Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. FoEsYTI-I, a citizen of the UnitedV States, and a resident of the city of Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Draw-Bar Yokes of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to draft gear casings or yokes-,for connecting the draw bar and the springsand followers of the draft gear of railway cars, and it consists in a two part housing `or yoke composed of forged or pressed steel interchangeable halves.
The object of the invention is a light, strong yoke which can be cheaply made, and which can be easily removed and replaced to give access Vto the parts of the draft gear.
Further objects appear in connection with the followingl description of the. draw bar yokes shown in the accompanying drawings, and whatI the invention consists in is more particularly defined in the appended claims. 4. Y
In the drawings, wherein thesame referencecha-racters are used to designate like parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a plan view of the draft'sills and draft gear of a railway car embodying one form of the invention, partly in section 0n the horizontal axial plane of the draw'bar yoke; Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, with a portion of one sill removed to disclose the draw bar yoke; Figsf and4 are vertical cross-sections on the lines 3-3 and 4-4, respectively, in Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a plan of a sheet metal blank suitable for producing one of the interchangeable halves of` the draw bar yoke shown in Figs. 1 to 4; Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a draw bar yoke comprising halves made from the blank shown in Fig. 5; Fig. 7 is a perspective view of one of the halves of the yoke shown in'Fig. 6.
The draft gearA shown in Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, is of a tandem spring type, but the invention is applicable to twin-spring, friction, and other types of draft gear. draft sills 11 are tted with suitable draft lugs 12 for two sets of follower blocks 13 and springs 14, arranged in tandem between the sills. A metal plate 15 which is bolted to the under sides of the draft sills supports the yoke 16. The yoke 16 is made in top and bottom sections or halves 17 which are counterparts of each other, as shown in Figs. 6

The blank vconsists of a straight middle portion having pairs of oppositely disposed wings 18 at each end, each of which wings is punchedwith av slot 19 par allelto the centerline of the blank. The slots 19j are arranged'in pairs on opposite sides of the centerline of the blank, the slots in each pair being equidistant from the center line ofthe blank. The wings 18 of each pair are bent at right angles tothe plane of the blank and parallel to each other, with the slots 19 in alinement, forming side walls at the ends of the `yoke. One pair of wings is bent along lines which are wider apart than the lines upon which the other pair are bent so that the wider spaced pair of wings straddle the closer spaced pair of wings of the mating half Vsection 17 in assembled posi- ,-tion, Across the middle of each` section 17 is anabutment 20half as high as the side walls 18 formed by bending up the side tongues 21 at right anglesto thev plane of the blank and bending their ,extremities across the blank and riveting them together, as shown in Fig. 7. The spaces between the abutments and the inner edges of the side walls 18 atv the ends of the yoke members are slightly less than the spaces between the corresponding pairs of draft lugs 12.
The two mating half Vsections 17 are as- 4sembledone inverted abovevtheother, with the wider spaced wings or walls on one section embracing the narrower spaced wings or walls on the other section and the. slots v19 at each end of the sections in alinement. The abutments 20 ofl the two sections meet at their tips and together form a stiff cross wall at .the middle of the yoke. The two sections17 are held together by pins 22 through vthe alining slots 19 in the side walls. The ends of the sections l, 17 have narrow flanges23 turned up between the side walls 18. The front endof the yoke incloses the tail end of the draw bar 24, to which it is secured by the front transverse pin 22. The tail end of the draw bar has a pair of oppositely disposed shoulders 25 which fit inside of the flanges 23 and assist in transmitting the pull on the drawbar to the yoke. The extremity of the draw bar bears against the forward follower block 13.
The pins 22 pass through the yoke from side to side, and the ends of the pins pass through slots 26 in the draft sills and are s efrom the draw bar by merely taking out the forward pin 19 and lifting the top section sufficiently to disengage the flanges 23 and shoulders 25.
The webs form the side walls of the yoke Aand have two openings 32 spaced lengthwise thereof7 through which the followers are arranged. These openings are sepa-rated by intermediate portions 33 of the web which form a middle abutment for the middle followers. The forward end of the web or side wall of each section is punched with a narrow slot 35i. rThe slots of the two half Sections are in alinement and the pin which secures the draw bar in place passes through them. The top and bottom flanges of the side sections are provided at their front ends with inturned cross flanges 35 which engage with the shoulders of the draw bar to take t-he draw bar pull. The rearends of the sections 3l are closed by semi-cylin drical flanges which connect the rear ends of the top and bottom flanges. The two sections 31 are held together by the transverse pin which secures the draw bar. Cotter pins may be passed through the ends of this draw bar pin to keep it in position in the slots 34. p
The two sections of the yoke member are arranged parallel to each other and the draft springs are compressed and with the followers are assembled in the space within the yoke with the followers projecting through the opening in the side Vwalls.` The assembled yoke membersand draft gear are placed between the draft sills, with the front ends of the sections separated enough to permit thetail end of the draw bar to be slipped endwise between the end flanges vof the sections, whereupon the latter are brought together and the assembled parts are secured in place between the draft sills by passing the pins 22 through the sills and yoke sections.
The invention is not restricted to the forms .and arrangements of the parts as shown and described.
.I claim the following as my invention:
l. A pressed steel draw bar yoke member having side walls and openings therein for the draftgear followers, and an abutment for said followers comprising integral portions of the side walls bent across the cenverted counterpart yoke member assembled therewith.
3. A pressed steel draw bar yoke member having side walls at its ends, the side walls at one end beingspaced farther apart than the side walls attheother end, and slots through said sidewalls at` the same distance from the bottom wall of said yoke member, whereby said yoke member may be inverted over a similarl yoke member with the side walls at the ends of said yoke members embracing each other', and with said slots in alinement at each end.
l. A pressed steel draw bar yoke composed of duplicate counterpart halves which are coeXtensive in length and width and which are interlocked andv secured together and to the draw bar by duplicate transverse pins.
5. A pressed steel ldraw bar yoke composed of duplicate counterpart halves which are coeXtensive in length and width and which are inter-locked and secured together and to the draw bar by transverse pins adapted to pass through the draft sills, one of said pins being removable'to permit removal of the draw bar without removing said draw bar yoke. i f
