FASTENING MEANS FOR THE SLATS 0F SHUTTERS.
AppIication filed March 2, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Farm: BRAUN, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. James, in the county of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Means for the Slats of Shutters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in fasteners for tl e pivoted slats of blinds, and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character wherein the slats may be positively held in an open position or closed position or in a partly open adjustment.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved fastener whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simple, inexpensive and otherwise convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claims.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, 1 will now proceed to de-' scribe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in elevation of a shutter showing an embodiment of my invention applied thereto, the slats being in closed adjustment. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing the slats locked in a partial open position. Fig. 3 is a view also similar to Fig. 1 but showing the slats locked at the limit of their open adjustment. Fig. 4t is an enlarged sectional view taken substantially on the line d-1 of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a sectional View taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view in elevation illustrating a further em bodiment of my invention; Fig. 7 is a view, detached, in perspective of the bracket employed in the form of invention illustrated in Fig. 6; Fig. 8 is a View, detached, in perspective illustrating a modified form of bracket.
As disclosed in Figs. 1 to 5 of the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a shutter frame provided with transversely disposed pivoted slats 2 adapted to overlap in a conventional manner when in closed position, said slats being operatively engaged in a well known Specification of Letters Patent.

manner with the rod 3, whereby the slats may be caused to rock in unison. Pivotally engaged, as at 1-, with an intermediate slat 2, is a hook member H including the elongated shank 5 and the cross head 6, and when the slats are in closed position, the outer arm 7 of the cross head 6 is adapted to engage the headed member 8 carried by the adjacent marginal portion of the frame 1 said arm being preferably provided with a recess 9 to receive the shank of the headed member, whereby an effective locking action is afforded between the hook member H and the headed member 6. lFhen the slats 2 are at the limit of their open adjustment, the arm 7 is disposed inwardly and is adapted to be received within the recess 10 formed in the adjacent face of the frame 1, and the shank 5 of the hook member 'I is directed between the outstanding stop members 11 whereby it will be perceived that the slats 2 are effectively and positively held at the limit of their open adjustment. It will also be observed that the recess 10 is at a point below the headed member 8 and at a point intermediate the headed member 8 and the recess 10 is arranged the outstanding finger 12 having its outer extremity provided with an upstanding extension 14 disposed on an inward incline and when the slats 2 are in a partially open adjustment, the arm 7 is adapted to overlie said finger 12, whereby the angular end portion 14- will serve to hold the slats in their partially open position. 1 also find it of advantage to provide the outer longitudinal margin of the shank 5 of the hook member H with the recess or notch 15 so that no obstruction will be offered by the inner portion of the adjacent vertical stile of the frame 1 and the shank 5 when the same is adjusted into engagement with the finger 12. It is also to be observed that the inner marginalportion of the vertical stile of the frame 1 is provided with an angular upwardly directed shoulder 16 which extends within the recess 15 of the shank 5 when the hook member is in engagement with the finger 12, whereby a further locking means is afforded for the hook member H when the slats 2 are in partially open adjustment.
In order to positively limit the movement of the slats 2 into open position, I provide one of the vertical stiles 1 with the inwardly disposed stop pin or finger 17 with which a slat 2 engages when the slats are adjusted to open position, clearly shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the accompanying drawings.
In the form of invention illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7, the hook member I-I coacts with a bracket B suitably anchored to a vertical stile 1 of the shutter, said bracket being provided with the outstanding flange 18 having formed therein the transversely disposed open slot 19 to receive the hook member H when it is desired to lock the slats 2 at the limit of their open movement. The flange 18 is also provided with an upwardly directed oblique slot 20 to receive the hook member H when it is desired to lock the slats 2 in a partially closed position. The bracket B is also provided with an upstanding extension 21 having its inner face provided with a transversely disposed groove 22 to receive the hook member H when the slats 2 arevin closed position, whereby said slats will be maintained in this latter adj u stment.
In Figs. 6 and 7 the bracket B is preferably formed of cast metal, while in the form of invention illustrated in Fig. 8, the bracket 23 is formed of sheet metal and has one mar inal portion bent to afford the outmaintaining the slats in their closed position.
I claim:
1. In combination with a shutter comprising a frame and a plurality of pivoted slats mounted for rocking movement in unison, a. locking member pivotally engaged with one of the slats and having its outer end provided with a cross head, means carried by the frame engageable with the cross head of the pivoted member for holding the slats in locked position, and additional means disposed below the first named means with which the intermediate portion of the lock ing member coacts for holding the slats in a plurality of other positions.
2. In combination with a shutter comprising a frame and a plurality of pivoted slats adapted to rock in unison, a locking member carried by one of the slats, the outer end of said locking member being provided with a cross head, and a bracket carried by the frame and provided with an outstanding flange, the under face of the bracket at a point above the flange being provided with a recess to receive an end portion of the cross head when the slats are in closed position, the flange being provided with recesses to receive the locking member when the slats are in open or partly open positions.
In testimony whereof I hereunto ailix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
PETER BRAUN.
