l. W. HARTNETT.
NECK'TIE HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED APR.10,I916

JAMES W. HARTN'ETT, OF POItTLAND, OREGON.
NECKTIE-HOLDER. I
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented July 18, 1916.
Application filed April 10, 1916. Serial No. 90,273.
To all whom it an my concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES IV. HARTNETT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Portland, county of Multnomah, State of Oregon, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Necktie-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally todevices adapted for attachment to a collar-button, and has particularly to do with means for maintaining a neck-tie in correct position. Neck-ties, after being tied correctly, frequently become displaced by slipping to a lower position, or to one side, and often create the impression that the wearer is careless of his personal appearance, besides taking away the well-groomed look that a well tied and properly positioned neck-tie should present.
The main object of my invention is toprovide a positive connection between the knot of the tie and the collar-button by means of which these parts will at all times be maintained in proper relative positions.
It is further my object to provide a device of this character which will be small holder of this character which may be incorporated in a tie-former of usual style.
The details of my invention are all fully shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my device; Fig. 2 is a section onthe line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a fragmental bottom plan view.
The general construction of my tie holder is as follows: a represents a center piece, which is made with a circular opening 6. 0 are downwardly extending legs which form the divergent sides of a slot. Said slot connects with the circular opening 5, and at the point of connection is slightly narrower than the diameter of the opening. The edges of the slot and opening are chamfered, as indicated by f. At the outer ends of the legs 0 is a laterally disposed elongated band cl, positioned in a plane normal to the plane of the center-piece a, and symmetrical therewith. The inside length between the ends of the band (Z is considerably greater than the width of the slot at the largest end thereof. Formed integrally with the band .(Z is a centrally located pin 6, which extends laterally upward, having reference to Figs. 1 and 2. Extending outwardly from the sides of the center piece, a, are the curved arms 9, which are provided on their outer ends with the slotted wings it. a
The general operation of my device is as follows: The neck-tie may be tied in any suitable style, as the wearer may desire. After the knot has been tied, the wings h are positioned up under the folds of the collar and the center-piece, a, is attached to the knot of the neck-tie by projecting the pin 6 into the inner side of the knot. The knot is then moved to the proper position upward until the head of the collar-button and the lower end of the slot are brought 1nto registration. By moving the knot downward the shank of the collar-button will be caused to relatively move through the slot into the circular opening I). The decreased width at the neck of the slot will cause the sides to spring apart when the collar-button passes into the opening 6, and act to prevent accidental displacement of the same. The clearance in the band will permit the head of the collar-button to pass freely there-through and the chamfered edge f will form a convenient seat for said head. The weight of the tie will then be supported on the pin 6, and through the medium of the latter will be transmitted to the collar-button upon which the centerpiece a will be mounted. Furthermore, the Wings 71, Wlll form side supports for keeping the device from tipping to one side or the other. YVhen the tie is tied on the formerwings before being placed in the collar, the device may be engaged with the knot before the tie is placed in position, and the further engagement of the device with the collarbutton is made in the same manner as previously described.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, a center piece adapted for attachment to a collar-button and provided with an upwardly projecting pin for being removably engaged to the knot of a neck-tie.
2. In a device of the character described, a center piece adapted for attachment to a collar-button and provided with an upwardly projecting pin for being removably engaged to the knot of a neck-tie, said center piece being also provided with means for holding the device against tipping.
3. In a device of the character described, a center piece adapted for attachment to a collar-button, and provided with an upwardly projecting pin for being remm'ably engaged to the knot of a neck-tic, said center piece being also provided with laterally extending arms for holding the device against tipping.
i. In a device of the character described, a center piece provided With an opening and an entrance slot thereto having divergent sides, the edges of said opening and slot being chainfered, a lateral band formed at the outer end of the slot, the inside clearance of which is greater than the Width of the outer end of the slot, and a pin secured to located, upwardly projecting pin adapted to be removably engaged to the knot of a neck-tie.
