Description
JAMES-J. SULLIVAN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
SPOOL-HOLDEB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 4, 1916.
Application led November 20, 1815. Serial No. 82,517.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I JAMES J. SULLivaN, a citizen of the United States,'and residin at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings an State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spool- Holders, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it uppertains to make and use the Same.
This invention relates to devices for holding spools of thread, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class designed for useby ladies when sewing and which is adapted to be detachably coni nected with the front of a body garmentl so as to hold a spool of thread in a convenient position for use.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of Whichthe accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are de signated by suitable reference characters in each of the views2 and in which i- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved spool holder and showing a. spool of thread mounted thereon; Fig. 2 a front viewbut showing the parts in a different position; Fig. 3 a lan view of a blank of sheet metal from which a part of the spool holder shown in Fig. 1 is made; and Fig. 4 a view of another part of said holder.
In the practice of my invention, as shown in the drawing, I provide a back plate a foi-med from a blank a, shown in Fig. 3, bent at one end to form a right angled arm af provided at the free end, and in one edge portion thereof, with a, transverse recess a* partially closed by a hook-shaped finger af. I also rovide a finger piece b which is also forme from a blank shown in Fig. 4, said blank being provided at one end with a right-angled ear piece b which is placed on and pivoted to the end portion a" of the back plate a, as clearly shown at a?, and the other end portion of the blank b is formed into the finger b which is bent at right angles to said lank, as clearly shown in Fi 1, and the free end of which is adapted to e forced into the recess a* where it is normally held by the finger a".
The back plate a is preferably stamped to form an ornament a, and said back plate is provided at the back thereof with a pin c whereby the spool holder may be connected with the front body ortion of a garment, and in the use of this device the finger b is detached from the recess a* and turned on its pivot at a1 in order to permit of a spool d being slipped onto said finger, after which said finger is swung into the position shown in Fig. 1 and forced into the recess a* where it is held by the spring action thereof until forcibly released in order to detach the spool d.
This device may be used whenever such devices are required, and my invention is not limited to any particular form of the pin c nor to any method of connecting it with the back plate a, nor to the other details in form and construction shown and described, and various changes herein and modifications thereof may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isz- A spool holder composed of two sheet metal parts one of which forms a back for the holder and is provided with a top partA which projects at right angles thereto and the other of which constitutes the spool support and comprises a bottom part which projects at right angles to the back of the holder and is provided with an upwardly directed finger member adapted to be connected with the top part which projects from the back of the holder, said bottom part being also provided with a vertical member pivotally connected with the back of the holder whereby said finger member is rotatable in a plane parallel with the back of the holder.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have si ed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 18th day of November, 1915.
JAMES J. SULLIVAN.
