HARRY MEBTZ, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
ADJUSTABLE BACK r03. CHAIRS.
Application filed December 19, 1917. Serial No. 207,948.
. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that HARRY MER'rz, a citizen I of the United States, residing at Baltimore,
in the county of Baltimore andState of Maryland, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Backs for Chairs; and he does hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
and to theletters and figures of reference marked thereon, which 'form a part of this specification. i
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in adjustable backs for chairs,
the object in View being to produce a simple-- and eflicient device of this nature which will brace the back of the person sitting in the chair and cause the chest to be thrown back and the abdomen forward and producing a chair which will be thoroughly hygienic.
More specifically the present invention consists in the provision of an adjustable back for a chair designed especially for use where'laborers are accustomed to work for long hours while sitting down and serving to brace and ease the back.
The invention consists in various details of construction, combinations and arrange- .ments' of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claims. I
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings which, with theletters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a chair made in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation. Fig. 3 is a view showing the chair in an adjusted position, and'Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view.
Reference now being had tothe details of the invention by letter:
A designates the seat of an ordinary chair and wherethe usual back is to be converted into aswinging one. The side posts and the intermediate slats or rounds are cut off and a strip, designated by letter B of any suitable material, is adapted to fit over the lower ends of the Side pieces orrounds, thus securely bracing the same. Rods designated Specification of Letters. Patent.
the seat adjacent to the edges thereof, and
H designates a bail-shaped member having ATENT' OFFICE.
to the marginal edges of the back, also angled :ends H which are pivotally connected to the rods C. Said bail-shaped member is adapted to engage corresponding notches in the two plates H, according as it may be desired to hold the rods in different adjusted positions. In the event of, aperson sitting on the chair desiring to sit on the forward edge of the chair, the bail-shaped member is adjusted so that the back -will swing forward to a convenient position, so that the back of the person will engage the back of the chair when sitting in' such position. If the person desires to sit well back in the chair, the bail-shaped member may be swung out into notches toward the rear of the chair, as will be understood.-
In any of the adjusted positions of the chair it will be understood that the back will swing upon its pivot and a person may-sit in an inclined position by simply leaning backward.
By the provision of E chair made in accordance with my invention, a simple and eflicient device is afforded which will meet a long felt want, especially in factories where laborers have long hours to sit at their Work, and which will brace and strengthen the back, and at the same time afford hy-' gienic means for causing the person to sit erect.
What I claim to be new is:
1. An adjustable back for chairs comprising a seat and a back, plates. secured to the rear portion of the seat-upon opposite sides and havingnotches-therein, rods pivotally connected to said plates and back, a member pivoted at its ends to said rods and adapted to engage the notches in the plates.
2. An adjustable back for chairs comprising a seat and a back, plates secured to the rear portion of the seat upon opposite sides and having notches therein, rods pivotally connected to said plates and back, a bailshaped member adapted to engage oppositely disposed notches in .said plates, and
havin angled end portions pivotally connecte tosaid rods.
3. In combination with e chair seat, pletee fastened to the upper surface of the seat near the rear portion thereof end opposite each other, each plate, having an opening the marginal edge of which is notched, rode pivoted to said pletes in advance of the openings therein, a book to which the upper ends of the rods are pivoteolye heil-shepedl member passing through said openings and eng'egin opposite disposed notches therein seid heil-shepeo member having engiefi.
to seid rods,
pon'tIons extendim mitside the pletes, the extreme ends of the member being curved toward each other end pivotelly connected 15 In testimony whereof .T hereunto efix my signature in presence of two witnesses,
HARRY MERTZ,
