To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, MORTON L. ADLER, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closet-Seat Hinges, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to hinges for water closet seats having novel means securing the seat thereto.

Heretofore hinges have been secured t0 closet seats by means of screws passing through a plate forming a part of the hinge on the under side of a seat and into the body of the seat. lhile this is a cheap and fairly satisfactory arrangement with wood seats, previously in common use, the introduction of molded hard rubber seats makes it desirable to provide a much stronger and better hinge, presenting a neater appearance than previously known hinges.

It is the object of my invention to provlde a hinge of strong construction and neat appear-ance, which may be easily applied to and -is particularly adapted for use with molded seats.

A further object of my invention is the provision of a hinge for closet seats, one member of which is adapted to be partially embedded within the seat, whereby the connection therewith is materially strengthened and the life of the seat is prolonged.

Other objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent as it is better understood by reference to the following specification when read in connection with the accompanying drawing in which- F igure,l is a plan View of a closet seat provided with my improved hinge; Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2-2 of Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2;

ably constructed of a core 4, comprising a plurality of layers of wood forming a laminated structure covered with a veneer 5 of hard rubber vulcanized to the'core 4. While the core 4 is described as a laminated wood construction it may obviously consist of other relatively inexpensive material such as vulcanized rubber compound consisting -`largely of reclaimed rubber, the invention in are the forwardly extending arms 11, prefer= ably formed integrally at their opposite ends with a plate 12 adapted to be embedded within a recess 14 in the lower face and at the rear of the core 4 and preferably secured thereto `by means of screws 1 3. It is to be understood that the plate 12 and the arms 11 are embedded within and secured to the core 4 previous to the application of the veneer 5, which is vulcanized to the core 4, entirely7 sea-ling the hinge-fastening means. It will be seen, therefore, that, when the seat 3 has been completed, one of the hinge members is securely fastened -in place and that the complementary hinge elements may be readily secured thereto, the result being a seat and` hinge of very strong construction which presents at the same time a neater appearance than any hinge heretofore offered to the public.

While I have shown and described the inventionas embodied in a closet seat having a laminated core covered with a veneer of hard rubber vulcanized to the core, ll reserve the right to embody the invention in seats of other construction, as for example laminated or solid wood seats, or seats constructed of a core of relatively inexpensive material with a veneer of hard rubber vulcanlzed thereto. Furthermore, while my invention is shown in connection with a seat per s e 1t is to be understood that it is equally appllcable to the cover which forms a part of the seat in the broader sense of the word and that the word seat as used in the accompanying claims is intended to have the broader meaning, so that the application of the invention is not limited to the specific disclosure of the drawings.

It will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention,

or sacrificing any of its material advantages,

- the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.

I claim:

The combination of a water closet seat and a hinge therefor, said seat comprising a core of laminated Wood having a recess in its lower face at the rear of the core and a yveneer of hard vulcanized rubber covering the core, a plate extending transversely of the seatat the rear thereof and embedded in said recess above the veneer at a distance MORTON L.
