JOHN JOHNSTON, 0F WOONSOGKET, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GEORGE H. BRIDGE, JR., OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
BOBBIN HOLDING AND GRIIPING DEVICE.
To all whomz't may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN JOHNSTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVoonsocket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bobbin Holding and Gripping Devices, of which the-following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in bobbin holding and gripping devices, and has for an objectto provide a structure embodying simplicity and practical features which render the invention eflicient in use.
A further aim resides in firmly securing the gripping device in a socket formed in the shuttle to which the former is applied.
The invention has for another object to provide a pivotally mounted bobbin holder and a frictional gripping device to engage with and retain the holder operative within the shuttle.
the shuttle left in elevation. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken about on line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a fragmentaryperspective .,of the bobbin holder. 4
The invention is seated ina socket 1 extending from one end of the bobbin cavity 2 of shuttle 3 and consists of an anchor block 4:, the spaced gripping plates or arms 5. and the ivotally mounted holder 6 for the bobbin The gripping arms 5 have parallel end portions 8 embracing the anchor block '4 and extend inwardly toward the bobbin cavity to constitute spaced'supports between which the holder 6 is pivotally mounted by pin 9. A screw bolt 10 is passed through the shuttle, anchor block and terminals 8 to secure the latter and block within the socket 1, while the pivot pin 9 extends through the.terminals 8 into the shuttle body, as depicted in Fig. 3. Thus the rear end of the gripping device is secured firmly Specification of Letters Patent.

each other and in spaced relation tothe side 'walls of the cavity as illustrated in Figs. 1
and 3. The inner or opposing faces of the free parallel terminals are provided with series of parallel vertical grooves or seats 12 for a 'purpose hereinafter described.
The inner end of anchor block 4 is provided with a curved seat' 13 on which the hemispherical face 14 of the pivoted end of the bobbin holder *6 bears. The holder is also provided with a downwardly extending shoulder 15 adapted to abut the anchor block to support the holder horizontally and extending upwardly from the holder is a cam 16 pressed against by a fiat spring 17. This spring serves to retain the holder in operative and inoperative positions andis secured to the anchor block by screw 18.
The bobbin 7 is slidably received on the holder 6 and is formed with an enlarged base 19 peripherally grooved to form seats for rings 20. V v
The distance between the free terminals of gripping arms 5 is slightly less than the diameter of rin s 20, therefore, the base 19 of the bobbin Wlll have to be forced betweem the arms in order that the rings 20 may engage in the seats 12, the arms yielding or springing apart to permit of such insertion of the bobbin. .Thus, the latter is fricdown into the cavity 2 whereby the base 19 and its rings 20 are forced between the gripping arms 5 and engaged in seats 12. The
arms tightly grip the bobbin to prevent any 95 sliding on the holder and consequently securely hold the former within the cavity.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters and rigidly in the socket by the pivotrpin Patentand the screw bolt.
In a shuttle, spaced gripping arms, an
