Description

O. S; CAMP.
Improvement in Wood Encased Cans.
Patented Sep. 12,1871` 'Wlncssas PATENT C EE1cEv ORRIN S. CAMP, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN WOOD-INCASED CANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,904, dated September 12, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORRIN S. CAMP, of Grand Rapids, in t-he county of Kent and State of Michi gan, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Wood-Incased Metal Cans 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specitication and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a vertical section of my invention.
This invention has for its object a novel method of connecting together a metal can and wood case; and consists in providing' the wooden case with a metal hoop anged to rest on the edge thereof, and providing the can with a iiange to overlap said hoop, and then securing the two metal surfaces together by means of solder.
Referring to the drawing, A represents the metal can, cylindrical in form, and provided with a flange, Bl, extending outward. To this ange the upper portion of the can is secured. B designates the Wooden case, also cylindrical, and of a size just sufficient to contain the cylindrical part of the can. This case is furnished with a wood bottom, C, inserted within it, and fastened by nails passing through a wood or metal hoop, D, the saine being placed around the outside and lower part of the wood case. The upper part of the case B is provided with a metal hoop, E, the upper edge of which is turned over and inward in such a way as to covei the edge of the wood. This hoop is fastened to the case by nails or rivets, and to it may be attached the ears e of the bailI e.
When the can is placed in the case the flange B rests on the turned edge ofthe hoop E, and as the two metal surfaces are thus in contact they may be connected by solder, rendering the can and case inseparable.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described wood-incased metal can, consisting of the can A, provided with the external horizontal ange B, and of the case B', provided with the inwardly-flanged hoop E, covering the upper edge of the case B', and soldered to the iiange B, as speciiied.
In testimony that I claim the above l`have hereunto subscribed my naine in the presence of two witnesses.
Witnesses: ORRIN S. CAMP.
