Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. I5, 1916.
Application filed November 15, 1915. Serial No. 61,479.
To all whom it may camera:
Be it known that I, FRANoIs J. MODER- MOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, county of New Haven, State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Protective Sheaths for Hose- Supporters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a protective sheath adapted to be used in connection with hose supporters upon garments, as waists and corsets, to which the supporters are attached, more especially in connection with washable waists. As ordinarily placed upon the market, the hose sup porters are provided at their upper ends with buckles and the garments are provided on opposite sides with straps to which the supporters are adjustably connected by means of the buckles. As a matter of neatness, appearance and safety, it is desirable that the buckles should be covered in order to protect the person of the wearer from the contactof metal therewith, and also to avoid the possibility of other garments catching on the buckles and soiling or tearing the garment, and not infrequently opening the buckle so that the hose supporter is released. In addition, to this, it is essential that the buckles be perfectly free of access so that the supporter may be conveniently attached and adjusted at any time. In order to accomplish these results and protect the person and clothing of the wearer from contact with the buckle, and to prevent the buckle from being accidentally opened by the movements or clothing of the wearer, I have devised a novel protective sheath adapted to be attached to the garment in connection with the straps, which incloses the straps loosely and wholly covers the buckles, but which may easily be pushed up for the purpose of attaching a supporter or adjusting the buckle, and then returned to place.
In the accompanying. drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a view of a garment, in the present instance a waist, showing the application thereto of my novel protective sheath, and Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the sheath pushed up to ezrpose the hose supporter buckle, as in adustlng the supporter or attaching it to a strap upon the garment.
10 denotes a garment, as for instance a washable waist, and 11 a hose supporter provided at its upper end with a buckle 12. It 1s common in various hose supporting garments to provide a strap, as 13, to which the hose supporter is adjustably connected by means of the buckle. This strap may be attached to the garment wherever required and in any manner that may be most convenient in making the garment.
In order to protect the person and clothing of the wearer and to prevent the buckle from becoming accidentally opened by the movements or clothing of the wearer, I provide the loose depending sheath 14 which is attached to the garment in connection with the strap and incloses the stra a and the upper end of the supporter as ar downward as may be required, certainly to a distance below the buckle. In the present instance, I have shown the outer face of the sheath as made shorter than the under face. This, however, is not an essential feature of the invention. In attaching or adjusting the hose supporter, the sheath is pushed up ward, as shown in Fig. 2, to expose the buckle, and after adjustment of the supporter the sheath is pulled down to place again as in Fig. 1.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
The combination with a garment, a depending strap attached thereto, and a hose supporter having a buckle at its upper end adapted to engage the strap, of a depending tubular sheath attached to the garment and loosely and completely inclosing the upper portion of the strap, the buckle, and the upper end of the hose supporter,.said sheath being slidable longitudinally of said strap and of said hose supporter to permit of exposure of the buckle.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
FRANCIS J. MoDERMOTT.
