DETAOHABLE HINGE.
No 563,680. Patented'July 7, 1896.
m: mums PEYzns co. womuma, WASNINGYO UNITED STATES MARY \V. NOIT, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
DETACHABLE HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 563,680, dated July 7', 1896. Application filed April 17, 1896. Serial No. 587,987. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARY V. NOTT. a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, county of l-Ienrico, State of Virginia, (temporarily residing at Nokesville, in the county of Prince \Viliiam and State of Virginia,) have invented new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a hinge, and has for its object to provide an easily-detachable hinge adapted more particularly for use with inside window shutters or blinds for the purpose of permitting the shutters to be readily taken off for dusting or renovating without disturbing or soiling the shades, curtains, or window-drapery. It is usually very annoying to housekeepers to have the cleaning of inside shutters attended to while hanging in place, owing to the risk of injury to curtains, carpets, and furniture. An easily-detachable hinge, that can be disconnected without requiring the withdrawal of screws, will afford a great convenience in facilitatingthe removal of inside blinds or shutters, whether for cleaning the same or for any other purpose.
Although especially designed as an improvement in hinges for inside blinds, the detachable connection that I have devised may be also applied to advantage in hinges intended for other uses.
My invention consists in a hinge having the features of construction and novel combinations of parts as hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
In the annexed drawings, illustrating the inventiomFigiu-e 1 is a perspective view showing part of a window jamb or frame with in side blind hung in position by means of my improved detachable hinge. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the inside blind detached with hinge thereon, the attaching-plate being left permanently in position on the jamb or window-frame.
By reference to the drawings, it will be seen that the numeral 1 designates a portion of a window frame or jamb.
The numeral '2 indicates a portion of an inside shutter.
any suitable or convenient manner. The other hinge leaf or plate 5 is attached to the plate or leaf 3 by means of knuckles 6 and 7 on the respective parts, connected by a pivot, as usual.
In the hinge-leaf 5 there is formed, at or about the leaf center, a narrow verticallyelongated slot 8,to fit over and permit the passage of a vertically-extended tubular projection 9, formed on the outer side of an attaching-plate 10, that is permanently secured by screws 11, or otherwise, to the jamb or window-frame.
The hinge-leaf 5 is adapted to fit closely upon or against the attaching-plate 10, substantially covering the same, and is held securely in place by means of two removable pins 12 and 13, one of which, as the pin 12, is inserted in the tubular projection 9 of the attaching-plate 10 after said tubular projection has been engaged with the slot 8 of the hinge. The other removable pin, 13,is inserted into and has a locking engagement with tubular projections or knuckles 1e and 15, formed, respectively, on the coinciding edges of the hinge-leaf 5 and attaching-plate 10, as shown.
Although the drawings show the tubular projection 14: as being on the hinge-leaf 5, and the two corresponding tubular projections 15 as being on the attach ing-plate 10, it is obvious that this arrangement may be reversed without affecting the invention. The two pins 12 and 13 are each provided at one end with a ring 16, to facilitate their insertion and removal. These pins should each fit sufliciently tight to hold the plates 5 and 10 closely together, one upon the other, so that there will be no looseness or swaying of the hinge attachment.
Instead of securing one leaf of the hinge perinanently to the shutter or swinging part and detachably connecting the other hinge-leaf to the window-frame or stationary part, it will be apparent that a reverse arrangement might be adopted; but I prefer the construction shown, for its greater convenience and ease of adjustment.
Though but one hinge is shown in the draw in gs, there will be either two or three applied to each inside shutter, and in other situations there may be employed as many as are necessary. As a means for detachably hinging various structures, such as light gates or doors, lids, covers, or other closures, this detachable hinge connection is adapted to a large range of uses. The hinge and its attaching parts may be made from any suitable metal and in any sizes required by the purposes for which it is to be employed.
If it is desired to take on? the shutters for any purpose, it is only necessary to Withdraw the pins 12 and 13, and the shutters can thus be removed, cleansed, and replaced Without disturbing the curtains or subjecting them to any risk of injury.
\Vhar I claim as my invention is- 1. The combination With a hinge having one leaf provided with a slot, of an attaching-plate having thereon a tubular projection adapted to pass through and engage in said slot, and a removable pin inserted in said tubular projection to detachably connect the said hinge and attaching-plate, substantially as described.
The combin ation with a hinge having one leaf provided With a slot and With a tubular projection or knuckle on the free edge of said leaf, of an attaching-plate having thereon a tubular projection adapted to pass through and engage in said slot and having on one edge of said attaching-plate tubular projections or knuckles coinciding with the corresponding nesses.
