BENJAMIN F. FARRAR, OF SAN FRANCISCO, GALIFORXIA.
FOLDING BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,083, dated June l Application filed March I, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. Fnnnnn, of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Folding Beds 5 and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in folding beds; and it consists of a sectional mattress or bed, the sections of which are hinged together at their meeting ends, of suitable legs for supporting the foot and sides of the mattress, and a swinging leg for supporting its head, and of a peculiar arrangement of rollers or casters at the head and foot to carry the ends of the mattress-sections in turning from one position to another, and to support them when folded, all of which I shall hereinafter fully explain.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and easily-handled bed adapted to be folded up out of the way or opened when necessary without any trouble.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my bed, showing it opened. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of same, showing it closed. Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the cover in section and the head-leg E folded up, a portion of the device being broken away to show the said leg.
A is the mattress or bed between, composed of suitable material-such as slats, ticking, and intervening springs or packing. This mattress is made in sections by a central transverse division, the sections being united by hingesa, which show in Fig. 2, and which, when the sections are in the position shown in Fig. 1, are secured to the lower edges of the meeting ends of the sections, whereby the thickness of the mattress serves as an abutment-j oint.
The foot of the mattress is supported on legs B, having casters I), said legs being screwed rigidly to the end of the foot-section.
The center of the mattress is supported by legs O, screwed rigidly to the sides of the footsection near the line of joint with the headsection. D are similar legs, screwed rigidly to the sides of the head-section about on a middle transverse line, and E is a leg at the in Fig. 1. All the legs are provided with casters.
Screwed to the sides of the lower end of the mattress are plates G, having casters 9, and screwed to the sides of the upper end of the mattress are plates H, the outer faces of which are curved on the are of circles of which the lower ends of legs D form points. These curved faces are provided with a number of casters, h.,
Hinged to the head-bar F is the head-board I, having a hand-hole, i, and secured by the flexible straps J.
Upon the sides of one section of the mattress is a hook, K, and upon the side of the other section is an eye, It, with which the hook engages when the bed is folded.
Upon the end of the head-board is an eye Z, with which a hook, L, on the inner face 0. plate H engages to secure the head-board, as shown in Fig. 2. i
The operation of folding the bed is as follows: The pivoted head-leg E is turned up to the head-bar, and the head-board is grasped and forced down. By this movement the centrally-hinged mattress bends upward at its joint, turning on legs 13 until the lower ends of the curved plates H strike the floor. Then a pushing force on the head-board carries the head-section, running on the curved wheeled faces of the plates H, toward the foot-section, which by this movement is forced toward a vertical position until when the head-section reaches it both have assumed a vertical position, one resting on its wheeled plates G and the other on the last casters of plates H. This is the position shown in Fig. 2, the legs in Fig. 1 being now all turned to a horizontal position, while the plates G H serve as legs for the folded bed.- The curvature of the plates H provides for this movement of the bed in closing, as they gradually turn on the floor and bring each of their casters into position to continue the movement until the last one serves, as in Fig. 2, for the support. The hooks K are then thrown into the eyes It, and the head-board is secured by the hook L and e e Z.
To open the bed, the hooks L K are released and the head-board pulled on to draw the head-section of the mattress away. The continuation of this movement turns the legs down to a vertical position; and raises the mattress fromits plates. The leg E is turned down, and the bed is as shown in Fig. 1.
When closed, the bed is intended to fit some kind of easing or to be otherwise covered. I have for this purpose the cover M and drapery N hanging from it, as shown in Fig. 3.
The space between the cover and the ends of the mattress serves as a receptacle for the bed-clothes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v v 1. In a folding bed, a sectional mattress or bed, the sections of which are hinged together at their meeting ends, in combination with suitable anti-friction rollers or casters at the foot of the mattress,to furnish a bearing upon which said foot turns, and. suitable anti-friction rollers or casters at the head of the mattress, arranged in an are or curve, and upon which the head of the mattress turns,substantiall-y as herein described.
2. In a folding bed, the sectional mattress or bed A, hinged transversely, in combination with the rigid legs B at the foot, having casters b, and the plates H at the head, having casters h, substantially as herein described.
3. In a folding bed, the sectional mattress or bed A, hinged transversely, in combination with the rigid legs B at the foot, having casters 6, the pivoted leg Eat the head, and the plates H at the sides of the head, said plates having curved faces with casters h, substantially as herein described.
4-. In a folding bed, the sectional mattress or bed A, hinged transversely, in combination with the legs B at the foot, having casters 1),
the plates G at the sides of th'e foot, and having casters 9, and the plates H at the sides of 0 the head, having curved faces with casters h, substantially as herein described.
5. In a folding bed, the sectional mattress or bed A, hinged transversely, and the headboard I, hinged to said mattress, in combina tion with the legs 13 and the plates G at the foot, and having suitable casters, and plates H 7. In a folding bed, the sectional mattress or bed A, hinged transversely, and the footlegs B, side legs, 0 D, and head-leg E, in combination with the plates G at the foot, having I casters 5/, and the plates H at the head, having curved faces, and casters 12, substantially as herein described.
In witness W116i eof I have hereunto set my hand.
BENJAMIN F. FARRAR.
