This invention relates to manifolding de vices and with respect to its more specific features to manifolding books, pads and the like.

These leaves may be bound with the record sheets of the pad land they work from the bound end of the pad into superposed relation with each other and with the record leaves of the uppermost set of four record leaves comprised in each record sheet of the pad 1. One of the transfer leaves, in the present embodiment the lower transfer leaf 17, is of sufiicient length to extend across the fold line 10, this fold line being consequent from folding the two ply folded sheet in to the four ply sheet, as before referred to. In this wise it will be noted that the transfer leaf 17 is adapted to lie on the record leaf 4 and beneath the record leaf 3, the transfer leaf 17 being folded on the line 19 which is parallel to the fold line 10. The other, the

upper transfer leaf 18, is of a length to lie between the folds consequent from folding the two ply sheet into the four ply sheet; that is, in consequence of the intermediate folding of the uppermost record sheet of the pad 1. 7

It willbe understood that in Fig. 1 the record'sheets and the transfer leaves are i1- lust-rated in open position,the arrangement being diagrammatic for the purpose of clearly disclosing the relative positions ofthepart-s. In operative condition the leaves will, of course, be flattened out so as to provide a pro: per disposition of the leaves for the manifolding operation. In connection with the arrangement illustrated in Fig. 1 it may be observed that certain advantages follow by arranging the supplemental pad 15 to work from the side of the pad 1 instead of from the end thereof. This modification is diagrammatically illustrated in Fig. 3.

In Fig. 2 the arrangement is the same as in Fig. 1 except that fivecopies' only are desired and hence the supplemental pad 15 and the support leaf 14 are omitted.

Fig. 1 diagrammatically illustrates the book with the leaves operatively set for the purpose of making six copies at one writing. Of course the leaves will be flattened out in the actual book. Inscription made upon the opaque original leaf 3 will be transferred direct to the opaque duplicate leaf 5, the opaque triplicate leaf 6 and opaque'quadruplicate leaf 4. Reversed inscription will be effected upon the transparent

supplemental leaves

11 and 15. After inscription the back ing 13 is rotated on its axis 30 so as to cause the supplemental leaf 15 to be withdrawn from manifolding position and'drop upon the support leaf 14, whereupon reverse rotation of the backing 13 will cause it to lie upon the inscribed leaf 15, and hold it and protect it. Thereupon the

3 and 5 are thrown back, (to the right, Fig. 1,) the transfer leaf 18 lifted, and the

5 and 6 together with the supplemental leaf 11 thrown back (to the right, Fig. 1) whereupon the inscribed set of leaves may be detached from the pad 1 by tearing along the weakened line 8. Subsequently the

3, 4, 5 and 6 may be torn from each other and distributed as desired. It will be noted that supplemental leaf 11 will remain attached to the leaf 6 during the aforesaid operations, but may 'betorn therefrom when desired. 7

Thus by the above described construction are accomplishedamong others the objects hereinbefore referred to.

As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodimentsof this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: I

1. In a manifo-lding pad, in combination, a setof record leaves bound into the pad, transfer material having a binding, said set including a record sheet folded along a fold, the folded sheet being folded'intermediate its ends on a line parallel to the first mentioned fold to provide four relatively superposed record leaves, said transfer material including, transfer leaves supported in a position to work from the bound end of said pad into superposed relation with each other and with the record leaves of said set," one of said transfer leaves' being of suflicient length to extend across the fold line of the uppermost record sheet consequent from said intermediate folding, and into overlapping manifold ing relation with the record leaves remote from said binding, and another of said transfer leaves being of a length to lie between said bound end of the pad and the folds consequent from said intermediate folding, said record sheet including a transparent record leaf pasted at the free end thereof and adapted to lie in'contact with the upper face of said first mentioned transfer leaf, which face is provided with transfer material, a backing to which the bound end of said pad is attached, a support leaf hinged to said backing remote from said bound end, and a supplemental pad of tisue leaves held to said support leaf along a line parallel to the bound end of the first mentioned pad, the leaves of said supplemental pad being relatively arranged for superposition relative to the leaves of the other pad and for engagement in manifolding relation with the upper face of said second mentioned transfer leaf, which is coated with transfer material for this purpose.

2. In a manifolding pad, in combination, a

set of record leaves bound into the pad; transfer material having a binding in the pad, said set including a record sheet folded transversely to provide a fold and the sheet thus 5 folded being folded transversely intermediate its ends on a line parallel to the first mentionedfold to provide four relatively super posed record leaves, said transfer material including transfer leaves Working from the 1, bound end of said pad into superposed relation with each other I and with the record leaves of'said set, one of said transfer leaves extending from the binding across the fold lines of the record sheet provided by said intermediate folding and into overlapping manifolding relation with the record leaves remote from said binding, and another of said transfer leaves being of a length to lie between said bound end of the pad and the folds consegq quent from said intermediate folding and a transparent record leaf pasted at the free end of said record sheet and relatively positioned so as to lie in contact with the upper face of said first mentioned transfer sheet which is 25 provided with transfer material.
