HEAD-REST.
Specication of Letters Patent.
f Patented Aug. 9, 1910.
Application led September 18, 1907. Serial No. 393,509.
Be it known thatl I, JAMES H. AKIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wichita, in lthe count of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have Invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Head-Rests, of
which the following is a specification.
AMy invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a head rest and back supporter ada ted to be used with any bed or cot of we 7known construction.
It has for its ob'ect the provision of a rest and support, sim e in construction and neat in appearance, w ich may be left in the bed lwhp not in use as a prop for the head and It is of particularadvantage in giving invalids their medicine or meals..
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is 'a view showing thee-rest in adjusted position within the bed. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the` rest in adjusted position. Fig.v 3 is a View showing the specic construction `of the frame at the point hinged, and the arch shaped horizontal or transverse brace. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the invention, and Fi 5 is a detailed view.
represents the main supportin frame, the side bars of which-are rovidged with ratchets B. The head rest is hinged to the main frame at D, and isheld in its variousadjusted positions b means of the brace E, wluch is pivoted at A' F, is a transverse brace-attached to the sides ofthe frame and is rovided on each end with a block G. of t e shape shown. This forms an arch shaped brace adapted to conform to the hips or back which materially vadds to the comfort of the patient while either in a propped position or while lying flat.
H, represents a block attached to G, and ils adaptd to take the side 'strain from the represents atab attached to the end of rthe side bars ofthe 'amev for the pu all times.
the head rest for raisingor lowering the same. An inclined block K, is attached` to aid'in in placing the rest within the ed. Y
A ead rest and back supporter of the class described is of particular value in view of the fact that it may be left in the bed at The arch shaped `brace vbeing formed of a very thin strip F, reinforced by the block G, allows for the slight stretching` vof the'covering, which may be of any material, so that the hips and back do not come in contact with the brace.
One of the great disadvantages lof the head rests now on the market lies in the fact that they cannot be left in the bed at all times but must be removed when the patient wishes to lie flat. This is caused b y the great y number of braces used, land the fact that none of them are shaped to conform to the shape of the body.
Another feature of my invention which is of particular value is the block H, which forms a brace for the hinges against side movement and in this way takes a great deal of unnecessary strain from the hinges and prolongs the usefulness of the same.
Having now fully described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l A bed support having a frame, an adjustable supporting frame hinged thereto, means for supporting said frame, an arched shaped brace secured to the frame, said brace consisting of a thin stri provided with reinforcin blocks at eac end, and blocks connecte to said reinforci blocks to form braces for the hinges agamst side movement.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses. JAMES II.AKIN.
