JOHN R. BUCHANAN, WA'UKESHA, WISCONSIN.
WHEELED-CHAIR SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 27, 1916.
Application filed August 4, 1915. Serial No. 43,656.
' To all whom it may concern:
w inconvenience in Be it known that I, J OHN R. BUCHANAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at \rVaukesha, in the county of VVaukesha, State of WVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVheeled- Chair Supports; and I do declare the fol lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in wheeled supports and is particularly directed to the provision of such a support for chairs.
The various types of rolling chairs designed for use of invalids present a serious that they are of such size as to prove cumbersome in use in an ordinary household, and it is therefore the object of the present invention to provide a wheeled device for the use of invalids which is of such design that it will not prove cumbersome and permit free passage through doorways.
It is further an object of the invention to provide such a device which may have associated therewith as a part thereof a chair of conventional type.
It is still further an object to provide such a device which is exceedingly simple in structure so as to prove durable'and efficient in continued use, and to permit manufacture thereof at a comparatively low cost consistcut with such durability and efliciency.
With the above and otherobjects and advantages in view, the invention resides more particularly in the novel combination, formation and arrangement of parts as more fully described and pointed out in the appended claims.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings, wherein similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved device. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the device. Fig. 1 is a perspective view of one corner of the device showing the modified means for holding the chair legs.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the improved device is shown as comprising a frame formed of the side sills 5 and the end sills 6 which .securement comprising screws 11 passed through the joints.
The frame is braced by triangular plates 12 secured on the corners thereof, and to secure a chair 13 of the usual type on the device, the ends of the transverse sills 6 are provided with sockets 1 1 seating the legs of thechair. If the chair is relatively small, securing sockets therefor may be provided in the plates 12 as designated at 14.
To provide a draft attaching means for the device positioned sufficiently outwardly of the front thereof to promote efficient operation, and at the same time to provide a foot rest, the side sills 5 are extended and inclined upwardly at 15, and a foot board 16 has its ends seated in a cutaway portion 17 in the top thereof and secured. These extended portions 15 carry eyes 18 with which may be associated any desired draft means.
In Fig. 4 is shown a modified form of the device wherein the legs of the chair seat in socket members 19 which carry laterally extending arms 20 at their ends which are secured on the sills. In this form of the device illustrated, some adjustment is had for different sizes of chairs, as the relative position 'of these socket members may be varied.
From the foregoing it is observed that an exceedingly simple device has been provided with which may be associated a chair of conventional type to form a wheeled chair particularly adapted for use of invalids and which may be readily and conveniently moved about and passed through doorways.
While I have illustrated and described a particular embodiment of my invention, I have merely done so for the sake of convenience and I do not wish to be limited to that particular numerous changes may be made within the details of construction thereof without in any way departing from the spirit of the embodiment as it is obvious that the scope of the aped to form a rectangular frame, substair 1 tially triangular bracing plates at each corner of the frame and secured to the side and end sills to hold the frame against distortion, each of saidbracing plates being provided with a plurality o l sockets; and Wheeled supporting means'for said frame.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, inthe presence of two witnesses.
" JOHN R. BUCHANAN.
