To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, IVILLIAM E. DUN- niuo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alliance, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Holders for Writing or Manifolding Pads, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to holders or supports for pads, books, manifolding books, and adapted to protect the pads or books and to facilitate writing therein.

For the purpose of illustration, I have, in the accompanying drawings, shown and herein described one form of pad holder embodying my invention.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pad holder, with a pad mounted thereon embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the supporting member of the cover in position for use in making entries on the pad. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the holder and pad, showing some of the sheets of the pad thrown back and held by the cover members. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of my holder and a pad thereon illustrating the manner of using them.

In the drawings, 1 indicates a pad, which may be formed in any suitable manner and consists of a series of original slips, or sets of original and manifolding slips, each printed and ruled in any manner desired. The slips of the pad are preferably bound along one end by suitable staples.

2 indicates as an entirety a holder for the pad. It may comprise a plate 2 substantially the same size as the pad to be mounted on the holder, an end plate 2 which serves as an abutment for the upper edge of the pad so as to readily position the pad, and one or more pad engaging devices 2 for securing the pad to the back 2. The pad engaging devices 2 may be similar in construction and operation to the pad engaging arms disclosed in my Patent No. 969,775, dated Sept. 13, 1910.

termed the hand supporting member of the rest. It is formed of relatively stiff material, such as heavy card board tablet. The member 3 may be termed the adjusting member for the support 3". It is formed of a sheet of flexible material so that it may be doubled on itself at any point on a transverse line to permit the adjustability of the support 3" in an endwise direction away from the back 2. The adjusting member 3, is preferably connected to the lower edge or end of the back 2 along that end opposite to the end connected with the support 8 Its flexibility permits the support 3 to be swung or doubled back on the adjusting member 3 As shown in Fig. 1 the members 3, 3 may be arranged as and form a cover for the pad when the pad is not in use, the member 3 protecting the back 2 and the member 3* resting on and protecting the face of the pad. For this purpose the flexible member 3 is made long enough to fold over or around the upper end of the holder 2, thus permitting the member 3 to lie flat on top of the pad.

In the operation of my hand rest, it will be'seen that the adjusting member 3 is folded against the rear face of the back 2 and that the support 3* is folded in a reverse direction against the underside of the member 3 as shown in Fig. 8. In case some of the slips of the pad have been entered or filled in, they may be folded back with their free edges between the back 2 and adjusting member 3 and temporarily held thereby. As the exposed slip is filled in, the support 3* may be moved or extended outwardly beyond the lower end of the back, as shown in Fig. 2,'and form a support or rest for the hand of the person filling in the slip. On account of the flexibility of the adjusting member, it can be folded back on itself along a transverse line at any point in its length and thus permits the support 3 to be extended a greater or less degree, as desired, whereby every line including the last line of each slip can be carefully, accurately and easily written on.

When the support 3 is extended to serve as a hand rest, it will be noted that a portion of its surface bears firmly against the back 105 2 to which it is firmly held by one hand of the operator. In this position it forms a continuation of the back 2? and thus operates as a firm and steady support for the hand.

It will thus be seen that the members 3 3 cooperate to form an extension, rest or support which permits entries to be made in a legible and convenient manner on the lowermost portions of the slips. The members 3 3 may also operate to hold the free edges of the filled in slips when folded back out of the way, and to cover the pad when the latter is not in use. Since the adjustment is flexible from end to end, it permits the support to be extended to any desired degree and to be adjusted by an endwise movement to a greater extent as the operator continues to get closer and closer to the last line of the slip. Such construction also produces a connection for the support which is durable and easily operated.

To those skilled in the art of making pad holders of the class described, many alterations in construction and widely differing embodiments and applications of my invention will suggest themselves, without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. My disclosures and the description herein are purely illustrative, and are not intended to be in any sense limiting.

That I claim is:-

1'. A holder for manifolding pads comprising a back plate, means for securing a pad at one end of said back plate, a hand tablet, and a flexible sheet connecting the other end of the back plate with one end of the hand tablet, whereby the tablet may be moved endwise relative to the back plate.

2. A holder for manifolding pads comprising a back plate, means for securing a pad at one end of said back plate, a hand tablet, and a flexible sheet of greaterlength than the back plate connecting one end of the hand tablet with the other end of the back plate.

A holder for manifolding pads comprising a back plate, means for securing a pad at one end ofsaid back plate, a hand tablet, a flexible sheet connected to the other end of the back plate and to one end of the hand tablet, said sheet being foldable on transverse lines to permit the extension of the hand tablet in an endwise direction relative to the back plate. a

4. A holder for manifolding pads comprising a back plate, means for securing a pad at one end of said back plate, a tablet forming a hand rest or a cover for said pad, and a flexible sheet connected to the other end of the back plate and to one end of the tablet, said sheet being of greater length than the back plate and being foldable on transverse lines to permit the tablet to lie flat against the back plate, to be moved endwise relative thereto, or to be folded around the secured end of the pad and lie flat against the upper side thereof.
