EXTENSION-TABLE.
To all w hom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES P. OUNNINGr HAM, a citizen ofthe United States, and a resident of Louisville, in the county of J efferson and State of Kentucky, have invented an Improvement in Extension-Tables, of which the following is a specification. V
This invention relates to tables, and more particularly to a novel extension device therefor. e n
.One of the objects of the present invention is to provide an extension device designed to facilitate the adjustment of the table to difierent sizes and prevent warping of the parts, which sometimes occurs in ord1-.
nary constructions.
Another object is vice of this character comprising a piece and so constructed as to be readily detached therefrom.
A stillfurther object is to provide an extension device of simple construction, durable, effective in carrying out the purpose for which it is designed and one which may be manufactured ata' minimum cost.
The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions, one of which, for the purpose of illustrating the invention, is shown in the accompanying drawing, in whichv Figure 1 is a perspective view of a table of pedestal type showing-the invention applied thereto. of the bridge sion device, the same being shown in perspective. Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are detailed perspective views of the diiferent parts of the extension device. Fig. 6 isa section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 2. Fig. 7 is atransverse section on the line 77 of Fig. 6, and Fig. 8 is an enlarged fragmentary side elevation of the bridge piece showing the manner in which one of the slides is connected thereto.
Referring more particularly to' the accompanying drawing, in which like reference characters indicate similar parts,; the numeral 10 indicates generally a table having a pedestal 11 with the bridge bar 12 at the top thereof.
The extension ably made of sheet metal and includes a pair of bridge pieces 13 secured to and extending transversely of the bar 12 adjacent the ends thereof. Each of the bridge pieces 13 com- Specification of Letters Patent.
the provision of a de- 7 bridge 1 and slides movable relative thereto;
. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary VIEW. bar of the table and the extenbody portion device which comprises the essential feature of this lnventlon, 1s preferprises inverted U-shaped body portion 14 having the base flanges 15 extending Patented July 18, 1916.
Application filed May 21, 1915. Serial No. 29,511.
laterally from the longitudinal edges thereof. These base flanges are provided with spaced openings 16 for the reception of suitable fastening devices whereby the piece is secured to the bar12. Each side of the body portion 14 is provided with an elongated:
The sides of each of the members 19 are also provided with small protuberances 26 which are adapted to engage the adjacent faces of the body portion 14 to space the parts and reduce friction therebetween. I
In assembling the device, each of the slide members 19 is placed in the position shown in Fig. 8 at right angles to the bridge piece 1 and has the lugs 22 mserted into the opening The said lugs 22 are of such a width as to permit of the insertion thereof into the slot 17 and thereby permit the movement of the slide to the position shown when the same will overlap the periphery of the opening 18, after which the slide member is swung to a horizontal position so that the projection 23 formed in the opposite end of the former is provided with slide I the bridge piece may be engaged with flange 25 of said member. In order to permit of this turning movement, the adjacent end of the base flange 15 is cut away as indicated at 27 and the adjacent end of the slide member is rounded as indicated at 28 thus permitting of the free turning movement of the latter member. .From the foregoing description it will be apparent that each of the slide members has a longitudinal movement relative to the bridge piece in either direction, thus permitting of the opening and closing of the top of the table in order to vary the size thereof.
I claim 1. An extension device comprising a bridge piece consisting of a substantially U- shaped body portion having lateral base flanges projecting from the longitudinal edges thereof, said body portion being provided in the sides thereof with opposed slots and enlarged openings communicating with one end of each slot, and a slide arranged on each side of said body portion and provided with guide lugs adapted to engage the slot in the adjacent side of said bridge piece, said lugs having a pivotal movement in the opening in said slot.
2. An extension device comprising a bridge piece consisting of a substantially U- shaped body portion having lateral base flanges projecting from the longitudinal edges thereof, said body portion being provided in the sides thereof with opposed slots and enlarged openings communicating with one end of each slot, a slide arranged on each side of said body portion and provided with guide lugs adapted to engage the slot in the adjacent side of said bridge piece, said lugs having a pivotal movement in the opening in said slot, and a projection on each sideof the body portion of said bridge piece adapted for engagement with the adj acent slide for guiding the same.
3. An extension device comprising a bridge piece consisting of a substantially U- shaped body portion having lateral base flanges projecting from the longitudinal edges thereof, said body portion being provided in the sides thereof with opposed slots and enlarged openingscommunicating with one end of each slot, a slide arranged on each side of said body portion and provided with guide lugs adapted to engage the slot in the adjacent side of said bridge piece,
. said lugs having a pivotal movement in the opening in said slot, a projection on each side of the body portion of said bridge piece adapted for engagement with the adjacent slide for guiding the same, and protuberances in the sides of said slides for spacing the same from said bridge piece.
.4. An extension device for tables comprising a bridge piece having a slot terminating at one end in an enlarged opening, and a slide cooperating with said bridge piece and having means engaging said slot to guide saidslide, said means having a pivotal movement in the enlarged end of said slot whereby said slide may be attached to and detached from said bridge piece.
5. An extension device for tables comprising a bridge piece having a guide slot therein and having a projection formed thereon, and bent to provide a guide groove, a slide member cooperating with said bridge piece and having a flange upon one edge thereof adapted for engagement with the guide groove formed by said projection, and means engaging said guide slot for guiding said slide.
