To all "whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, EARLDLEY'C. B. J UB1), :1 subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closet-Seat Hinges, of which the following is a speclfication.

This invention relates to hinges for water closet seats and particularly to a simple and etfecti ve means for fastening the hinge to the seat.

It is the object of my invention to provide a hinge fastening adapted to be embedded within the body of a closet seat and to whichthe hinge may be readily secured.

A further object of my invention is the provision of a hinge of strong construction and neat appearance which may be easily applied to and is particularly adapted for use with seats having an outer covering or veneer of molded hard rubber.

Further objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent as it is better understood by reference to the following specification when read in connection with the accompanying drawing, illustratin the preferred embodiments thereof, in wh1ch Figure 1 is a plan view, partially in section, of a closet-seat embodying my invention; I

Fig. 4 is a plan view, partially in section, of a slightly different type of closet seat with my invention applied thereto;

Fig. 6 is a vertical section On the line 6-6v of Fig. 4.

Referring to Figs. 1 to 3 of the drawings, 1 indicates. a closet bowl provided with a rearwardly extending flange 2. 3 indicates a seat which may be of any suitable conformation but which is preferably constructed of a core 4 comprising a plurality of layers of wood forming a laminated structure which is covered with a veneer 5 of hard rubber vulcanized to the core 4. While the core 4 is described as of a laminated wood construction it may obviously consist of other material of relatively low cost, such as inexpensive vulcanized rubber compound consisting largely of reclaimed rubber, the invention in the present instance residing in the hinge and the means for securing it to the sea Embedded within the core 4 and spaced from the upperand lower layers of rubber veneer 5 is a member 6, preferably of metal. The bolts 13 are provided with spherical heads 19 having openings 20 therein to receive the ends of the transverse member 12, which member 12 passes through suitable openings in the ends of the hinge-members 11 to provide a pivotal connection ther'ebetween.

The transverse member 6 materially stiffens the structure of the seat 3, particularly with regard to the strains to which it is liable to be subjected in operating the hinge, the stresses resulting from such operation being distributed by the member 6 and the pins 7. The hinge is rigid in construction and it is practically impossible to dislodge it from the seat during ordinary and reasonable use.

Referring to Figs. 4 to 6 of the drawing 21 indicates a closet bowl provided with a rearwardly extending flange 22. A seat'is shown which may, be. of any suitable conformation consisting for example of, two separate wings 23, each preferably constructed of a core 24 comprising a plurality of layers of wood forming a laminated bothsides thereof.

Embedded within the cores 24 of the wings 23 are transversely extending members 25, preferably of metal, and each having spaced integral semi-cylindrical enlarged portions 26 extending therefrom on The members are identical with the members 6, previously described, but are shorter in order that they may be entirely inclosed within the cores,

24 of the Wings 23. Pins 27 are disposed through openings in the member 25 and the cores 24 to assist in preventing displacement of the members 25. Threaded openings 28 are provided in the. members 25 atthe enlarged portions 26 to receive the screws 29 which serve to maintain the hinge member 30 in rigid and close engagement with the rearward ends of the wings 23.

The hinge member 30 is provided with an ,opening extending longitudinally therethrough to receive a rod 31 which is held in position by nuts 32 on the ends thereof. Complementary hinge members 33 areprovided with openings through which the rod 31 passes, whereby the

members

30 and 33 are -maintained in pivotal relation and the hinge members 33 are'furtherprovided with "threaded extensions 34 adapted to be secured to the flange 22 of the bowl 21 inany suitablemanner.

While I have shown and described my invention as embedded in a closet seat having a .laminated wood core covered with a ve- .neer of hard rubber vulcanized thereto, I- reserve the right to embody'the invention'in seats of other construction, as for example laminated or solid wood seats as well as seats havinga core of relatively inexpensive .material and a veneer of hard rubber vulcanized thereto. F urthermore, whilemy invention is shown in connection with a seat per se it is 'to. be understood that it is equally applicable to the cover which forms a part of the seat in the broader sense of the word and the word seat as used in the accompanying claims is. used in its broader sense so that the application of the invention is not limited to the specific disclosure in the drawing.

It will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its material advantages, the forms hereinbefore described be- -1ng merely preferred embodiments thereof.

I claim:

1. The combination of a water closet seat and a hinge therefor, said seat comprising a core of laminated wood and a veneer of hard vulcanized rubber thereon, and a metal plate embedded in the core and spaced from the inner surface of the top and bottom layers of said veneer, said plate having threaded openings to receive hinge members.

2. The combination of a water closet seat and a hinge therefor, said seat comprising a'core and a veneer of hard vulcanized rubber thereon, and a plate embedded in the core and spaced from the inner surface of the top and bottom layers of said veneer and having spaced integral enlarged portions provided with threaded openings, and

hinge members engagin said openings.

- 3. The combination 0 a water closet seat and a hinge therefor, said seat comprising a core of laminated wood and a veneer of hard vulcanized rubber thereon, a metal plate embedded within the core and spaced from the inner surface of the top and bottom layers of said veneer, said plate having spaced integral semi-cylindrical enlarged portions extending therefrom on the top and bottom thereof and provided with threaded openings, and hinge members engaging said openings.
