Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft-Gear Yokes, of r which the following is a specification, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
The object of the invention is to provide a cast steel yoke of great strength while of light. weight.
The invention is especially adapted to yokes used in connection with so-ealled tandem spring gears, and it appertains to the forward end of the yoke and to the means for transmitting bufiing stresses from the coupler to the follower plates..
The invention consists of a yoke of the Master Car Builders type, having bearing abutments for the inner end of the coupler and the forward follower, .such abutments being formed as integral parts of the longitudinal members of the yoke and being in 1 box form, and being preferably united by integral pillars at the sides of the yoke.
In the accompanying drawings illustratingthe invention, Figure l is a side elevation of the yoke; Fig. is a detail perspeo tire of .the forward end of the yoke, some parts being broken away; 3 is sectional detail on the line 3 of Fig. 2;. and 4 is a sectional detail on the line 4ll of Fig. l.
The yoke comprises the usual longitudinal members 10, ll, unit-ed at their rearward ends, as shown at 1.2, and being provided at their forward ends with inturned lips 13, ll, for engaging forwardly directed shoul tiers on the shank of the coupler and having rivet. soles 16, to accommodate the rivets for securing tne coupler to the yoke. The yoke is also rovidcd with a brldge 17 substantiaily midway of its length, for engaging the two intermediate followers of a tandem gear. 'lhis bridge may be of any preferred form of construction.
Near the forward end of the yoke, and so positioned as to form bearings for the. inner end of the coupler shank, there is located a pair of abutments 18, 1%, which are cast integral with the longitudiiial members 10, 11, and on the inner faces thereof. These abutments are in box form, comprising the transverse members to which the numerals Specification of Letters Patent.

These abutments are united by a pair of pillars 24, 25, located one at each end of the abutments and being preferably of less width than the ahutments, the latter being of-sutiicient width to provide ample strength for transmitting boiling stresses from the coupler to the forward follower against which their rearward faces are adapted to hear.

Preferably the walls of the abutments are coved or recessed midway between their side edges, as

In the use of tandem gears the. boiling strl ses tend to spread the longitudinal menibers of the yoke. and this tendency is overcome by the pillars 24, 9?. in the manufacture of draft gears there is usually some variation in measuren'ients, and it. is frequently found that the thickness of the butt of the coupler is somewhat less than the distance between the forward ends of the longi tudinal members of the yoke, and it becomes necessary to draw these members down firmly upon the coupler. In order that. this may be accomplished and a continuous hearing contact secured between the yoke incur hers and the coupler, the pillars Ia-l, 25, may be bent inwardly by the blow of a hammer without lessening their tensile strength. This tlexure of the pillars is rendered possible by ma king them of con'iparatively little width, as shown. The abutments 18, 19 relieve the securing rivets from strain incident t0 butting stresses.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a yoke, in combination, a pair of longitudinal members. abntments in box form formed on the inner faces of the longitudinal members an:l positioned to receive the hearing of a: butt of a coupler, and pillars uniting the aluiments at their ends.
