Abstract

The present invention relates to an inflatable anti-bedsore mattress, comprising two sheets of flexible material welded together along weld lines, in order to delimit individual air sack whose internal chambers can be connected with a compressed gas source. This mattress is characterised in that the upper sheet of the mattress which is in contact with the body of a bedridden patient is made from a material which is impermeable to liquids and bacteria, but highly permeable to water vapour, the water vapour which penetrates the mattress being removed through the pump which alternately inflates the air sac forming the mattress.

Description

The present invention relates to an anti-decubitus inflatable mattress with alternately inflated tubes.

It is well known that in bedridden patients, the compression that results from weighing the body can lead to the production of often serious bedsores. Consequently, efforts have always been made to prevent the appearance of these bedsores, and various techniques have been used for this purpose. As soon as the first redness announcing bedsores appears, an appropriate treatment is often applied, consisting of very careful and very costly treatments, possibly associated with the use of a fluidized bed. During this development, the patient is exposed to infectious complications which are often fatal, although at the start he only has a minor wound.

To prevent, as much as possible, the appearance of pressure sores on people who have to stay in bed for a prolonged period, several techniques are currently used, namely the inflatable mattress known as "alternating", with water mattresses. and the foam mattress. These techniques are essentially aimed at combating the harmful effects of excessively localized and prolonged pressure in one place on the body, which interferes with blood supply and the oxygenation of tissues and constitutes the starting point for pressure ulcers.

Among the aforementioned techniques, the "alternating" mattress is the one whose manipulation is the easiest, while allowing a periodic change of the zone through which the body of a bedridden patient is in contact with the mattress. Such a mattress is described, for example, in US Pat. No. 4,267,611. This mattress has an upper sheet pierced with a network of holes sufficiently small to prevent the flow of any fluid from the outside towards inside the strands of the mattress, but large enough to allow air to escape from inside the strands. Such a mattress, if it allows a certain ventilation of the lower part of the body of a bedridden patient, is however not completely satisfactory with regard to maintaining the body of the patient in optimal conditions avoiding the appearance squares.

The present invention relates to improvements made to an inflatable mattress alternately of this type in order to eliminate perspiration and urine which are significant factors in the appearance of bedsores and their development.

For this purpose this anti-decubitus inflatable mattress, with alternately inflatable tubes comprising two sheets of flexible material welded to each other the lony of weld lines to delimit the individual tubes whose internal crambe can be placed in communication with a pump for the alternative inflation of the tubes, is characterized in that the upper sheet of the mattress which is in contact with the body of a bedridden patient, is made of a material impermeable to liquids and bacteria but highly permeable to vapor water.

One can advantageously use, to constitute the upper sheet of the mattress, a material known under the name of "CORTEX which is used in various sectors, in particular for clothes, raincoats, shoes.

A mattress according to the invention has the advantage that a continuous flow of water vapor penetrates inside the mattress through the "GORETEX" sheet and is evacuated to the outside by the pump serving alternating inflation of the mattress tubes. Indeed, the partial pressure in water vapor of the saturated and hot air in contact with the patient remains higher than the partial pressure in water vapor inside the mattress, even if the total pressure inside of the mattress is itself greater than the ambient pressure. This flow of water vapor, which is uniformly distributed under the patient, ensures instant evaporation of sweat, which results in the patient's skin remaining permanently dry, which helps prevent the appearance of pressure sores as well as the reveal clinical trials for a material whose permeability to water vapor is greater than 800Ug / m2 / 24h according to the international standard (UK / SC / 4778 standards adopted by DIN 86 and soon to be extended to the European area).

According to an additional characteristic of the invention, perforations are provided in the weld zones between the upper and lower sheets of the mattress. This allows, in the case of incontinent bedridden patients, the urine to flow under the mattress where it can be collected and accumulate in an absorbent material changed several times a day. Thus the patient is permanently dry since the residual moisture from the urine is quickly evaporated by the flow of steam from the other side of the top sheet of the mattress.
