To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD K. QBFJTTLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elmira, in the county of Cheinung and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manifolding-Salesbooks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apperta'i'ns to make and usethe same.

leaves 6, 7 and 8 being of opaque manifold- The leaves-6 and 7 may be formed of an integral sheet folded on itself as at 10 and weakened at thefold 10 so that these two leaves may be readily torn apart, the third leaf 8 being pasted to one or the other of the leaves 6 and 7 near the fold line therebetween. Inthe present embodiment the inter-sheet, or leaf 8, is pasted to the inner face of the leaf 7 and lies between the leaves 6 and 7. Thus each set of leaves includes an original leaf 6, a duplicate leaf 7, and a triplicate leaf 8, the original being the leaf on which-the inscription is directly made and the V duplicate and triplicate having transmitted thereto, through suitable transfer material, the inscription made upon the original leaf. It is to be understood that the pad 2 is made up of superposed sets of leaves like those described above for the top most set, one leaf ofea'ch set being attached to the stub.

The numeral 11 indicates a fourth, or quadruplicate, record leaf which, is adapted to lie between two of the other leaves. The quadruplicate leaf may be composed of either opaque or translucent manifold material, but in the present instance is of translucent material, as tissue or parchment. The leaves 11' form a pad attached to the support leaf 1 at a part remotefrom the hinge of pad 2 and along lines parallel to the stub 3. a a

The numerals 12 and 13 indicate two leaves of transfer material, as, for instance, carbon leaves in superposed relation adapted to be disposed to transfer impressions from the original to the other leaves of a set. In the present embodiment the carbon leaf 12 is single faced: that is to say, it is carbonized on its under face only, whereas the upper transfer leaf 13 is double faced, being carbonized on both its upper and lower faces, both transfer leaves 12 and 13 being connected to the stub of the pad 2 and adapted to lie between the record leaves. The leaves 11 are embodied in a second pad, the stub of which is indicated at 14 stapled to that end of the support 1 which is adiacent the stub 3 of the other pad. the several leaves 11 being adapted to lie upon the pad 2 or between the leaves of the topmost set thereof.

In setting the book one of the transfer leaves is disposed between the duplicate and triplicate leaves and 8 and another he tween the original leaf 6 and the triplicate leaf 8. Thereupon, the leaves 11 being thrown-back into the position shown in the drawing, the under leaf 11 is placed between the original and triplicate leaves 6 and 8 and directly against the upper carbon face of the transfer sheet 13. The operative or set position of the book is illustrated in the drawing, except that the parts are somewhat removed froin normal position for clearer disclosure of the relationship therebetween. The operator inscribes the outer face of the original leaf 6 and the inscription will be transferred to the duplicate, triplicate, and

uadruplicate leaves the inscription upon the quadru licate leaf being on the under side thereo and reversed but readily read by looking through the quadruplicate leaf which is transparent or translucent in order to permit its being read in this manner. The inscription having been made, the pad 2 may be lifted by grasping its stub portion 3 and turning it around the hin e 1ine4, whereupon the inscribed quadruplicate leaf will be withdrawn from between the leaves of the pad 2 and will fall on to the support 1 and be covered and protected by the pad 2 when this pad is restored to position. Thereupon the outer end of the three connected leaves 6', 7 and 8 may be grasped and together separated from the stub by tearing the lower leaf 7 along the weakened line 9. The pad is then ready to be set for another inscription.

Thus by the above described construction are accomplished, among others, the objects .hereinbefore referred to.

widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawin shall be interpreted as illustrative and no in a limiting sense.

It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claims is intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described, and all statements of the scope of the invention which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.

Having described my inventi on, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A manifolding book comprising, in combination, a series of setsof leaves for manifold copies, each set including an original leaf, a duplicate leaf and a triplicate leaf attached together at one end, one of the leaves of each set being attached to the stub portion, a quadruplicate leaf adapted to lie between two of said first mentioned leaves, and transfer material disposed to transfer impressions from the original to the other leaves of a set, including a double faced transfer leaf between said quadruplicate leaf and the next underlying manifold leaf.

2. A manifolding book comprising, in combination, a series of sets of leaves for manifold copies, each set including an original leaf, a duplicate leaf, and a triplicate leaf attached together at one end, one of the leaves of eac'hset being attached to the stub ifold copies, each set including an original leaf, a duplicate leaf, and a triplicate leaf attached together atone end opposite the stub portion of such pad, 6118 of the leaves of each set being attached to the stub por tion, a second pad oftranslucent leaves the stub portion of which is attached to said support to lie adjacent the stub of. the first mentioned pad, whereby the leaves of said second mentioned ad are adapted to lie between the leaves 0 thefirst-mentioned pad, and two transfer leaves connected to said first mentioned pad,- one adapted to lie between the duplicate and triplicate leaves, and the other being double faced and adapted to lienbetween the translucent and the triplicate leaves.

4. A 'manifolding book comprising, in combination, a support, apad having a stub and hinged to said support ail-the end opposite its stub, said pad comprising a series of sets of leaves for manifold copies, each set in; eluding an orieinal leaf, a duplicate leaf, and a triplicateleaf. attached together at one end, one of the leaves of each set attached to said stub, a second pad of leaves attached to said support at a. part remote from said hinge and adacent to said stub and along a line parallel 0 said stub, whereby the leaves of said second pad may be interleaved with either pair of said leaves of said first men,-

tioned pad, and may lie either'above or below said first mentioned pad, and two trans- ,fer leaves connected to the stub. end of said first-mentioned padin superposed relation,
