PLOW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 1, 1916.
Application filed November 16, 1914. SeraI'No. 872,331.
To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES LEONARD LAMB, a citizen of the United States, residing in Voodburn, in the county 'of Clarke and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plows, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to plows, and particularly embraces means for detachably securing a share to the mold board.
It is an object of my invention to provide a device of this class so designed that the share may be quicklyand readily attached to the mold board and withalltightly and adjustably secured in place.
rlhe above and other features of novelty, advantages and capabilities will become apparent from a detail description of the accompanying drawings in which I have illustrated a practical embodiment of the invention but the construction shown there is to be understood as illustrative only and not as defining the limits of the invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a plow looking at the mold boardembodying one form of my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of the means secured to the mold board and the cooperating meansfor tightly and adjustably securing the share in place and Fig. l is a perspective detail view of the member secured to the mold board.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the mold board 10, which may be of any suitable form, has secured thereto, by any practical means, such as the bolts shown, a bracket 11, which bracket in the particular form shown is made of a flat piece of metal bent to form two flanges 12, on the upper side of which flanges are formed grooves 13. Secured to the share 14, which, like the mold board, may be of any commercial form, is a bracket 15 provided with a pair of flanges 16, having alined openings in which is pivotally mounted an arm 17, adapted to swing up and down about its pivotal connection. The bracket 15 is so positioned as to permit the free end of the arm 17 to swing upwardly and between the flanges 12, the extreme end `of the arm being provided with a suitable opening to receive a wedge key 18, which, in position, is received in .the grooves 13.
When it is desired to secure a share to a mold' board provided with my device all that 1s necessary is to throw the hanger upwardly into position and then insert the wedge key and by means of a hammer or similar tool, drive the key in the proper direction until the share is tightly drawn in place. Td detach the share simply drive the key in the opposite direction sufhciently to release the free end of. the hanger.
From this it will be seen that the share can easily and quickly be attached and detached from the mold board and the connecting edges of the share and mold board drawn tightly together to present a smooth outer surface for turning the soil, thus eliminating the objectionable space or gap present between such parts with the devices commonly used. Furthermore, when the parts become worn the adjustable .feature of' the device is such that it will, by driving the wedge key sufficiently, take care of the play and insure a tight connection between the share and mold board.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a device of the class described, a pair of flanges adapted to be secured to a share, an arm pivotally mounted in said flanges and adapted to swing about said pivot, a bracket adapted to be secured to a mold boardV and means for drawing said arm toward said bracket and detachbly se curing it in place.
2. In a device of the class described, a pair of flanges adapted to be secured to a share, an arm adapted to be pivotally mounted in said flanges, a bracket adapted to be seouredto arnold board and a -beveled wedge for drawing said arm toward said bracket and securing it in place.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name to this specication in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES L. LAMB. Witnesses:
