TAPE-AFFIXING ATTACHMEN T FOR GARMENT-GLASIS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 11, 1916..
Application filed May 3, 1915. Serial No. 25,590.
To all whom it may concern:
Be ,it known that I, BENJAMIN F. ORE- wiLnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and Stateof Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tape-Aiiixing Attachments for Garment-Clasps, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a part or attachment for securing and holding inplace a tape which enters into the construction of a garment clasp. One of the objects of provide a member for carrying out the purpose above specified, which is cheap and simple of construction and is formed as an integral part of and simultaneously with a necessary portion of the garment clasp. A further object of the invention is to bring about this result without changing in any way or manner the appearance or effectiveness of the garment clasp as a whole. A further object of the invention is to provide a member which can be applied in a simple and quick manner, and to eliminate stitching and similar laborious operations which have heretofore been indulged in in effecting the securing of the tape portion of the invention is to a garment clasp.
The invention further consists in the features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is an elevation showing a garter equipped with the attachment of the present invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged section on line 22 of Fig. 1, and, Fig. 3, an enlarged section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
In the art to which the present invention relates, it is now the universal custom to suspend the stud of the garment clasp by means of a flexible tape and to employ a clamping member having a button-hole slot therein, which operates in conjunction with the stud to clasp the garment. All this is well understood in the art. It is extremely desirable and, in fact, practically a necessity at the present time, to cover the back of the base which supports or carries the stud, as well as the back of the clamping member. This is to carry out the rustless effect, which does not permit any of the metal of the various parts of the garter appliance to be exposed along its rear face. The invention accomplishes the foregoing desired features and does so in a manner whereby the cost of manufacture of the article is considerably reduced, quantities being taken into conslderation.
Referring now to the drawings: the invention is illustrated in connection with a garter appliance comprising an elastic section 4; equipped with an attaching member 5, an adjusting buckle 6 and a member 7 for connecting the elastic to the non-elastic section 8, all of which may be of any suitable construction. This non-elastic section 8 is, as shown, of a two-part formation and each part carries a stud 9 attached to a base 10, and, cooperating with this stud to clamp the garment is a clamping member 11 formed with a button-hole slot 12.
In order to properly suspend the stud and to cover the back of the base of the stud, as well as the back of the clamping member 11, a supplemental tape 13 is employed, which is looped back upon itself, one portion 14: being woven through suitable slots 15 in the stud base, and the other portion 17 of the tape 13 extending along the rear face of the base 10 and clamping member 11. The free ends 18 of the tape 13, as will be seen from Fig. 3, are inserted into the recess of a U-shaped member 19 which, in fact, is the upper portion of the clamping member 11, the front face 20 of this member 19 being the ordinary top portion of the clamping member 11, as will be apparent from the drawings, while the rear portion 21 of this U-shaped member is formed by bending upward a portion of the material struck out from the clamp ing member in forming the button-hole slot 12that is to say, in forming the clamping member, in place of completely cutting out the center thereof to form the button-hole slot 12, the upper portion of the material inside the walls of the slot, which would otherwise be blanked out, is not cut away along the upper edge thereof, and this uncut portion is bent back and forms the rear part of the U-shaped member 19, so that this rear portion is formed at the same operation which forms the clamping member, and use is made of otherwise waste material to form the same. Preferably a flange 22 is formed along the upper edge of this rear portion 21 and this flange alines with a slot 23 in the front portion 20.
When the device is turned out from the die press, the rear portion 21 is given an angular disposition so that the flanged edge thereof is spaced away a greater distance .struction, said body being from the front portion than its lower edge. This permits of the ready insertion of the end of the tape section 8 and the ends of the tape section 13, in the manner shown in Fig. 3. Then, by a swaging operation, the tape inserted between the front and rearsections of the U-shaped member 19, is forced or crowded into the slot 23 and they are thus fixedly held in position against displacement. As will be observed from the drawings, the tape 13 passes over the top of the rear section 21- and down over the back thereof, rendering this portion of the device of a rustless nature.
claim:
1. .A device of the class described, comprising a loop-shaped clamping member of one piece construction formed with a button-hole slot, a cross-plate above said slot, a horizontal recess in the cross-plate, a tongue ormed of a portion of the metal lying within the confines of the button-hole slot, said tongue being bent back to extend to the rear of the cross-plate and forming a U-shaped slot to the rear of the cross-plate, with the closed endof the slot at the bottom of the cross-plate, and said tongue being provided with a flange projecting toward and in register with the recess of the clamping member, substantially as described.
2. An attachment of the class described, comprising a body portion of one-piece conformed to provide abutton-hole slot and an upper cross-plate above said slot, said cross-plate being formed with a horizontally extending slot therein, a tongue extending in the lower endof the cross-plate and bent back to form a U-shaped slot at therear ofthe cross-plate, with the closed end thereof lying at the bottom of the cross-plate, a stud base, webbing woven through the stud base, the free ends of the webbing lying within said U-shaped slot with the body of the webbing passing over the free end of the tongue and downwardly across the back thereof, a flange on the free end of the tongue, said flange alining with the horizontal slot in the cross-plate, whereby when said tongue is swaged inward toward said cross-plate, said webbing is forced into saidslot and held in place, substantially as described.
3. An attachment of the class described, comprising a body portion of one-piece construction, said body being formed to provide a button-hole slot and an upper cross-plate above said slot, said cross-plate being formed with a horizontal recess, a tongue extending from the cross-plate and bent back to form a U-shaped slot at the rear of the cross-plate, with the closed end thereof lying at the bottom of the cross-plate, a stud base, webbing woven through the stud base, the free ends of the webbing lying within said U-shaped slot with the body of the webbing passing over the free end of the tongue and downwardly across the back thereof, a flange on the free end of the tongue, said flange alining with the recess in the cross-plate, where by said tongue is swaged inward toward said cross-plate, and said webbing is forced into said recess and held in place, substantially as described.
