Description

No. 118,790, Patented Sep. 12,1871.
\n ESR \mvimem UNITED STATES PATENT OF IC MARVIN GADWELL, 0F LANSING, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN ELASTIC WASHING-MITTS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARVIN CADWELL, of Iran sing, in the county of In ghain and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Elastic \Vashing-Mitts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specification, in which liigure 1 is a plan view of my invention. 2 is a section on the line a: .1; in Fig. 1. shows the device attached to a hand.
Like letters refer to like parts in each figure.
'l he nature of this invention relates to an improved mitt to protect the hand while engaged in washing clothes, and to assist in rubbing, the same. The invention consists in the peculiar construction and operation of a mitt for the purpose, made of suitable India rubber.
1n the accompanying drawingmy mittis shown, wherein A re 'iresents the covering for the palm of the hand, provided with rings B, which en Fig. Fig. 3
gage with the fingers of the hand, as shown, and
with straps C anda buckle, D, by means of which the device is attached to the hand of the opera tor. Each side of the pahnA is providedwith corrugations a those upon one side of the palm may be smaller and finer than those upon the other, so that either side may be used as may be required to suit the difi'erent qualities of coarse or tine fabrics. A rectangular piece is cut out of the palm a little smaller than the portion which forms the corrugated part of the palm, being made of harder rubber, and the latter is then stuck upon the former to cover the hole thus cut out. The whole is then put into proper molds, and the corrugations a and rings B are formed by the press into which the molds are placed for the purpose.
By this method of construction an elastic mitt is made wherein the palm with its corrugations is harder and less elastic than the other portions,
thereby allowing the latter-named parts to better conform to the shape of the hand.
I am aware of the washing-shield as secured to Charles E. F. Lewis, February 5, 1867, and claim no partin said invention, as it is altogether impracticable.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--' A washing-mitt, provided with corrugations 00 upon each side of the palm A, and with straps O and rings B, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantiallyas and for the purposes set forth.
MARVIN CADWELL.
