DRAW-BAR ATTACHMENT FOR CAR-CUPLINGS.

To all whom. it may concern.:
Be it known that we, HENRY C. VILLIAH- soN and HERMAN PRIEs, citizens of the United States, residing at Michigan City, in the county of La Porte and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draw- Bar Attachments for Car- Couplers; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to a novel construc- I tion in a draw-bar attachment for car-couplers, the object being to provide a device of this character of simple and durable construction and efficient operation; and it consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating our invention, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section, partially in elevation, of a carcoupler provided with a draw-bar attachment constructed in accordance with our invention, taken on the line 1 1 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 2 2 0f Fig. l. Figs. 3 and-4 are vertical transverse sections on the lines 3 3 and 4 4, respectively, of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 6 and shows the guide-castings secured to the draft-beams in elevation. Fig. G is a fragmentary bottom plan view of the draft-beams of a car with the coupler removed.
The draft-beams A are gained vertically on their inner faces, as at l and 2, to receive portions 3 and 4, respectively, of the guidecastin gs 5 ,which are secured thereto by means of bolts Gand socketed bolts 7 and 8. Said guide -castings 5 consist of plates provided with oppositely-extending fianges 9 and 10 atq their upper and lower ends, said fianges 10 being adapted to engage the lower faces of said draft-beams A and said flanges 9 being adapted to act as guides for the followers 11 and 12, forming part ofthe draw-bar attachment. Said portions 3 of said guide-castings 5 consist of pockets or recesses formed therein to receive said follower 11, and at the forward ends of the same vertical recesses or sleeves 13 are formed in said castings through which bolts 14 are adapted to pass, by means Serial No. 642,742. (No model.)
of which guide-plates 15 are secured to said castings 5, upon which said followers 11 and 12 move. Adjacent their rear ends said guide-castings 5 are provided with vertical sleeves 4, the walls of which proj ect outwardly on both sides of said plate and enter the gains 2 in said draft-beams A. Bolts 16, securing the other ends of said plates 15 to said guidecastings,.pass through said sleeves 4. The inwardly-projecting portions of said sleeves 4 form stops to limit the inward movement of said follower 12, which moves between the middle portion of the guide-castings 5.
A loop 17 is secured at its ends to the inner end of the draw-bar B by means of the rivets 18, and in said loop the followers 11 and 12 are mounted, a double spring 19 being interposed between said followers, which is centered by means of the centering-blocks 20, riveted to saidl followers. As before stated, saidfollower 11 moves in the recess or pocket 3 of the guide-casting 5 and is limited in its movement by the shoulders formed at the ends of said recesses. In this manner the compression of the spring 19 in shunting or coupling two cars is limited to the extent of movement of the follower 11, thus preventing injurious compression of the spring and increasing its life.
It will be obvious that upon imparting a draft or pull the spring is not subjected t0l a sudden shock sufficient to cause injurious compression, but that the compression is gradual and cannot injure the spring. For this reason it is unnecessary to provide a shoulder to limit the movement of the follower 12 upon imparting such draft. In shunting or coupling it will be noted that the follower 11 is forced inwardly against the action of the spring 19, the follower 12 acting as a rest for the spring during this movement, and that in imparting a draft thevloop 7 will draw the follower 12 against the action of said spring 19,*the follower 11 serving as a rest for said spring during such'movement.
IVe claim as our invention In a device of the kind specified, the combination with guide-castings secured to the inner faces of the draft-beams and provided at their outer ends with recessed portions or pockets projecting outwardly and fitting within gains in the draft-beams, and at their IOO and being limited in its inward movement thereby, whereby the compression of said cushion is limited in shunting and unlimited in drawing7 substantially as described.
