INVALIDS BED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 25, 1916.
Application filed December 4, 1915. Serial No. 65,088.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS J. KUHN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Latrobe, in the county of VVestmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Invalids Beds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in beds for invalids, the object of the invention being to provide an improved bed of this character which may be readily folded, which provides an opening for the relief of a bed sore andfor other purposes, which is highly sanitary, which may be readily kept clean, and which is extremely comfortable to the patient and greatly reduces the labor of nursing the patient.
The invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of devices, hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of an invalid bed constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same showing the bed in extended position for use, in full lines, and in folded position in dotted lines.
The frame 1 of the bed comprises members 2 and 3 which are connected together by hinges 4; so that one member may be folded on the other as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The bottom of the frame is composed of longitudinally arranged slats 5 which are properly spaced apart and the ends 6 and. sides 7 of the frame are made of boards as here shown.
The top 8 of the bed is composed of longitudinally and transversely arranged and interwoven strips 9 of suitable fabric, such, for instance, as strong duck or webbing, or the like, and over the top is a cover 10 which is also made of suitable fabric, such as duck or webbing. The top and cover are stitched together and their ends and sides are secured on the outer sides of the ends and sides of the frame by means of moldings 11 which moldings are secured by nails or screws on the frame and form the upper guides for doors 12, the sides 7 of the frame having openings 13 to enable a vessel or the like to be placed in the bed or removed therefrom, said doors being slidable and the frame being provided with lower guides 13 for the doors. L-shaped corner braces 14 are provided which are secured in the angles Copies of this patent may be obtained for between the bottom, sides and ends and also in the angles between the sides and ends of the frame, as shown. When the bed is in extended position for use, its members are secured together by suitable hooks 15.
An opening 16 is made in the top of the bed for the relief of a bed sore and for other purposes, and the top is provided with a square of rubber or Cantfield sheeting as at 16 around the opening. The opening is bound with tape as at 17.
The bed is preferably used on top of a mattress, springs or bed slats and is extremely comfortable to a patient and when the patient has a bed sore and the opening is arranged below the sore, pressure on the latter is avoided and the sore is permitted to rapidly heal. A comforter made of cheese cloth or the like and with an opening therein to register with that in the bed top may also be used to increase the comfort of the bed and such comforter can be readily cleaned. The bed can be vused either with or without the comforter.
Owing to the construction of the frame of the bed and the provision of the openings in the sides of the bed frame, the bed is thoroughly aired and ventilated, thus greatly permitting the comfort and assisting in the treatment of the patient. 7
Having described the invention, what is claimed is:
A bed of the class described comprising a frame consisting of a pair of members, hinges connecting said frame members together so that one frame member may be folded on the other, a fabric covering on the upper side of said frame, the ends of the cover or top of the bed being arranged on the outer sides of the sides and ends of the frame, moldings secured on the sides and ends of the frame and securing the cover or top in place and also forming guides, the sides of the frame members having openings and being also provided with lower guides, and sliding doors to open and close said openings and operate in said guide moldings and lower guides.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LOUIS J. KUHN.
