To all whom it may concern: Y Be it known that I', CLEMENT G. EARRING- TON, a citizen of ithe United States, residingl at Maplewood, St. Louis county, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Tandem-Spring Draft-Rigging',
of which the following 1s a full, clear, and
exact description, such asjwill enable others skilled in the art4 to which it appertains to I lo make and use the same, reference `being had to the accom anying drawings, forming part of this speci cation, in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view partly 1n section of a draft rigging constructed in accord-4 ance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a sideelevation of said draft rigging, the intermediate stop being shown insection; Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig.
l, the s `rin`gs not being shown; and Fi 4 is ,1i/0 a detai perspective' view'of one ofthe intermediate followers. y
This' invention relates to draft rigging for railway cars, and particularly to .tandemspring draft riggings. 2s The main object of my invention is to pro'- vide a draft rigging of the type referred ,toV
that lis of simple construction and which will effectively absorb buffng and ulling shocks. Referring to the drawings w ich illustratey the preferred form of my invention, 1 designates draft sills or continuous center sills of a car u'nderfrar'ne, and@ designates end stops on said sills which coperate with the end followers of the'` draft rigging. lAn intermediate stop is arranged between the stops 2, preferably con sists of a ribbed casting 3 t at extendstransversely between the draft sills and is rigidly connected thereto by bolts or rivets 4 that 40, pass through said parts and also by means of 1 and said intermediate sto rivets 4a that pass through the lower flanges of the draft sills and aterally projecting flanges 8 on the-casting, as'shown in Fig. 3. Intermediate followers 5 are arranged on op osite sides of this intermediate stop 3, and
en followers 6 coperate with the end sto s 2, the reference characters 7 designating t e tandem-arranged springs that are interposed between thev followers of each pair. I The yoke or stra 8 on the drawbar 9 sur-4 rounds the end fo owers and intermediate followers and is provided with elon ated slots 8a that receive vertically dispose projections on the intermediate fo lowers 5.
Each of said intermediate followers consists by the intermediate stop 3,
-carries a hollow boss 13 that centers the springs. The. vertically disposed projections on each of the intermediate followers 5 preferably consist of a flat pin 14 that extends through an opening 15 1n the vertically 65 disposed central web 1G of the follower, said pin being p'ilovided at its upper end with a ead 14a w 'ch rests upon the drawbar yoke, as shown in Fig. 3. The pin 14 is retained in position by means'of a cotter 16 that asses '70 through an opening in the lower end t ereof below the drawbar yoke.
Under bufiing strains the end follower 6 of the front set of springs, namely, the set that is larranged in front of the intermediate stop 3, will move rearwardly and thus compress said 'springs against the intermediate follower 5 of said set which is held stationary and the intermediate stop 5 of the 'rearsetof springs will 80 be moved rearwardly to compress said springs when the pin 14 on saidfollower is enga ed by the front end of the slots 8a` inthe rawbar yoke into which said pin projects, the end follower of the rear 'set of ,85' springs being. held stationary by the end stops 2 on the draft, sills withwhich said fol-v lower coperates. Under pulling-strains the intermedlatev follower 5 of the rear lset of springs will b'e'held'stationaryby the inter- 90 mediate. sto 3, and the intermediate follower 5 of-t e front set of springs will be moved forwardlywhenfthe' pm 14 von said follower is engaged by the rear ends of the* 4slots 8a in the yoke into which said pin pro- -95- Ajects. i
A construction of this character forms a very efficient draft rigging and can also be manufactured at a low cost.
Having thus described my invention, what v I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: p
1., A tandem spring draft ligging comprisf ing-an intermediate stop, followers arranged on opposite sides of said stop, a drawbar yoke surrounding said followers and provided with elongated s ots, and vertically disposed projections carried by the intermediate followers and movable therewith and projecting -into said elongated slots Vso as to' transmit the 110" .intermediate stationary h followers arranged on opposite sides of said intermediate stationary stop,
movements of the drawbar to said followers; substantially as described.
2. A tandem spring draft rigging compris ing an intermediate stop secured to the draft sills of the underframe, followers arranged on opposite sides of said stop, a drawbar yoke, and removable pins passing through said followers and projecting into slots in said yoke so as to transmit the niovementsrof the yoke to said followers, said pins being so constructed that they move with the followers; substantially as described.
3. In a tandem spring draft rigging, an stop, intermediate stop, a drawbarvyoke provided with elongated slots, and vertically disposed removable pins carried by the intermediate followers and projecting into said slots and rovided at their u per ends with heads wfiich rest on the draw ar yoke, said pins operating to transmit the movements ofthe drawbar to said followers; substantially as described.
4. In a tandem spring draft rigging, an intermediate followers arranged on opposite sideseof said stop, a drawbar yoke provided with elongated slots, pins carried by the intermediate followersand movable therewith, said pins projecting into the slots of the yoke, heads on the upper ends of said pins which rest on the yoke7 and means for from beine substantially as described'.
5. In a tandem spring draft rigging, flanged draft sills, an intermediate stop extending transversel between said sills and provided with laterally projecting flanges that contact with the flanges on the draft sills, and fastenof a cylindrical-shaped casting .one end with a solid wall which has a spr1ng preventing said pins displaced from said followers;
classi ing devices passing through the body portion of said stop and through said draft sills and also through the flanges on said stop and sills; substantially as described.
6. A follower for a draft rigging consisting of a cylindrical-sha ed casting provided with a thick central we extending transversely thereof, and a plurality of webs projecting radially from said central web substantially as described.
7. A follower for-a draft rigging consisting of a cylindrical-shaped casting provided at one end with a solid wall, a thick central web extending transversely of said casting, and a plurality of webs projecting radially from said central web; substantially as described.
8. A follower for a draft rigging consisting provided at centering boss formed integral therewith, a thick .central web extending transversely of said casting and having an opening extending longitudinally therethrough, webs projecting radially from said central web and integrally connected to the outerjwall of the casting, and a pin arranged in the opening in said central web and conforming to the cross sectional shape thereof so thatit will move with the follower, said pin projecting beyond thc edges of the follower; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto ailx my signature in the presence of two witnesses, this twenty ninth day of January, 1908.
CLEMENT G. HAR RINGTON.
