Vith the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description prorceeds, the vinvention resides in the combina- Y tion and arrangement of` parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being r understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can bemade within the scope of what is claimed without `departing from the spiritof the invention.`

Each clip 10 is provided at its outer ends with fingers Y 11 which engage the outeredges of the bottom flanges2, and intermediate `its ends,

The fingers 11 and 12 may be corrugated slightly, in a vertical direction as shown atll in Fig 3 so` as to enhance their grip` on the flanges 2.- `'Ihe space between the side portions 7 of the body of the tie may be' occupied'by a concrete filler 15. The rail 19 is then mounted in place as shown in Fig. 3, the base of the rail being engaged between the up'standing flanges 18 on the tie plate. Then the secondary fastener 26 is inserted, its notch 27 engaging the tie plate 16 and the flange 3, so that the secondary fastener cannot move endwise. The primary lfastener 20 is then mounted in place as shown in Fig. 3. The wedgeshaped cotter pin 29 is inserted into the opening formed by the notches 2S, and is driven to a firm seat, the lingers 30 of the cotter pin being bent over Vif desired.. Since the wedge 29 tapers both vertically and horizontally, theprimary fastener 20 is crowded transversely so that its head 24 overhangs the base of the rail 19, and, by theoperationof the wedge 29, the same, engaging the fired fastener 26the fastener 20 is forced downwardly so-that its head 24 has a firm bearing on the base of .the rail 19. The fastener 2O is made of malleable metal and after the said'fastener has been seated as above described, its lower end may be bent to form a lateral foot 25 engaging the lower edge of the intermediate flangeV 21, as Fig.
-3 will clearly show. At this point it may lbe stated in connection with the` primary fastener v20 Vand its foot 25, that the concrete filler 15 may or may not beresorted to and, if desired, the center of the tie may merely be filled in withballast.

. Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:-- f

In a rail fastening means, a tie includa tie plate resting on the tie and provided with an upstanding flange; a. rail resting on the tie plate and engaged by the flange; a fastener located in the opening and including a laterally extended head engaging the rail, the head being out away'in its lower edge to clear the flange; a wedge cooperating with the fastener to force the fastener downwardly; and a Xed abutment with which the wedge engages.
