MATTRESS..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 666,458, dated January 22, 1901.
Application filed June'25. 1900. Serial No. 21,499. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, ANDREAS BATI, veterinary surgeon, a citizen of the Empire of Austria-I-Iungary, and a resident of Foca, Bosnia, Austria-Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mattresses, of which the following is a speciiication.
The object of this invention is a mattress for children and sick people, and it serves to prevent the bedclothes from remaining Wet for a long time.
Of the accompanying drawings, Figure l gives a view of the mattress from above, and Fig. 2 a view from below. Fig. 3 shows the frame designed to carry same. Fig. 4 is a transverse section through the mattress; and Fig. 5 is an enlarged view of some of the d rain-tu bes, while in Figs. 6 and 7 means are shown for holding the bed cover or quilt in position.
The mattress a is filled with horsehair or seaweed or any other elastic material used in general for this purpose, while the cover of the mattress may consist of any kind of strong and water-tight woven fabrics. As the mattress is resting only on its edges,the under side of the cover has to be made of an eXtra-stron g material, such as sail-cloth impregnated with caoutchouc. A hollow seam Z) serves to receive the frame c, formed of metal tubes. To effect a continual tightening of the mattress-cover, the frame c may consist of four parts, which are connected with each other by means of spring-governed rods CZ, tending to enlarge the distance between the single parts of the frame. The middle of the mattress is pierced by a number of drain-tubes f, made of indiarubber or any other material, which may consist of narrow tubes connecting the upper and the under side of the mattress-cover. To obviate the possibility of undue pressure being exerted upon the body of the person lying on the mattress, the drain-tubesf may be formed of two telescoping parts g and h, or the two parts may be screwed together and the lower end be made to glide in the mattress-body whenever the latter is compressed by the weight of the body, and its lower end will then project below the under side of the mattress, as shown in Fig. 5, the left-hand tube showing the last-mentioned form, while the two other tubes represent the telescoping arrangement.
Below the drained part of the mattress a water-tight receptacle is arranged to receive the moisture from the drains, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. A piece of water-tight canvas t' may be fastened by aid of an elastic string to an oval or circular elastic rail k, fixed to the under side of the mattress. The receptacle c' is pierced by a hole Zin the middle and connected, by means of a rubber tube m, with a vessel n, fastened to the bedstead. This is done to obviate the entrance of cold air through the hole Z and the drain-tubes f. If, on the contrary, ventilation of the body of the person lying on the mattress is required` the rubber tube may be removed and the moisture contained in the canvas receptacle t' be collected in an open vessel placed under the hole Z.
The mattress maybe used with or Without I a bedcloth of permeable linen.
To prevent the quilt covering the body of the person lying on the mattress from getting in between the body and the mattress, and thus obstructing the drain tubes, elastic strapso are arranged on the sides of the mat-- tress, which by aid of carabine-swivels p and of ears fr on the quilt hold the latter in position.
Having thus fully described the nature of my invention, what I claim is- In a mattress the combination of a watertight mattress-cover, a rectangular elastic frame secured to said cover, drain -tubes loosely connecting the upper and the lower sides of said cover, a circular rail fastened to the lower side of the cover, a sheet of Watertight material secured to said rail, a collecting-vessel, a rubber tube connecting said vessel with said sheet, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ANDREAS RATI.
Witnesses HENRY HASPER, WQLDEMAR HAUPT.
