To all whom it may concern i Be it known that I, lVILLIAM E. DUNNING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alliance, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Manifolding Books or Pads, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to manifolding books or pads wherein one or more copies of a written record may be simultaneously made. I

For the purpose of illustration, 1 have, in the accompanying drawings, shown, and ierein described one form of manifolding book or pad embodying my invention.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a manifolding book or pad embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the book with thetop cover section and auxiliary set of leaves thrown back, the top cover section and auxiliary set of leaves being broken away. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 with the intermediate stop card in position to receive a record when it is desired to make duplicate or'triplicate copies thereof. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the book with the stop card in operative posi tion on the main pad, showing the top cover section and auxiliary set of leaves thrown back and broken away. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a folded sheet removed from the book or pad.

In the drawings, 1 indicates a main pad or set of slips and 2 indicates an auxiliary pad or set of slips normally arranged on top of the set of slips 1 when the book or pad is not in use (see Fig. 1).

3 indicates a base or bottom preferably formed of relatively heavy or stiff paper or other suitable material so as to form a frame or body for the book or pad. The auxiliary set of slips issecured at its upper end, preferably by staples 4, to the upper end of the base or bottom 3. The material forming the base or bottom'is preferably extended or continued around the upper end of the auxiliary set of slips 2 to form a top cover section 5 for the book or pad. The cover section 5 is preferably bound to the upper side of the auxiliary set of slips 2, as shown at 4*. At the opposite or lower end of the base or bottom'3, the material thereof may also be extended or continued to form a stop card 6. The extended portion of the material is suitably scored on transverse lines 6, 6", in order that the stop member may be swung into and out of position between adjoining sets of slips from time to time, as will be later described.

The supplemental base 7 is preferably folded on a transverse line 7 to form an upper member 7 anda lower member 7?, the'line of fold serving as a hinge for the upper member T, The lower member preferably coincides in length and width with the bottom member 3 and lies between the upper end of the auxiliary set of slips 2 and the base 3, to which the base 7 is preferably secured by the staples 4. As will be readily understood from the drawings the upper member 7 for .is a back for the main set of slips 1, the slips of said set being secured together at their upper ends and to the free end of the upper base member 7 a in a Well known manner, for instance, by staples 8. The base member 7 is preferably extended and bent over and around the upper end of the main set of slips 1, as shown at 7, the free edge of the extended portion 7 being secured to the upper side of the set of slips 1 by the staples 8.

The main set of slips 1v comprises a plurality of sheets of paper, 1', each of which is folded on a transverse line 1 to form an riginal slip 1 and a copy receiving slip 1. The original slip 1 normally lies on top of the slip 1 and is provided on its lower face with a suitable transfer medium 1 by means of which the record written on the original slip l will be simultaneously reproduced on the slip 1 as a duplicate copy. The line of fold 1 of each sheet 1 is preferably weakened by a line of perforations in order that the slips 1, 1" may be readily detached from each other; also, the slip 1 is preferably scored or weakened by a line of perforations 1 in order that it may be readily detached from its bound edge. As will be clearly understood from the drawings, the upper or free end of the original slip 1 is not secured by tl e staples 8, but free to be thrown back or lifted to permit the insertion or positioning of a slip from the auxiliary pad 2 between it and the slip 1, as will be later described.

The auxiliary pad 2 comprises a plurality of sheets 2 which are secured together at their upper ends by the staples 4. Each sheet or slip 2 may be weakened on a transverse line (preferably by a line of perforations) 2, in order to permit its ready detachment from the pad. 011 its lower face, each slip 2 is provided with a suitable transfer medium, such as carbon, as shown at 2, whereby the record will be transferred to the slip below it. Each of the slips 1 and 2 may be provided with suitable rulings and printed matter corresponding to that shown on each slip 1.

making either a duplicate copy, or both a duplicate and triplicate copy simultaneously as may be desired. hen it is desired to make but one copya duplicate copyof the record, besides the original, the auxiliary set of slips 2 is thrown back (see Figs. 2 and 3) and then the uppermost set of slips 1, 1, is superposed on the stop card 6. The record may then be written in on the original slip 1 the transfer medium 1 of which will transfer the record to the slip 1. In the event it is desired to make both a duplicate copy and a triplicate copy of the record, the auxiliary pad is first thrown back as shown in Fig. 2 and the uppermost set of slips 1, 1, superposed on the stop card 6. Following these operations, the original slip 1 of the set of slips 1, 1, is lifted and one of the slips 2 of the auxiliary set of slips 2 is then positioned on top of the slip 1, after which the original slip 1 is allowed to fall back on top of the slip 2. If now a record is written on the original slip 1, such record will be duplicated by means of the transfer medium 1 on the slip 2 and triplicated by means of the transfer medium 2 on the lower face of the slip 2 to the slip 1. It will be seen from the foregoing description that the slip 1 operates as a duplicate slip when it is desired to operate the pad to make one extra copy of a record, and as a triplicate slip when the pad is operated to make two extra copies! 6 indicates a recess or cutaway formed in the stop member near its lower right hand corner and arranged to expose the lower right corner of the slip 1 of the uppermost set of slips 1, 1. The object and purpose of this recess 6 is to permit the positioning of each set of slips 1, 1, upon the stop card 6 in a rapid manner and to avoid contact of the hands of the operator with the carbon onany of the slips 1. The recess 6 is adapted for use in manipulating the set of slips 1, 1, into position to receive a record when only a duplicate copy thereof is to be made, and in manipulating the slips 1", 1, for this purpose (assuming that the auxiliary slips 2 are thrown back and the stop card 6 is positioned as shown in Fig. 2)

they are grasped between the thumb and first or second finger at the point exposed by the recess 6 and then partially folded or rolled back and lifted, the stop card 6 being slightly elevated by this operation, until they are free of the stop card 6. The stop card is then allowed to fall back to its former position and the slips 1, 1 dropped on top thereof in position to receive the record. The stop member is also formed with a cutaway, indicated at 6 at its upper end in order to expose the upper free corner of the original slip 1. The cutaway 6 is for the purpose of permitting the positioning of the slips 1, 2" and 1, one on top of the other, superposed on the stop card 6 in a rapid manner, when it is desired to make copies of the record in triplicate. When the book or pad is to be used in this manner (the auxiliary pad 2 being thrown back as shown in Fig. 2), the upper exposed corner of the original slip 1 is grasped by the operator and pulled upwardly and forwardly until it and the slip 1 are free of the stop card 6. The slips 1", 1, are then lowered slightly to position the slip 1 on the stop card 6; one of the slips 2 is then positioned on the slip 1 after which the original slip 1 is allowed to drop or fall on top of the slip 2. The slips 1", 2 and 1 are now positioned for use.

The cutaway portions 6, 6", are preferably arranged at the right hand side of the stop card 6 and at the lower and upper corners thereof, respectively. These cutaway portions provide for the manipulations of the slips in a rapid and positive manner whether a duplicate copy or triplicate copies of the record are to be made, and obviate any operation of the stop card 6 to position it below the sets of slips as they are successively used. These cutaway portions also permit the positioning of the slips 1, 1, by one operation whether it is desired to make a duplicate copy or triplicate copies of a record.

To those skilled in the art of making apparatus of the class described, many alterations in construction and widely differing embodiments and applications of my invention will suggest themselves, without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. My disclosures and the description herein are purely illustrative, and are not intended to be in any sense limiting.

hat I claim is 1. The combination of a main pad comarising a plurality of sets of original and copy-receiving slips, the original slip of each set being provided with a transfer medium on its lower face, an auxiliary set of slips each provided with a transfer medium on its lower face and arranged to be positioned between the slips of a set of slips of said main pad, and a stop card arranged to be positioned between the uppermost set of slips and the adjacent set of slips of the main pad, the said stop card being formed with cutaway portions in its upper and lower corners, to expose the original slip below it and permit the grasping thereof at either its upper or lower edge.

2. The combination of a main pad comprising a plurality of sets of original and copy-receiving slips, the original slip of each set being provided with a transfer medium on its lower face, an auxiliary set of slips each provided with a transfer medium on its lower face and arranged to be positioned between theslips of a set of slips of said main pad, and a stop card arranged to be positioned between the uppermost set of slips and the adjacent set of slips of the -ma-in pad, the said stop card being formed with a cutaway portion near or adjacent to its lower edge to expose the original slip below it, and one of the upper corners of the stop card being cutaway to expose the upper free end of the original slip below it.

3. The combination of a main pad com prising a plurality of sets of original and copy-receiving slips, means for transferring the record written on the original slip to the slip which may be positioned below it when the pad is in use, an auxiliary set of slips each provided with a transfer medium on its lower face and arranged to be positioned between the slips of a set of slips of said main pad, and a stop card arranged to be positioned between the uppermost set of slips and the adjacent set of slips of the main pad, the said stop card being formed with cutaway portions in its upper and lower corners to expose the original slip below it and permit the grasping thereof at either its upper and lower edge.

The combination of a main pad comprising a plurality of sets of original and copy-receiving slips, the original slip of each set being provided with a transfer medium on its lower face, an auxiliary set of slips each arranged to be positioned between the slips of a set of slips of said main pad, means for transferring the record written on the original slip from said auxiliary slip to the slip below it when the auxiliary slip is positioned for use, and a stop card arranged to be positioned between the uppermost set of slips and the adjacent set of slips of the main pad, the said stop card being formed with cutaway portions in its upper and lower corners, to expose the original slip below it and permit the grasping thereof at either its upper or lower edge.

5. The combination of a main base having one end extended to form a stop card, a supplemental base fixed to said main base and folded on itself to form a lower member and an upper member adapted to swing thereon, a main pad comprising a plurality of sets of original and copy-receiving slips fixed at one end to the upper member of the supplemental base and adapted to swing therewith, the original slip of each set being provided with a transfer medium on its lower face, and an auxiliary set of slips se-' portion near or adjacent to its lower edge to expose the original slip below it, and one of the upper corners of the stop member being cutaway to expose the upper freeend of the original slip below it.

The combination of a main base having oneend extended to form a stop card, a supplemental base fixed .tosaid main base and folded on itself to form a lower member and an upper member adapted to swing thereon, a main pad comprising a plurality of sets of original and copy-receiving slips fixed at one end to the upper member of the supplemental base and adapted to swing therewith, the original slip of each set being provided with a transfer medium on its lower face, and an auxiliary set of slips secured at one end to said main base, each of said auxiliary slips being provided with a trans-.

fer medium on its lower face-and arranged to be positioned between the slips of a set of slips of said main pad, and the stop card being arranged to be positioned between the uppermost set of slips and the adjacent set of slips of the main pad, the said stop card being formed with a cutaway portion near or adjacent to its lower edge to expose the original slip below it, and one of the upper corners of the stop card being cutaway to expose the upper free end 'of the original slip below it, each of the copy-receiving slips of the main pad and each of the auxiliary slips being weakened on a transverse line to permit detachment.

7. The combination of a main pad comprising a plurality of sets of original and copy-receiving slips, each of said sets being formed from a folded sheet of paper which is weakened on a transverse line and along 'the line of fold to permit detachment from each other and from the pad, the original slip of each set being provided with a transfer medium on its lower face, an auxiliary set of slips each provided with a transfer medium on its lower face and arranged to be positioned between the slips of a set of slips of said main pad, and a stop card arranged to be positioned between the uppermost set of slips and the adjacent set of slips of the main pad, the said stop card being formed with a cutaway portion near or adjacent to its lower edge to expose the original slip below it, and one of the upper corners of the stop card being cutaway to expose the upper free end of the original slip below it.

8. The combination of a main pad comprising a plurality of sets of original and copy-receiving slips, the original slip of each set being provided with a transfer medium on its lower face, an auxiliary set of slips each provided with a transfer medium on its lower face and arranged to be positioned between the slips of a set of slips of said main pad, and a stop card arranged to be positioned between the uppermost set of slips and the adjacent set of slips of the main pad, the said stop card being formed with a recess near or adjacent to its edge to expose the original slip below it, and the upper corner of the stop card at the side thereof in which the recess is formed being cutaway to expose the upper free end of the original slip below it.

9. The combination with a main pad comprising a plurality of sets of original and copy-receiving slips, the original slip of each set being provided with a transfer medium on its lower face, of an auxiliary pad comprising a plurality of triplicate slips each provided with a transfer medium on its lower face and arranged to be positioned between the slips of a set of slips of said main pad, and a stop card arranged to be positioned between the uppermost set of slips amp; the adjacent set of slips of the main pa In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in the presence of two Witnesses.
