BAG OR PACKAGE TIE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 18,1916.
Application filed. July 13, 1915. Serial No. 39,612.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED RAYMOND BREWSTER, a citizen of the United States, re-
siding at Ogunquit, in the county of York and State of Maine, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Bag or Package Ties, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This device relates to a fastening device or clasp which is more especially intended for use as a mailbag tie, but which is also adapted for use for other purposes, as, for example, as a bundle tie, all as will hereinafter fully appear.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the device in working position as a bag tie, a portion of the bag being denoted by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a view of the fastener removed from the bag.
Referring to the drawing, 12 denotes a buckle to one end of which is pivotally attached a hasp 13 having a straight transverse slot 14 with which communicates a crooked or serpentine slot 15. A strap 16 is pivotally attached to the other end of the buckle preferably by a looped plate 17 which is riveted to one end of said strap. Also attached to said strap, at a point removed from its point of attachment to the said buckle, is a ring 18 formed of a loop of wire providing a neck 19 which is of suitable size to be received in the crooked or serpentine slot 15 in the hasp 13. The said ring 18 is preferably attached to the said strap by means of plates 20 riveted to the said strap, said neck portion 19 being riveted to the inner of said plates.
The buckle 12 preferably comprises a middle bar 21 in addition to its end bars, said middle bar being provided with a sleeve or roller 22 which will serve to lessen friction on said bar when the strap 16 is drawn up in fastening or unfastening the tie, the said strap passing through said buckle between said middle bar and the end bar to which the said strap is attached.
In using the improved fastening as a mail 'bag tie strap 16 will pretferably be provided with a ticket or card holder 23 which is attached to the said strap by rlvetlng or otherwise and which may be of any suit-' able or well known form adapted to receive an address card slipped into the same. The straight transverse slot 14 in the hasp 13 is preferably about double the width of the thickness of the ring 18 which is received in said slot, so that the pivoted hasp may be readily passed over the said ring in fastening or unfastening the bag tie.
In the use of the device as a bag tie or bundle holder the article to be tied or held will be placed within a loop of the strap 16 and the said strap will then be drawn tightly around the said article or bundle, thereby bringing the ring 18 into register with the straight transverse slot 14 in the hasp 13. In thus drawing up the strap to secure the tie said strap will be brought tightly against the sleeve or roller 22 on the middle bar 21 of the buckle 12, said sleeve or roller lessening the friction and facilitating the adjustment of the strap on the article or bundle to be tied. WVhen the ring 18 on the strap has been brought into proper position relative to the transverse slot 14 of the hasp'13, the said hasp will be dropped down over the said ring, and then by moving the hasp slightly to one side or the other relative to the neck 19 of the said ring 18 the said neck will be caused to traverse the said crooked or serpentine slot, and will be brought up against the end wall thereof, thus fixing the tie in place on the article or bundle to be secured. NVhen the tie is to be released from the fastened or tied bag or bundle the strap 16 will be drawn through the buckle 12 accompanied by suitable sidewise movements of the hasp 13 to cause the crooked slot 15 to pass the neck 19 of the ring 18 so as to bring the said ring into register with the slot 14 and when in this position the pivoted hasp may be lifted over the said ring, thus releasing the tie.
It will be understood that accidental disengagement of the tie will be prevented by the crooked or serpentine slot 15 in which the neck portion 19 of the ring 18 is movable, in that while there is tension on the strap there will be little or no tendency for the neck portion of the ring to move in the said crooked or serpentine slot 15, and the peculiar form of said slot will, of itself, tend to prevent accidental movement of the said neck of the said ring therein.
In using the improved fastener as a mail bag tie it may, if desired, be riveted or otherwise permanently secured tothe mail bag so as not to be accidentally detached therefrom, and when the fastener is in place in tied position the mail bag may be locked in the usual manner by snapping a padlock other end of said buckle, a ring attached to 10 into the ring 18. said strap andadapted to be passed through Having thus described my invention I said transverse slotin said hasp, said ring claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent: having a neck adapted to be moved in the A tie or fastener consisting of a buckle, a said crooked or serpentine slot in said hasp. hasp pivotally attached to one end of said In testimony whereof I aflix my signa- 15 buckle and provided With a transverse slot ture. and a crooked or serpentine slot communicating therewith, a strap attached to the FRED RAYMOND BREl/VSTER.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, W'ashington, D. C.
