each end of the side rails are metal supports or bearings K and K for the rollers D ande. The roller D is provided with a ratchet-wheel, c', which, in connection with the pawl or catch j pivoted tO One of the metal bearings K, is used for holding the roller D in a fixed position. The roller D is enlarged at its center and tapers gradually tO- ward each end, as shown in Fig. 2. The canvas G is secured to the rollers D and e in any suitable manner, and is at each side provided with hooks n, which move on guides j', as shown in Fig. l.
By constructing a bed-bottom as hereinbefore described the canvas C will always be stretched equally at all points of it, and it will not be liable to swag'at its center. The swag or bagging down in the center has always been a great objection to the use of canvas bed-bottoms. This objection I remove by the use of the roller D, the Operation of which is to draw on the central portion Of the canvas by turning the roller.
Having thus described my improvement, what I claim as of my invention is- A The arrangement of the frame, consisting Of side pieces A and cross-bars B, rollers D e, ratchetwheel z', pawl j, hooks n, guides f, and canvas C, arranged and operating as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
S. GISSINGER.
