Description

IN VEN TOR. 676757132 0? WITNESSES YJWM A TTORN E YS.
WALTER C. CLIFFORD, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
DETACHABLE HINGE.
mosses.
Application filed January 19, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER C. CLIFFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Detachable Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a detachable hinge.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a simple substantial, cheaply manufactured detachable hinge particularly adapted for use in connection with windows, shutters, doors and the like, and which is so constructed that the window may be readily removed without unscrewing any part of the hinge or ma rring the casing to which it is attached, when it is desired to wash or dust the window, the shutter or other member carried by the hinge.
Further objects will hereinafter appear.
The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a disassembled view showing the hinge sections folded out. Fig. 2 is a horizontal transverse section and assembled view of the hinge on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings in detail A indicates a window casing, 2 a window-sash mounted therein, and 3, the hinge by which the sash is carried. The hinge proper forms the subject matter of thepresent invention and is constructed as follows:
Referring to Fig. 1, 4L and 5 indicate the leaf sections of the hinge which are connected in the usual manner by the hinge 6 and a fixed pintle 7. The leaf section 5 is cut out as at 8 and the inner edge beveled as at 9 to form an interlocking member which will later be described. The inner edge of the leaf 5 is provided with a pair of alined knuckles 10' adapted to receive the removable pintle 11. Adapted to be secured to the window-sash 2 by means of screws 12 is a comparatively small hinge leaf section 13 provided on its inner edge with a knuckle 14:. This leaf is just sufliciently large to snugly fit the cutaway portion 8 of the leaf 5 and the inner edge of the leaf 13 is beveled to fit the bevel 9.
In operation, when it is desired to place the sash in position, it is accomplished by first securing the leaf 4; to the main casing Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 1, 1916.
Serial No. 72,938.
A by means of screw 15, and then securing the small leaf section 13 to the windowsash. The parts are now ready to be assembled and this is accomplished by placing the sash in a position where the leaf 13 will enter the cutaway portion 8 of the leaf 5. It is now only necessary to insert the pintle 11 through the alined hinged sections 10 and the interposed hinge 14:. The window may now be closed to assume the position shown in Fig. 2 and may be opened in the usual manner about the hinge 3. The beveled edges indicated at 9 formed between the leaf sections 5 and 13 produces an interlock between said leaf sections which prevents movement of one with relation to the other. The leaf sections 5 and 13, when the sash is in position, will thus act as a single leaf of a hinge and will therefore permit the sash to be swung about the hinge 3 similar to an ordinary hinge. If it is desired to convenient point for window washing or for any other purpose.
A hinge constructed as here shown, is simple and substantial of construction, it permits the use of a fixed pintle 7 on the eXterior side of the window and a removable pintle on the interior side. The hinge is in this manner burglar-proof and at the same time provides a means whereby the sash may be removed at any time without unscrewing any of the hinge or leaf sections or otherwise marring the sash or casing.
The materials and finish of the several parts of the hinge may be such as the judgment and experience of the manufacturer may dictate.
I wish it understood that various changes in form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims'and that I do not wish to limit myself to the specific design and construction here shown.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A detachable hinge comprising a pair of hingedly connected leaf sections, one of said leaves having a pocket formed therein to receive a removable leaf and the other leaf being adapted to be secured to a support, means forsecuring the removable leaf to a member to be supported, and means for securing the removable leaf in the pocket of the first named leaf.
2. A detachable hinge comprising a pair of hingedly connected leaf sections, one of said leaves having its central portion cut away as described to form an inner beveled edge and pocket for the reception of a removable leaf section, a beveled edge on one side of the removable leaf adapted to interlock with the first named beveled edge, a hinge on the opposite side of the removable leaf, a pair of alined hinge members on the first named leaf with which the removable leaf hinge is adapted to register, and a pintle adapted to be inserted through the said.
alined hinge members to secure the remow able leaf, or adapted to be removed to release the removable leaf.
3. The combination with a hinge having one leaf out out to form a pocket therein, of a removable leaf insertible in said pocket and adapted to assume a position where tl e top and bottom surfaces of the leaves lie parallel and means for securing the insertible leaf against removal, said means comprising a removable pintle adapted to be inserted through one end of the cut out leaf and the insertible leaf.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
