UN TED STATES WILLIAM A. CARPENTER,
. PATENT OFFICE.
or BANKERS, MICHIGAN? MEASURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,974, dated December 11, 1883.
v V Application filed September 25, 1883. No model.)
To all whom/it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM A. CARPEN- TER, of Bankers, in the county of Hillsdale and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Measure, ofwhich the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription.
The object of my invention is toprovide a new and improvedmeasure for measuring grain, vegetables, 850., which measure is of simple construction, strong, and durable.
The invention consists in a measure formed.
of a metal cylinder having its top and bottom edges turned overwire rings. A wooden ring surrounds the upper part of the cylinder, and a wooden bottom rests upon the bottom flange, formed by turning the edge of the cylinder over a wire.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying.
drawings, forming part of 7 this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in' both the figures.
Figure l is a crosssectional elevation of my improved measure. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same.
A metal cylinder, A, has its upper edge turned or bent outward and around an annular wire, B, surrounding the upper part of the cylinder, whereby the said annular wire will be held on the upper edge of the cylinder. A
wooden ring, 0, is provided at its bottom edge driven through the cylinder. A into the'fiange D and into the edge of the circular bottom F.
The ring 0 serves as a handle to hold and lift the measure.
The measure is verylight, strong, durable, simple in construction, and cheap. The wood enbottom has the advantage over a metal bottom that it does not sag or spring down under the weight of the materialwhen the measure is filled, which sagging -makes the measure with metal bottom inaccurate.
Having thus described my invention, what I W claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters 'Patent, is v 1. A measure formed of a metal cylinder having its upper edge turned over aWire ring, which cylinder is surrounded at its top by a 'wooden ring, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In a measure, the combination, with the metal cylinder A, having its upper edge turned over a wire ring, B, of the Wooden ring 0, surrounding the upper part of the cylinder, and
provided with .a flange, D, extending under.
the Wire ring B, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. In a measure, the combination, with the metal cylinder A,havingits bottom edgeturned inwardly over a wire ring, E, of the bottom F, resting onthe flange formed by the Wire E, substantially as hereinshown .and described.
4; The combination, with a cylinder having an outwardly-projecting flange at its upper edge and an inwardly-projecting flange atits bottom edge, of the ring 0, surrounding the upper part of the cylinder, and the bottom F, resting on the inwardly-projecting bottom flange, substantially as herein shown and described.
