To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN DREWRY WrL- LIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lewisville, in the county of F orsyth and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Operating-Table, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in operating-tables.

The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of operating-tables and to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient foldable emergency operating-table designed particularly for country practice and adapted for the performance of minor surgical operations and for administering vaginal douches and the like and capable of being conveniently carried under the seat of an ordinary buggy and of being readily set up for use.

A further object of the invention is to provide an operating-table of this character adapted to be readily introduced in a partially-folded condition beneath a patientin bed and capable of enabling patients to be conveniently handled in moving them from one bed to another and in carrying them to ambulances.

Also the invention has for its object to provide an operating-table to permit a patient to lie in a comfortable position and capable of affording a restfor the limbs, and thereby relieving the latter of strain.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of an operating-table constructed in accordance with this invention and shown arranged for use. Fig. 2 is a reverse plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view, the operating-table being folded. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially on line 4 4 of Fig.2. 1' designates a central section, and 2 desi nates side leaves of a foldable operating-tab e designed particularly for country practice and adapted to be compactly arranged to enable it to be conveniently carried beneath the seat of a buggy or other vehicle. The side leaves 2 extend longitudinally of the operating-table throughout the entire length of the central section 1 to provide a table of the de-' sired width, and the inner longitudinal edges of the said side leaves 2 are connected with the longitudinal side edges of the central section 1 by means of suitable hinges 3, having their pintles located at the lower face of the central section, whereby the side leaves are adapted'to fold beneath the central section, as 0 early illustratedin Figs. 3, 5, and 6 of the drawings. The side leaves are preferably'a little less than one-half the width of the central section in order to provide an intervening spacebetween their proximate edges when the parts are folded, such intervening space being provided for the reception of the means hereinafter described for securing the leaves in their extended position. The side leaves have their lower portions 4 extended at the foot of the table beyond the adjacent end ofthe :centrahsection to form-leg-supports and to provide an intervening recess for affording access to the patient. The outer ends of the extended portions 4 are provided with hee1-rests 5 ,consisting of openings having straight transverse edges at their outer ends and having their inner ends 6 rounded and-beveled to present smooth surfaces to the patient. The-edge 6" of the intermediate section at the foot of the table is concavely curved or recessed to extend the intervening space or recess between the supporting portions of the side leaves 4 and to afiord greater access to the patient. The hinged edge 10 of the head-rest is beveled to fit the l bevel of the intermediate section and to set the head-rest at a slight inclination, as l clearly shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5 of the i drawings. The beveled edges of the intermediate section and the head-rest form abut' l ting faces and limit the outward swing of the head-rest when the table is in use. The l head-rest is foldable upon the upper face of the intermediate section, and as the side leaves fold beneath the same the head-rest 1 and the side leaves do not interfere with each other in folding.

The side leaves are held in their extended position by means of combined locking and i lifting bars or rods 11 and 12, arranged in l pairs and extending transversely of the operating-table at the lower face thereof, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings,when The inner ends of the rods 11 and 12 are provided with pivots 13 l and 14, which are arranged in suitable openings of metal plates 15 and 16, which are secured to the lower faces of the intermediate section, whereby the bars or rods 11 and 12 are pivotally connected with the same. The leaves are preferably constructed of wood, and the metallic plates 15 and 16 are secured to the intermediate leaf in suitable recesses thereof by means of screws or other suitable i fastening devices. The pivots of the rods 1 have their inner or upper ends bent at an ani gle or provided with other means for engaging the inner attachment-plates 15 and 16, whereby they are retained in the perforations of the same. The combined locking and lift- 1 ing rods when arranged transversely of the operatin table engage the lower faces of; the side eaves and retain the latter in their extended or unfolded position, and the said i side leaves are provided adjacent to their outer edges with resilient clamps or clips 17, I mounted on the lower faces of the side leaves and having curved jaws for engaging the outer portions of the said rods or bars 11, whereby the latter are maintained in their locking position. The hinges are provided with recesses 18 to receive the rods or bars for enabling the same to fit closely against the lower faces of the intermediate section and the side leaves of the operating-table. The outer ends of the rods or bars extend beyond the outer side edges of the leaves 2 and are provided with openin s or eyes 19, into which are linked handho ds 20, preferably consisting of loops of leather or other suitor grip may be provided for enabling the operating table to be conveniently carried. The clips or clamps are provided with suit able shanks 21, which are embedded in the side leaves; but they may be secured in any other suitable manner.

The bars or rods 11 are adapted to fold or swing inwardly from the position shown in full lines .in Fig. 2 of the drawin s to that illustrated in dotted lines in said gure, and when the bars or rods are arranged longitudinally of the lower faces of the intermediate section the side leaves are adapted to be I folded downwardly and inwardly at opposite sides of the said bars or rods. The intermediate leaf is provided adjacent to its center with spaced clips or clamps 22, each provided with a pair of outwardly-bowed jaws and a central tongue 23, dividing the space between the jaws and adapted to hold the rods 'in the curved or body portion of the same, whereby the rods or bars are retained in engagement with the clips or clamps. The operating-table is adapted to be introduced beneath a patient with the inner side leaf folded, and after the patient has been placed upon the intermediate leaf the table may be lifted and the said side leaves unfolded. It is adapted to be placed upon a bed, and it may be arranged on a bench or upon logs or any other support, and it may be compactly folded when not in use.

The metallic attachment-plates are provided with recesses 24, into which the side clips or clamps extend when the parts are folded.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A foldable operating-table comprising an intermediate section, side leaves hinged at their side edges to the said section at the side edges thereof and foldable against one of the faces of the same, and a head-rest hinged to the intermediate section and foldable against the opposite face of the same.

2. A foldable operating-table comprising an intermediate section, and side leaves having their inner longitudinal edges hinged to the said section at the sides thereof, and extending beyond the same at one end thereof to form leg-supports and to provide an intervening recess.

3. A foldable operating-table comprising an intermediate section, side leaves having their inner longitudinal edges hinged to the said section at the sides thereof, and extending beyond the same at one end thereof to form leg-supports and to provide an intervening space, said leg-supports being provided at their outer ends with heel-rests.

5. A table of the class described, comprising an intermediate section recessed at the foot of the table and presenting a concavelycurved edge, and side leaves extending lonwhen the latter are folded.

An operating-table comprising an in termediate section, side leaves hinged at their inner longitudinal edges to the intermediate section and foldable on the same, said side leaves when folded terminating short of each other to provide an intervening space, and combined locking and lifting bars mounted on the intermediate section and extending beyond the same to engage the side leaves, and provided at the outer edges thereof with handles or grips, said bars being foldable on the intermediate section and lying within the intervening space between the side leaves when the latter are folded.

9. A foldable operating-table comprising an intermediate section, and side leaves hinged at their inner longitudinal edges-to the said section at'the sides thereof and arranged and held in the same horizontal plane therewith when in use, and foldable against one of the faces of the said intermediate section when not in use, said side leaves providing both leg-supports and heel-rests.

10. A foldable operating-table comprising an intermediate section, side leaves hinged to the intermediate section, locking-bars pivoted to the intermediate section and adapted to be arranged either longitudinally ortransversely thereof, side clips mounted on the said leaves for holding the locking-bars in their transverse position, and a central clip carried by the intermediate section and composed of opposite jaws, and an intermediate tongue and adapted to retain the said bars in their longitudinal position.

11. A foldable operating-table comprising an intermediate section, side leaves hinged to the intermediate section, a plate mounted on the intermediate section and having opposite recesses, locking-bars connected with the plate between the recesses, and clips carried by the leaves for holding the locking-bars in engagement with the same, said clips being arranged to fit into the recesses when the leaves are folded.

12. A foldable operating-table comprising an intermediate section, locking-bars con nected with the intermediate section, and foldable on the same, said locking-bars being extended beyond the side leaves to retain the latter in their unfolded position, the outer ends of the locking-bars being provided with eyes, and handle-loops linked into the eyes of the locking-bars.
